I apologise for the tech OCD, I’m just so stoked to have this console back in my life and every little noise or sound makes me wonder, “What if”? My Xbox has a Philips DVD drive and when I power the system on with no disc inserted or close the tray with no disc inserted while powered on, I can hear the lens move up and down the track 3 times before settling. Is this normal behaviour for this brand of disc drive? I’ve included a video below, you can clearly hear it after the tray closes. Thanks!

Hello Team. I have run into something unique I have never seen before. I just hard modded a friends OG Xbox (v1.0) and everything went swimmingly. Although his original DVD drive (Thomson Okmco Shenzhen) would not read discs before the hard mod (pretty common issue of course), it would open and close and the Xbox booted just fine. I used a working Samsung DVD drive to work the modding magic and I had no issues with any part of it. The TSOP is an ST. After the hard mod and BIOS flash, I put his original DVD drive back in the unit. Now, however, the unit will not boot with the original DVD drive installed. It throws error 13. If I replace that drive with a different DVD drive (also a Samsung), it boots just fine and everything works. If I put the Thomson DVD in another v1.0 with a Hynix TSOP, it boots just fine. Has anyone seen an issue where the DVD model causes the unit to not be able to load the dashboard (at least that is what error 13 is I believe) after a modification? I am guessing the TSOP chip has something to do with it. This is more of a "huh" moment as obviously the unit is fine with the other DVD drive connected and I can just use that. Just curious if anyone else has seen this issue. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Hi has anyone had much success fixing the dvd drives, I cant believe how crappy they were. Seems like everybody has a bad drive. I have a samsung and replaced belt, cleaned and installed a new laser and still no good. Is a modified LG the best option? How good is FatXplorer I got my 1TB running from it. So much better than the ftp that is hit n miss

Hi can you bypass the DVD, I keep getting error 12. I have a DVD which is causing system to not boot. I swapped a DVD with my only working one and I was able to softmod. Can i use the faulty drive for the check.

I decided to power it up to see if it's still running only to find I get this weird lens issue with an error code 11 on screen. I've also tried the disc drive on my main console, the same thing happens. Would anyone know why? I've got another GDR-8163B that's already been modified for use on the Xbox. I'll use it and modchip the system.

Are these universal to every receiver? I've 3 ir receivers but not remotes and thing if buying sole remotes. Thanks.

As the title states, the Philips drive in my 1.2 is refusing to boot/read discs. In XBMC4Gamers it appears in the top right corner as you would expect, but the text that accompanies it just says "Busy". It says this as well in the file manager. In the retail dashboard it will throw up the usual "Could not read this disc" error. It also has the telltale 'hitches' during the flubber animation that appear whenever the DVD drive is disconnected. Is this indicative of a hardware issue with the drive? I'm confident its not my mainboard nor my cable. I'm really, really not up for cannibalising another Xbox to fix this one and listings for individual drives are non-existant.

Got a 1.6 crystal in pretty great condition here with one serious problem - DVD drive (SDG-605) is dead, error 12. Tried swapping a known working DVD drive in and using exactly the same power+IDE cable+HDD it successfully boots to dash so it's definitely the SDG-605 causing the error. If anyone has any working DVD drives they are willing to part with, especially if they're in the UK, that would be great. Otherwise, it's going to be the eBay lottery, and I'm not feeling lucky.

so here's the thing I can't launch my games from the DvD drive it spins and initializes but won't launch games.

I'm trying to find extended cables for the insides of a 1.6: - DVD Drive Power cables - Gameport cable extention - PSU power into the mobo Ideally I wanna try find some premade cables/adapters.. but If it has to be a DIY jobby then tips would be much appreciated!

