About Me

  1. Dear All, I own an StarTech IDE to Sata adapter, and I have a 3.5 HDD on my OG XBOX, however owing to the Power Cable this adapter won't fit on the HDD Case, how did you fix this issue? Thanks
  2. I paid a lot of money for a sata drive, an adapter and a 80 pin wire and it didn't work. I was thinking about buying an IDE drive since they are much cheaper in my area. Can I install it on my modchipped xbox without the use of a 3rd party ribbon cable or adapter?
  3. I keep reading that it's mandatory to switch to an 80-wire cable with these adapters, because otherwise the Xbox IDE controller would negotiate a higher UDMA mode with the adapter and this would fail at boot. But at the same time, the usual word seems to be that the stock Xbox BIOS is limited to UDMA2 and you need things like Cerbios to be able to use higher UDMA modes. Given that they shipped the console with a 40-wire cable, it would make sense to cap at UDMA2. UDMA2 can of course run on 40-wire cables, so those two statements would appear mutually exclusive, which nobody really seems to notice. The only way I could make sense of that is if the adapters were only ever tested with 80-wire cables or if they would fail to negotiate down to UDMA-2, if being on a 40-wire cable. I've looked up the Marvell 88SA8052 spec sheet and while it's not exactly detailed, it's saying that besides UDMA "up to 150 MB/s", it's supporting PIO as well, and that certainly does not need a 80-wire cable. That would suggest that in theory, the chip should be able to negotiate UDMA-2 and work with the stock cable just fine. Did anyone ever get the Startech adapter to work with the 40-wire cable?
  4. Wanting to avoid paying single piece prices so I'm looking for a good vendor that offers quantity discounts on quality IDE cables and the replacement, full-length controller replacement cables. Any recommendations or success stories? Thanks.
  5. Hi all, Thought I would offer these out as they are sitting round doing nothing, bought the adapters and cables in bulk a while back and upgraded the adapters (100ohm resistor installed to R4 giving good boot times), used most but still have 5 kits available, comes with: 1 x brand new ATA 133 IDE Round Cable 1 x M03C IDE/Sata Adapter with 100 Ohm resistor pre-soldered at r4 The cables come with the rubber protectors near each IDE connector, I personally cut these off for ease of installation. £15 per kit plus postage (£17.50 posted)
  6. I don't like that the Startech SATA-IDE adapter doesn't have a case, so I designed one for it, and thought I'd share it. It's printed in two halves and snaps together (if all goes well). sata-adapter-case.stl
  7. Can someone recommend where I can buy a replacement IDE ribbon that... - is the right length - has connectors at appropriate spots for both optical drive and HDD I am located in British Columbia, Canada on the far west coast. And lastly, if I'm using a stock HDD will it work with a 80pin ribbon instead of a stock 40pin? Lastly, will I get faster speeds with the 80pin? Thanks
  8. https://www.amazon.com/Card-Adapter,SD-Memory-Adapter-Converter/dp/B08SK4G7RP So why not? With a CD drive delete and no ide cable this would create lots of room for mods . And being able to take out the SD and load stuff seems faster. And is cheaper than most of the HDD options .
  9. Currently it's the cheapest on eBay, for my location (found some Startech ones, which are generally most suggested online, but they cost 50€ wth). Asking this because last time I tried another adapter (this one), Slayer Evox installer didn't recognize it (showed 0 for all partitions on the main screen, then faked to formating and copying files -very quickly).
  10. Looking to replace my ide drive with a sata drive, I have the startech adaptor and a molex splitter, only question is my 80wire ide cable won't be here till may 7th, ordered a https://a.co/d/2qL1JSJ cable they seem to be on back order, can I use my 40wire ide until that one gets here, wanna go ahead and swap the drive and get my stuff transfered
  11. After hitting so many walls in my recent projects, it’s nice to have at least one idea come to fruition. This has probably been done before, but I’ve never seen it so I thought I’d share my success story. I have achieved complete IDE elimination with this awesome Startech adapter. Downside is the size of the adapter, but I have a few ideas to make it work. The speeds are really good thus far, but I haven’t done much testing outside of menus. Look past the mess of cables lol. https://imgur.com/a/Ima00KO
  12. Hi Again, just wanted to share a link to a custom IDE cable. this is an ultra-ide cable made to the length and connector spacing of the original cable. no more awkward twisting/folding, and the blue connector actually goes in the motherboard this time. There are bulk packs available also. As always, international buyers, beware that shopify can generate some crazy freight prices. Sometimes it IS just that expensive to ship from the US, but often there are 3rd party shipping alternatives and i'm happy to help you sort those out directly. I'm in the process of trying to integrate a 3rd party shipping service to the site to help make it easier all around. https://gameroomcustoms.com/products/custom-80-conductor-ide-cable
  13. I had to do some maintenance on my disk drive, but now my SSD is asking to format and the key is all bugged, is this a problem with my SSD (maybe fake), or does this happen every time you remove the cables IDE? (I'm using SSD on Xbox for the first time)
  14. hey everyone does anyone know where to find a 80pin ide cable that is the same as the original in terms of shape etc?
  15. i bought a cheap adapter on ebay. it doesnt have a master/slave adjustment. is that needed?
