If you have a version 1 to 1.5 you can reflash the bios you need to put 2 links on the main board and if need be you can use conductive paint from Jaycar. Thats my old car I have had a V2 Monaro since new but the SS Dave name has stuck. If your close to ACT I can help with soldering. Cheers

Hello Dan Depending on the version of Xbox I would either fit a mod chip if it's a 1.6 or reflash it TSOP if it's a version 1.0 to 1.5. Mod chips are cheap on evilBay. Then fit any drive boot with a install disk and do a fresh install that saves copying crap from the old drive thats taking up space and not needed. Also with a mod chip you don't have to worry about NULLING the eeprom and haveing to lock the drive for it to work. I see you say AUS is your loction where abouts ? If you get stuck just ask. Same as the main board just 1st make sure that the large caps are discharged then in the hot ultrasonic bath with PCB cleaner for 10 min then scrub with Isopropyl 100% with a stiff brush. I used a hot air rework station to dry it. SS Dave

I had some time inbetwen jobs and thought I would have a go at one of my cheap pickup's. I got 3 for $20 from the local recycle center with the real reason for buying them was 2 of them had Duo X2 mod chips. But anyway can you have too many XBOX"S ? I think not. As you can see it's in poor condition. So after opening it up. And removal of the PCB and Faraday cage. Looks like it's been swimming or at least stored out side. Even the DVD drive got stripped the lazer pickup was covered in a brown film that took several goes to clean off add a new load belt with some lube on the moving part's it's now as good as new. I am suprised the fan could spin. I washed the mother board and power supply in a ultrasonic bath then a scrub with isoprenol alcohol and a brush then I hot air dryed them. And the cases when't in the dish washer on a heavy duty cycle wash. The faraday cage got washed sanded and then a coat of black paint Now a reasemble with new heat sink compound It's up and running now lets fit one of N64's HDMI kits. For the time been the DuoX2 chip is staying but I will flash the TSOP in the near future as well as thinking a RAM upgrade is in order. It's back together for now with a 500gig hard disk. And yes it is the same XBOX all up about 2 1/2 hours work not including the dish washer taking 1.5 hours. Hello dieabeato If the new drives are IDE (40 pin) easy to do the only thing slowing the prosess down may be the BIOS is not set for large drives. If the Hard disk's are SATA you will nead a IDE to SATA adaptor and a 80 way cable to make it work. I use SlaYers install DVD disk's but the Hexen Disk should work as well Both disks have a bios flash section so if need be you can upgrade the bios Cheers SS dave

Looking at down on the chip as it sits now. o D0 point o o m o o 3.3 Volt o o o d o - c o - h o o i p o BT Remove the wire from BT and add a link from BT to 3.3 volt If the Bt is low when powering up the xbox it disables the mod chip Are you sure it's not on a sccket as from new I sure they came with a pin header and socket. If that fails fit the new chip and start again.

Bit odd to have both banks to stop I used to use a DUO X2 when playing with differant BIOS and if I flashed a dud BIOS I would flick the switch reboot and flip it back and try a differant BIOS. I always had a fallback bios that way. I also don't wire it to the power/eject button I link the BT point to the 3.3 volt pin that way it's allways enabled the only reason for wiring to one of the button's was to allow for XBOX LIVE. Hi Onkight Never tried to lock a SSD but why would you want to. I can't see the point in locking a drive anyway. I did try a SSD once but the boot and game load times where not any better than a 7200rpm drive with a small amount of cache as you are still limited by the ATA66 cable speed. SS dave

It would not do any damage to the xbox trying the switch the other postion. If it boots with a purple shield in the top left thats a version 1.6 bios.

How did you go reading the link I put up? You don't need to spend big dollars on a soldering iron just get what you can afford and you will only need small amounts of flux,solder and a small roll of wire. Good Luck SS Dave

It's called eBay look for an Xbox thats cheap and been sold for parts and swap the dvd drive. SS Dave

I would proberly say it's well and truly cooked. I suspect the the hard disk was conected to the 40way cable and fell on one of the heat sinks on the power supply. Have a look at the bottom of the 40 pin conector of the hard disk and you will proberly see black marks on the back of the plug. Also have a look at the power supply heat sinks especially the one with the yellow stickers for burn marks. If it was me looking at repairing that Xbox I would do a temporary repair by jumping the 4 resistors with new ones add wire links to replace the burnt track near the 40 pin conector and the power it up with an old 8gig drive and no DVD drive and see what happens. Also check for correct voltages at the main power plug. But because you say your not getting any video out I think your flogging a dead horse as the saying go's If you have the correct voltages at the power plug to the main board and still no responce I would suspect you now have a door stop with a dud main board with the possibilty a dead hard disk and a dead DVD drive if it was conected at the time. A word of warning the heat sinks with the yellow stickers can have 200 volts or more also in Australia it's 300+ volts

Yep you can practice on that if you want. Tools you should have and use. A fine tip soldering iron preferably temperature controlled. Thin solder 0.8mm or 0.7mm not lead free. Solder flux paste. Stuff that's in a syringe is good. Solder wick. It's used to remove excess solder. Small cutters and a sharp blade. Some thin wire. I and many others use wire wrap wire it's 0.25mm thick single strand. A magnifying glass and some good lighting. Isopropyl Alcohol or methylated spirits and old/new tooth brush for cleaning the PCB Follow instructions in the link I sent you before and when you think your ready to go live on your working Xbox go back to the old one and practice some more you just pick random points to solder wires to. If you look around the board there are pleanty of places to try linking like the TSOP enable points. Have a go at using the solder wick as well. Remember if your not sure if you have done the job right post a pic here before you power it up! Cheers SS Dave

After zooming in on the bios chip yes yoy do have a SHARP bios chip so you will need to solder a wire as in on of the pics I have posted so if your doing that you could solder the 2 TSOP enable points. Have a look here and then pratice on old PCB's car radios,computer cards,ETC ETC or take the board to a electronics repair tech and ask real nice to do the soldering for you. You can just break it off the board with some wobbling it around or you can unsolder it it's up to you. This is a board that the cap was leaking so to prevent it leaking any more I just snapped ot of the board untill i get around to using it than i will clean it up and remove the leg thats left from the cap.
