Kamshaft
I'll do my best to describe the strange issue... I received a dead 1.6 xbox. Wouldn't power on. I changed all the bulging caps that were noticeably damaged. NOT all of them. (Maybe I should) Now the xbox powers on and works flawlessly, HOWEVER, when I power down the console. The console doesn't power back up. But, when I pull the power cord from the back and let it sit for a bit, it can power back on normally. I tried doing a google search and search this site with no luck. Help! Ideas?

brooselee
If the caps were really bad, you might check for trace rot going to the front of the xbox. A lot of power on/off issues can be fixed with repairing traces. There are quite a few pictures out there for the common areas to check. Thanks for the input though.
lopenator
very likely the transistor near the clock cap could be dying. check the collector and if its not 3.3v it may need replacing. have you checked the transistor?
SoftMachine
As lopenator said, the transistor next to the clock cap, or the clock cap itself may be failing, either of those are usually what's wrong when 1.6s have power issues unrelated to the CPU caps. I'd replace both and see if the issue goes away, I think the transistor is a MMBT3906 sot23, clock cap is 1F 2.5V or higher this is the transistor we're talking about: Edited October 10, 2023 by SoftMachine
Kamshaft
I did not replace the clock cap yet (the orange one right?), I'll replace it and if it still persists, I'll replace the transistor. Thanks guys! I'll report back in order to help someone reading this thread in the future. Edited October 10, 2023 by Kamshaft

I have not. I'll test it also, over and above replacing the orange clock cap
Marty
Did you use the correct value for the capacitors. Are they all oriented properly?
Bowlsnapper
Is that where the clock cap is on that board? How have I not noticed that before? I was looking at the bottom going, um... Where the hell is the clock cap?

big F
Similar things happen to PC’s when the equivalent transistor goes south.

Just a capacitor. Edit:Yes, that capacitor will do and it is the proper location.