  16. I'd like to make some 80 wire IDE cables for the Xbox, 80 conductor 30 AWG ribbon cable is no issue but when it comes to IDC/IDE/PATA connectors there are a lot of different names and specs, I'm quite sure which ones I have to account for. I've been told that normal keyed 40-pin IDC connectors will not do the job, so what type of connector is needed? Also, if you've made these cables before, where did you source the connectors from?
  17. I’m attempting to fix a friends unmodded 1.0 Xbox with a dead HDD (error 7). I’ve successfully extracted the EEPROM using PiPROM and prepared a new IDE HDD with FATXplorer. However I’m having trouble locking the replacement Seagate ST3320620A IDE HDD which according the Xbox Hard Drive Compatibility Chart supports locking. Initially I used an IDE to USB adapter but XboxHDM23USB Beta 3 and 4 complained about an unknown USB chipset. I then tried a StarTech PATA2SATA3 IDE to SATA adapter which progressed a little further but still fails with “ATA SECURITY SETPASS failed: scsi error aborted command”. The output from XboxHDM23USB Beta 4 shows that the HDD is in the frozen state which I believe prevents unlocking/locking. If this is causing the failure, how can I unfreeze the HDD? Can I use some other utility such as hdparm to lock the HDD?
  18. Hello all DONT BUY CHEAP ADAPTERS i installed a SATA to IDE adapter ages ago and now having problems with ERROR 13 when using the HD swap trick with the OG 8gig the new SATA would work again, but this was a false hope as I have now realised the actual adapter is the fault of error 13 i purchased this adapter https://www.amazon.co.uk/Multibao-Interface-Adapter-Converter-Parallel/dp/B08VR9YQ3C/ref=asc_df_B08VR9YQ3C/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=499393282480&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13086529900178308512&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045594&hvtargid=pla-1251257650787&psc=1 and have found there to be acid on the board and the capacitor is loose DON’T BUY THIS ADAPTERS
  19. I wasn't sure where to put this thread, but it is still Xbox related. I have a box full of IDE hdds that I'd like to sort through without having an Xbox run for hours to power them. I've been trying to find a guide or video tutorial on converting a 12V wall adapter or a usb device(if possible) to power the IDE drive. I e found one video that is pretty close to what I want and it suggests using a regulator and switch. I'm hoping for a simpler solution as I have a ton of old wall adapters lying around.
  20. Hello Everyone. I am kind of new/kind of old to the scene, as I have an rev 1.6 Xbox that I bought brand new in 2006, softmodded and installed a 160gb harddrive, which is(was?) limited to 137Gb useable space, copied all my bought games to it, threw in a couple emulators, and then just used it on and off and basically forgot anything involved in the process to the mists of time. Recently it wouldn't power on, so I replaced the common 5 3300uF caps that were leaking, and it was good to go. My brain noted that the 16 year old IDE hard drive will not run forever, and I should look at upgrading to a SATA configuration. Due to the time gap, very old versions of software, I have now read so much conflicting information at this point am not sure what to do in 2021. I no longer have the original drive. I don't appear to have an image of either drive (8gb or 160gb) in any of my backups either. My fuzzy memory says this is bad because of linked keys. I do not have a PATA usb adaptor, or computer with PATA. I have an Xbox to USB adaptor, but I don't think I have a compatible thumb drive. Based on my research I've ordered the "correct" Startech SATA/PATA adaptor. The existing drive already has an 80 pin cable. I do have ftp access without issue. I'm attaching a 2 screenshots of my drive/system info, my questions are: Is that key in the screenshot all I need? If not what is the best way to go about backing up the drive/board key "Just in case" things go bad. And is Chimp (https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/wiki/chimp/) still the best way to clone it to a new drive in 2021? I undoubtedly will have more questions, but backing up is my first priority, and once I have a confirmed backup I will be much more comfortable playing with it, and hopefully updating the various software I have loaded. Any "critical hints" or gotchas would be appreciated as well. v
  21. Results Below! I compare load times while controlling all variables of the startech ide2sat2 adapter vs the cheap adapter that most people recommend. There are significant differences in both price and performance. cheapo ux bootup 2:28 - 3:09 = 41 seconds halo 2 load 4:11 - 4:56 = 45 seconds coinops dd3 5:42 - 6:25 = 43 seconds startech ux bootup 8:00 - 8:20 = 20 seconds halo2 load 10:05 - 10:25 = 20 seconds coinops dd3 10:57 - 10:40 = 43 seconds CoinOps was 43 seconds for both tests. This implies that the wait isn't due to throughput of the storage device but rather the zip extraction of the cpu.

    IDE CABLE BROKEN

Can I use other IDE cables? is it bi-directional?
  23. Bought 3 yellows ones on eBay - all garbage - can someone tell me where to buy ones that actually work? Sitting in front if a modded 500gb SATA original Xbox that I can’t play on a bank holiday weekend is disappointing - any help greatly appreciated.
  24. With the eventual goal of creating a very slimmed down xbox I took one of the cheap SD to IDE adapters and modified it into this. Desoldered the existing male header; soldered a female header onto the back for a direct motherboard connection. Soldered the power connection to the DVD header to keep wires from running across the board. Unfortunately this meant the openxenium install was to tall; so that got a direct solder to the motherboard.
  25. Just curious is there a specific ide cable people use as a replacement? I have a 500gb data drive installed now. And saw people advise to upgrade to a 80 wire cable. Problem is the connectors just don't seem right on a of cable I tried. Distance between them is not right and won't work
