I would still flash the TSOP using the softmod drive you have now.

Then get you hands on one of startech converters and a good quality 80 way IDE cable

https://www.amazon.com.au/StarTech-com-Drive-Optical-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00EOJNGC2

or you could use a cheaper version something like this.

The links needed to flash the TSOP chip are both on the top of the main board

Then you load a install DVD and reboot the Xbox and follow the prompts.

The TSOP (Thin Slim Outline Package) is just a IC that holds the boot BIOS used by the Xbox to start much like a PC has a BIOS.

I would suggest you search Youtube for flashing a Xbox TSOP.

Once that's done the Xbox can then load non-genuine disks (SlaYer,Hexen,Aid)

And if you are not confident in soldering you can use conductive paint to link the 2 points

Both achieve the same thing but the TSOP flash is more permanent and if a hard drive fails you can then fit a new drive and load a install disk and start again.

Or if you have made a backup image of your working drive you can restore the backup to a new drive and away you go as a hard modded Xbox the hard drive can work unlocked.

So no stuffing around with unlocking/locking hot swapping of hard drives.

Q: Is a TSOP flash safe to do.     A:  In my view yes it is .  I only fit modchips in version 1.6 Xbox's and Flash the rest.

Q: Can it brick my Xbox.                A: Yes but the risk in no greater than hot swapping the hard drive and in my view it is safer and less chance of damage compared to hot swapping.

Conductive paint is fine to use my only advice would be to clean the PCB where you are going to apply the paint and use a toothpick  to apply the paint and the paint will dry out over time and could flake off so I would suggest that after you have flashed the TSOP you clean the paint off.

If the Board is a version 1.2-1.4  I would flash the IND 5004.67 BIOS  and for the version1.0-1.1 I would use a X2-5035.67 or the IND 5004.67. That way you can use a 2tb or even a 3tb hard drive.

If you have any more question just ask.

Only flash a 256k bios and check your tsop chip before you flash just in case you have a winbond tsop.

If you're going the soldering route, as I learned very quickly, the secret is to use extra flux. Even if you're using solder with a flux core it still tends to stick to the soldering iron rather than bridge the two small points. However paint on some roisin flux around the area beforehand and the solder will usually go much more easily where you want it to go.

Excess flux can be cleaned off with isoproyl alcohol afterwards.

Yes flux is always your best friend when soldering circuit boards.

And I would recommend a flux paste over a liquid as well.