Ok so I have two v1.6 consoles, both had LPC rebuild and an Xblast modchip installed with LFRAME cut. Both boot fine from my chosen bios in Xblast The issue I have is I cannot get either of them to boot a dvd, either an original game or Hexen,OGXboot2021,Slayers. I know the disks are all fine as they boot in other consoles. I know the dvd drives are fine as I have rebuilt them all and they work fine in other consoles too, tried changing IDE cables and sata adapters this has no effect, so that leads me to think its the actual modchip that is stopping disk being read, no-dvd and standard bios's give the same results too. My next step is to reconnect LFRAME and boot from onboard and see if disk's will boot. Anyone come across this before or have any ideas? Thanks

I got a job lot recently of some consoles - and all of them have buggered Thomson drives I've tried adjusting pots, tried booting multiple burnt copies of HeXen and OGXBOXInstaller etc. but all seem to just hang on the Linux screen. Any suggestions for what can be done? Can a HDD be setup outside the console? I have FATXplorer - and I know Eaton was looking at adding more support for the OG Xboxes however I think these are all still in beta. Cheers guys

i know the drive from a 360 will not work with an og xbox but are there any parts from a 360 drive that would work? for example, would certain lasers like the SOH-DX1 from a 360 drive work in an og xbox drive that has the same model laser?

Ok people so i upgraded my hard drive today. all going well. all sorted. Put the xbox back together and guess what. Stupid dvd drive keep ejecting. I close via the button and opens again. ITS A samsung sdg-605 Please guys help me

What the title says. I've flashed my smart xx with X2 5032 and tried manipulating both the text file in the e-petition as well as as using X2 config maker to confirm that the DVD check is removed. Unfortunately it just refuses to boot I know that the config is working because the wireframe flubber shows up but it will just sit endlessly loading after that. It boots correctly with a drive plugged in. Any help?

Hello Friends I got my 1.6 Crystal modded with XE2.6 chip down from the loft. It still worked loading the games off the HD! However, it wouldn't eject, so I took it apart and replaced the rubber belt and that fixed it. Next the drive wouldn't read clean original discs, so I cleaned all the dust away, cleaned the runner rods and replaced the grease with a metal / plastic lubricant, but no luck. So I tested the POT resistance which was 1.35k ohms. I carefully adjusted it slowly by 0.1k ohms steps. When I got to about 0.9k ohms the XBOX would just turn on for a second and turn off, then on and off and now flashing red lights on the eject button. I opened up the DVD case and as expected, the laser isn't working. So I presume the laser has died and because of this the XBOX won't boot? I plan to swap my working DVD drive to prove its the DVD thats died and thats why it won't boot. But I thought modded BIOS's removed the dependancy of must having a DVD drive? If I remember I flashed the X5035 BIOS many years ago. Does this mean this BIOS does have the DVD drive dependancy and I need to upgrde the BIOS to a later version? Once I test this XBOX with my working DVD drive, should I use @sweetdarkdestiny's OGXBox Installer 2021 to upgrade the BIOS? If so, what one should I use? samsung may be some of the best at reading disks but they are the worst at getting stuck trays. if changing the belt doesn't make the disk tray function correctly then what should i try next?

Noticed that my DVD drive is having a had hard time reading discs. I did clean the laser with 91% alcohol. Is there any way to calibrate the lasers power?

Strange I am unable to read burnt discs with Phillips DVD drv on the 1.4 but originals boot fine. No issues with Issues with Phillips DVD drv on 1.1. Do I have to apply a patch to DVD drv? If no I will try another DVD-R burner on slowest speed. Thanks in advance.

Howdy all! So first tech Q. As some of you may know I recently have got a XBOX sent to me from a friend so I have been purchasing the extras controllers, cables etc. Anyways I brought a bundle of controllers that came with a xbox FOC! Now it was listed as working which it is but the DVD drive wont read disc's and it rattles! The seller packaged i very poorly so I suspect it was damaged in transit. I know I could replace the drive but I was wondering if there was a way I could use my other TSOP'd box to sort of build a HDD for it and put it in this one or some other way of transfering stuff to the HDD? It seems to have a stock dashboard on it and I obv cant use a hexen disc. Any thoughts appreciated as it seems a shame to side line it for the sakes of a dvd drive. Cheers.

some have them and some don't. i've noticed them mainly on thompson drives but have seen them on other drives to. what are those silver things that go on the front of the dvd drive and what do they do?
