Certain games won't work at all on my Original v1.4 Xbox (Halo Green Edition)

I've been having this issue for a while, and I am not sure where to write about it. I mentioned it in a post a few years ago, but now have more information but it makes the whole thing even more baffling.

I am using an Original v1.4 Xbox (Halo Green Edition)

There are a handful of games that my Xbox just refuses to play, period.

Originally, the only games I knew didn't work properly were Stubbs the Zombie, Psy-Ops and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

They both would freeze at specific spots during the game, Stubbs during the "Don't do drugs" and Psy-Ops the final battle.

Stubbs example - https://youtu.be/hO2w5w1KKFs

With Stubbs, I tried it on my Xbox 360 and it worked perfectly without issue.

So, I thought it was just a bad eye, or DVD-Drive.

Drive picture - https://i.imgur.com/sMV3iMj.png

I recently modded my system so that I could play Back-ups and preserve my discs, and low and behold...... the same issue is still happening.. even when played off HD, and there are more games!

For example, with Stubbs.. I tried from disc, dvd2drive to play it off the HD, I went and got another disc from a local retro GameStore, and even found a back-up online to try out... and all freeze up exactly at that spot.

Now I am finding other games with the same issue. Hulk: Total Destruction friezes when you start the game. Gauntlet Seven Sorrows freezes up after a few minutes of starting the game proper, it seems to be related to certain music tracks, but don't quote me.

Once again, I've tried playing it on Disc, off HD, and even going out of my way to try a back-up I found on the net (both burned to DVD, and from HD) and it's the same results. Yet it works fine in my Xbox 360......

Seven Sorrows DVD - https://youtu.be/xj8nMN3cLFY

Seven Sorrows 360 - https://youtu.be/RdiYtq0Atyc (Runs with no issue)

I did remove a bad clock/time capacitor as recommended.

I am using the StarTech IDE2SATA with a 2TB Crucial SSD. Hardmodded my system with an open xenium chip.

Here are some internal shots

The High Voltage Capacitor on the PSU seems to reflect silver when I use the flash, so here's a better look at it.

So I want to know what is going on?

Other games work just fine, I played through Robocop (2003) on my Xbox just last week with no issue and a few other games.

Why do these handful of games crash, is it a bad chip? capacitor? Has anyone found an issue like this?

Thank you all in advance!

Just out of curiosity have you cleared the cache on this box? Sometimes that can cause odd crashes/freezes.

It would be interesting to see if the Stubbs game crashed on your system sans the hard mod but that may be more than you want to do to it.

Stubbs, Hulk, and Psi Ops weren't working prior to the hard mod. I was trying to explain that in the original post.

Hell, I was hoping the hard-mod, and running off the HD would fix them but didn't. (I've tried multiple discs of Stubbs, and even.. web sourced ISOs/contents)

Since I just installed a new HD, cache (e), x, y, and z folders are empty.. and have cleared them again just in case.

Hate it when that happens. I think you can find the date on the Mobo, yes?

Not sure. It has a Focus video chip though so that pretty much makes it a 1.4. Technically the 1.5s were supposed to have them but since no one has ever really seen one lol  I’d go with 1.4.

Sadly, I cannot... the sticker has long been since rubbed off/gone.

I think it was gone even before I bought it!

These questions have nothing directly related to finding a fix for these games freezing.  I'm just wanting to obtain a few more details about your Xbox version.

Which modified Xbox BIOS are you using?

Which replacement dashboard are you using?

If UnleashX, which version are you using?

Next, press (Y) to display a System Info window:

What is the kernel version number?

What is the serial number of the Xbox?

You are using an 80-wire 40-pin high-speed IDE cable with the SSD/IDE-to-SATA adapter combo?

#1. I apologize, because I am a new member I am only allowed so many posts per day.
#2. I was having these issues BEFORE I modded the X-box (around/just after Thanksgiving). I originally thought the issue was attributed to the disc drive, and was hoping the mod would fix it, by running games off the HDD.. which it did not.

Ah ok. Sorry I missed that in the original post. Hmm that is very odd. I’m fairly certain I’ve run all those off a HDD before but I’ll test it out again just to see. That’s just weird it’s only those games.

That’s good about the cache. At least it can be eliminated as a cause.

The mod is new, having only been installed since ThanksGiving

As for Stubbs
Before modding

I tried it on my Xbox prior to the mod, and it froze at the "Winners don't use drugs" Screen
I then tried it in my 360 and it worked perfectly.

After the modding the system
I tried Stubbs again, didn't work
I got a hold of an ISO and burned it to disc... didn't work
I used Disc2drive to install the original to my HD, didn't work, then the ISO didn't work.
Finally i said "Screw it" and found an "HDD READY" version of Stubbs, put that on my HD........ and it still did not work at all.

I tried the same with all the games I know aren't work and are easy to reproduce the freezing, such as Seven Sorrows, which I had shown in my video links.

Yea, I was thinking this Xbox needs to be tested if it is a 1.5 revision. This is strange and consistent. My halo xbox was made in a date very similar to what people have speculated the date range for 1.5s, even those we don't know the date for this one I cant imagine they would be that far apart.

I'm going to say 1.4, since we used the 1.4 guide to install the Xenium Mod Chip
I've included close-up images of my various chips and ram just to help

I'm using UnleashX as my Dashboard, and I am unsure of the version and BIOS.
I've not rebuilt my system since taking the above pictures today, and over the weekend.

By some slim chance it's the CPU or GPU, I bought new thermal paste so that I may look at the chips and replace the paste.

Hopefully that answers everything for now.

