Question About Adjusting a New Laser On a Phillips Drive

Recommended Posts

i found some new lasers for phillips drives and bought some. these were brand new because i had to desolder the esd protection solder points on it. i replaced the laser in a drive that would not work at all and now it is working. however, it won't read any disks that have any kind of serious damage. my old samsung and hitachi will play them fine but they have to be almost perfect for my phillips to read them. i have heard about how phillips turn the laser strength down in an attempt to prevent the from reading cd-r disks(fyi, i'm only trying to read official xbox disks). my question is, should i adjust the pots on this new laser so that the laser is stronger? i've heard that will shorten the life of the laser but i'm wondering if they were even turned up high enough in the 1st place?

Use a multimeter to check your ohm reading, if you do adjust the resistance, you want to go down in tenths of ohms not whole ohms.

If the value is 7 ohms try 6.5, if it is 2 ohms try 1.8. The lower the resistance the quicker the laser will burn out.

which screw should i adjust? the phillips has 2 pots.

Try one and if it makes no difference put it back in the same spot as that one was the CD and then the other is the DVD.

Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.

Quick question I am finding difficult to search online.
Like most, I mainly play games directly from the hard drive, but do occasionally like to play my games on disc. I am wondering if there is an application out there that gives you the option of disabling the dvd drive on startup?
I want to keep my dvd drive alive for as long as possible, and I cringe everytime I boot the Xbox and the laser searches for a disc that isn't there. It seems I am just degrading the lifetime of the drive that way. If I can disable the drive when I am not using it, I bet I would be able to squeeze more life out of it.
      Thanks!

Hi everyone, first sorry for my English but I'll try to do my best.
I got a problem with softmoding my Xbox.
I followed step by step all the instructions from tutorials to softmod my box and I'm in front of a problem I feel the only one who it happens.
I'm in possession of a usb key 2Go and a usb/controller cable. I format it on my pc in fat, get in my box, got the error message then recognised by the box as memory card 2a, back in the pc using xplorer 360 to get the umod files in, and when back to the box, still recognising it as an empty memory card...
Got another usb key, same process for same result...
      Any idea?
For me it's only to emulate all old entertainment systems I got in my game room and avoid switching all the connections anytime I want to play from one to the other.
Anyway thanks a lot for taking some time to help me.
      Greetings.

      Hi there,
Xbox owner since the latter days of the consoles life, still have my first owned box, shes a bit tired and needs some love, after running an old softmod for the longest time, I've decided to take the plunge and give it a refresh with some new software and a hardmod. I know I'm very late to the game but if I can breathe new life into my old machine I'll be happy!
Just thought it would be good to pop my head up and say hey instead of being a serial lurker.
