some have them and some don't. i've noticed them mainly on thompson drives but have seen them on other drives to. what are those silver things that go on the front of the dvd drive and what do they do?

Quick question I am finding difficult to search online. Like most, I mainly play games directly from the hard drive, but do occasionally like to play my games on disc. I am wondering if there is an application out there that gives you the option of disabling the dvd drive on startup? I want to keep my dvd drive alive for as long as possible, and I cringe everytime I boot the Xbox and the laser searches for a disc that isn't there. It seems I am just degrading the lifetime of the drive that way. If I can disable the drive when I am not using it, I bet I would be able to squeeze more life out of it. Thanks!

the 2 screws that go in the back of the thompson drives, does anyone know what they are so i can order them? my local hardware store couldn't match them.

Any opinions on which DVD drive variant is the best? I know they are all getting old and lacking in reliability now. I’ve got a Thomson in my OG 1.0 and a Philips in my OG1.1 and a Philips in a 1.6. I know my Thompson drive is very finicky about reading burned cds and some burned dvds (especially if only a small amount of data is written to it). It still reads official discs well enough when I’m not playing off of the HDD. The Phillips in my 1.1 seems to be much more forgiving when it comes to burned dvd media, and cd media. I can’t comment on the Philips in 1.6 As it is a recent addition, the seller said that it refused to open. When the system arrived I powered it up and was greeted to a copy of Manhunt (that probably needs to be resurfaced). What about blank media, any opinions out there? I typically use RiData for DVD media and Imation for CD media.

Hey all! 1.6 crystal Xbox here with an aladdin chip. My Xbox fragged with error 7 so I assumed my HDD (softmod) was dead. So I got an aladdin, redid the LPC of course and got it to boot with the purple logo! Same thing though. Narrowed it down to the DVD drive. Whenever the disk drive is connect to both IDE and power, the XBOX with either FRAG with error 7 or if I just connect power it will just boot loop the blue xbox logo over and over. Samsung drive. Assuming its just a dead drive? Anyone hear of this? Any way to repair or do I just grab a drive from another xbox? Thanks!

If i flash a bios with the skip dvd check will i still be able to boot from dvd on a blank harddrive?

Hi,have a one of this Philips VAD-6011/21 DVD drive fitted on Xbox 1.4, no longer read anything even the original games, is it possible to calibrate the lens?

i pulled apart my 1.6, cleaned and repasted the the heat sinks, and cleaned and greased the dvd drive. i was cycling the dvd drive trying to get the tray to operate correctly when all of a sudden the system started having weird artifacting on the screen. i turned it off and un plugged it and then plugged it back in and it started frag'ing. what's going on?

Out of nowhere today my 1.6b, X3, 2tb Xbox won't boot. Symptoms are: no frag, the console appears to be booting dvd drive will not eject when the button is pressed. The eject button blinks quickly and you can hear the drive spinning down but it never ejects long press of eject and power gives the pink executor logo on the panel and displays the outline of the Flashbios screen but remains blank Single press of the power button lights the Xecuter logo up red for a few seconds then blue as normal, no boot So, I originally thought the chip might have somehow died, but it absolutely cannot be. I completely disassembled the box, removed the X3 from the pinheaded, put the original IDE cable and hard drive back in, and bypassed the X3 board that interfaces with the power/eject buttons. The console appears to be booting but no audio or video (tv behaves as if it is getting no input signal). I have tried with both the OEM composite cable and the OEM component cable (breakout box) with no change. So now I'm convinced the chip is fine and something died in the console but can't find anything similar when searching. Everything on the motherboard looks fine and this console has worked fine since being modded in 2005. Any ideas?

Hello, is there a possibility to exchange the DVD drive of the xbox for a PC drive?

i was trying trying to replace the dvd drive in my 1.6 rocky 5 softmod, uix dash ..when i change dvd drives i get an error 13 when i swap them , if i put the old broken dvd the softmod boots fine..i dunno what to do hear i went as far as removing the softmod but that didnt work either .. thoughts ?

I literally lost 4 xbox dvd drives this week(cant seem to fix any of them following guides i have been reading ) , and have been reading that a lg 8164b can be used as a replacement. i really dont care if can play OG games i just need it to finish my softmod . So my question is , will i need to make any modification to use this drive or will it work just plug-in it in the IDE and using a power splitter ? anyone ?

I have placed a laptop sata DVD drive in one of my xboxes... The point is that it does work, as I can install a hdd with Aid, but game back-ups or originals do not start... Why is this and what can be done about it? It is a Sony optiarc Inc. AD-7560S. Help would be appreciated.

Hi Team, So i picked up a XBOX, but sadly the DVD drive is destroyed and so is the HDD. The mother board its self works fine. Is there anyway to get this up and running?

Hi guys, i just bought a softmoded xbox with a 250gb HDD in it, works well but it's a PAL Xbox, wich mean that i don't have HD options, and it's just unwatchable on my 4k Sony TV, who by the way doesn't have component ports, only RCA and HDMI, i'm stuck with the unfindable and expensive HD LINK by Pound, but lucky me, i found a similar cable converter on Amazon for 25€, even with bad reviews i have no choices but to order it and test it. So i solder the points for the TSOP, and also removed the clock capacitor, burned a Hexen DVD (the 2018 one) , launched it, choose the suitable flashing option for my Winbound 1.4 motherboard, and tried to flash the bios, BUT : i have a non official controller! And as i'm sure you know, gentoox is not capable of recognizing no names controller, but only the official one, and of course : i don't have one (but order one on Rakuten), i tried multiple time with every bios that was on the DVD (only the windbounds one of course), but gentoox just don't like cheap controllers no matter how fast i press on the D-Pad Now that you have the context, here's my question : Is there any way to flash the custom bios without the gentoox tool ? I know that we can do it with Unleashx (or Evox i don't remember), but i can't find the bios anywhere (just don't know where to look too besides googling it), and even if i find one, i'm not sure where to put it exactly or if it's safe to do anything without Hexen or Xblast. Hey Guys; My DVD drive in my 1.5 xbox opens and closes no problem, but when i put a disc in to try and load i hear a loud grinding noise and the disc does not load. Does anyone know what i will need to do to repair this?

I have a TSOP modded Xbox (PAL) on which I want to view Region 1 DVDs. The console itself is region free and everything seems to be going fine until about 5-10 mins into the DVD, when the picture suddenly freezes and the console crashes for seemingly no reason at all. I have the video settings on NTSC M (when playing the DVD in PAL mode the picture stutter). Anyone familiar with this problem?

At first I started modding my OG Xbox for fun and preservation. But I really like playing with it. After a Rocky5 softmod (mrmario2011 tutorial), I decided to go TSOP. After tweaking my potention meter, to finally get 1 of the 4 hexen discs to read, and after fixing the dashboard with it. I now have a TSOPPED, 1.0 with 256kb evox m8+ f and g bios and a unleash x dash. In the changelog of the HEXEN2018 disc, it says that every bios is modified to work without disc drive.. But if I disconnect my disk drive, my xbox won't boot into his dash.. So I would like to try to modify my evox m8+ bios myself with evotool to get rid of the dvd check. (to make sure I preserve my og xbox when the drive fails in the future). The only problem is, I can't seem to find the bios files on the internet, and I don't know how to get them off the Hexen dvd.. Anybody got tips. And what is your opinion, should I use ind bios instead? And what's the best way to flash from the hard drive?

Hi, As the title says im looking fro a decent tut for the internal dvd dongle mod. Preferably one with pictures that still exist I have been on the wayback machine and found a couple from the xbox scene site but i was wondering if anyone knows of any better ones out there?