I've owned the system for a few years (At most 5?), and had these issues since I purchased it. I thought it was a disc drive error, and hoped  a mod chip would fix it, so that I could just run games off HDD.
System was modded recently, and the issues persisted so now I'm looking for a solutions. Hell, it may just be a defective system!

Is it possible that those discs are scratched or dirty? If they didn’t work before the mod either, this seems like a logical cause.

Are you trying to play ripped copies of your discs or downloaded rips? If they’re copies of your discs, then I would lean even more so to the discs being damaged.

As stated above, for both Stubbs and Seven Sorrows I've tried (They were the easiest to re-create the freezing)
Multiple discs
Downloading and burning the ISO
Installing the disc
and Downloading a "HDD READY" version from the net and trying that.

None of them work, all freezing at the same point.
That's what brought me here, because it's baffling.

That's definitely a hardware issue but what exactly on the hardware? I have no idea.

It could be that these games use a certain GPU/CPU function/call that's not working on your specific unit which causes them to freeze/crash. It could also be the RAM.

Guess swapping to a differnet mobo will be your only solution, also this makes your Console rare I guess. Like others said it could be a very specific manufacturing issue.

I got rid of Stubbs since it had been re-released for modern consoles, and on sale for the holidays.
I still have Seven Sorrows

Like all the other games, it works perfectly int he 360 with no issue.

Sadly, I think I fucked the mod-chip when I put the system back together (All I did was hook up the ribbon and power cables to test a few things)
The Default Dashboard never worked, but now UnleashX isn't either.. both give me this error
https://i.imgur.com/xNmkmnh.jpg

When I turn the system on, or try to load a dashboard, I hear the system dvd drive eye move 4-5 times, which I don't remember hearing before.. the drive is empty.

That's what i was afraid of, that it was a defective system, but such a minor defect it only affects a handful of titles.
I was trying one last test, but now nothing is working.. I think I hit the modchip.

Someone mentioned that there are games, like BloodWake, which won't play if your system time is in the 2010s and beyond.
So I was going to set the system to like 2005, and see what happens.... but now I am getting the system needs repair error.

The IDE Cable died.
I replaced all the cables with new ones I had ordered from Chimeric Systems ( https://www.chimericsystems.com/ ) years ago and forgot to install.. and now it's working again...
(The handful of games that didn't work.. still do not work)

Have you tried the problem games since changing out the ide? Just curious if that made any difference at all or if it still persists. I’m going to assume the latter but wanted to ask.

Edit: Nevermind. Just saw your DM. At least the system is up and running again though! :D

Yea, sadly they are still not working.
Not sure if my UnleashX is up to date or not.

I am starting to think it was either
A. Minor factory defect
B. Mild Corrosion due to age, the clock capacitor was bad, but there was very little brown gunk that needed cleanup.

What do you mean by this statement?

You see the Evox shield in the upper left hand corner of the start up animation when you power on the system.

If so, that's the indication that an Evolution-X BIOS is being used.

Two Software Components used to Modify an Original Xbox

Team Evolution-X created many versions of both of these software components:

1. Modified BIOS/kernel that removed/disabled the security features built into the stock BIOS/kernel.

Evolution-X created several different modified BIOS/kernel releases:

  • for v1.0 Xboxes only: 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6 (most likely many older v0.x and v1.x releases too)
  • for v1.1 Xboxes only: 3.6
  • for v1.0 or v1.1 Xboxes: D.6
  • v1.0-v1.6 (MULTI_VERSION): M7
  • v1.0-v1.6b (MULTI_VERSION): M8 and M8plus their final release.

2. Replacement Dashboard

Evolution-X created several releases of their replacement dashboard - Evolution-X Dash (a.k.a., Evoxdash / RemoteX).

The last release being v+3935.

BIOS / Kernel Version

Since the Kernel version is 5838 from the previously posted UnleashX System Info page, it is either the Evolution-X M8 or M8plus BIOS.  You cannot tell exactly which from the kernel version value alone.  Team Evolution-X didn't change the kernel version for every BIOS they released to better identify which one you have installed.  They left the kernel version the same as the original Xbox BIOS it is based upon.  Here 5838 is the stock v1.6 Xbox's BIOS/kernel version number.

@KaosEngineerThank you for the information. I was just trying to describe the screens I see so you knew everything on my X-box.

FINAL FRIGGAN VENT ABOUT MY X-BOX.. I swear

So, you all know the issues with my Halo X-box..

I coincidentally found an Xbox v1.6 out on the street.
Someone had thrown it out, so I brought it home... at first it wasn't working right, no sound, no color.

After cleaning, reseating of all cords, etc etc.. it's working like a dream.

As for my original X-box, people are still telling me it's a Drive issue...
So, I switched the drives on the consoles... the v1.6 drive won't work with the Halo edition, won't even open
While the Halo Edition drive, (a Phillips) not only works with the v1.6 console, BUT runs the games better/faster than ever with less noise and better load times.
I was able to test Seven Sorrows and the other games that weren't working (Except Stubbs,Since I no longer own it) and they all work now.

So.. I'm even more annoyed, and now just going to get rid of it for parts.

That’s weird about the Phillips in the 1.6. I mean it tracks with us thinking there’s something flawed on that halo mobo but I’d still love to know what that was. Lol. As to the dvd swap do you recall the drive type that was in the 1.6? There’s one that doesn’t play well with the startech adapters. I want to say it’s the Samsung DVDs.

Anyway, that’s cool you were able to get the other to work and the games. I’d be curious if the hdd ready version of Stubbs would now work on the 1.6 since it didn’t on the halo box. I still can’t believe that 1.6 was just thrown out on the road dude. Lol. Hold on to the halo box. You might come across a 1.0-1.14 mobo you could throw in there. :D If not though you can probably guarantee someone will buy that case from you at some point.
