In my view that board is BER (Beyond Economical Repair) as there is a real good chance the traces that connect though the LPC port holes to the top of the board ( the holes are also via points ) are probably broken. You will need to remove the pin header to fully inspect the traces and that can cause more damage unless you have above soldering experience. The three points in yellow are Via points and there are others that connect only on the top of the board. If you are trying to read the eeprom to save the old HDD then using external reader/writer is the way to go or swap the eeprom chip to another 1.6 board also works, But as you said you are trying to read the eeprom to make a new HDD that's not going to help. Sounds like the sata adaptor has failed as you can see the SSD drive on a PC and the Xbox loads from the original hard drive. You should be using a 80 way IDE cable anyway for data reliability and I would try that before reformatting the SSD. No the USB on the X3cp is connected to the game port 3 and 4. And a best the USB is 1.1 is 12Mbps. If you are talking about substituting a USB thumb drive for a HDD that works but it's still slower than a HDD and less reliable. The sort answer is No the USB is mainly to use a thumb drive as a memory card or for a keyboard/mouse setup. You can buy a game port to USB from eBay or make your own as that all the X3cp USB port is doing anyway. This is a quick one I made from a DVD receiver. I tested a 2tb last night it formats F drive to 1tb and G drive takes the rest (831gb approx.) And it will format a 3tb to F and G drives to the maximum of 1tb (1024gb) each. Format the new HDD with FATXplorer 3.0 beta then copy the clean C and E files to there respective drives, Then down load the pre built Xbmc4gamers from rocky5's GitHub and copy that to E drive, Now fit the HDD to the Xbox and it should boot straight to Xbmc4gamers. The EvoxM8+ cee 67 noDVD (X4G) bios is set to boot to xbmc4gamers from E:xbmc/default.xbe in it's boot list. I used LBA increasing BIOS partition table on 2tb HDD it then formatted c, e, to the correct size and it made F drive as 1tb and G as 800 and something gigabyte. If you put the clean C and E files in the respective drives the Xbox will boot to a stock dash, I tried to boot to the OGXbox installer and when using EvoxM8 and the Ind bios files on a Open Xenium chip from a cold boot I got a error saying is a movie or audio CD and to remove it but when I used the X2-5035.67 bios it was happy to boot the install disk. I have seen some take quite while to load when there in no DVD drive. o you just have the install disk in the DVD drive and select a bios file from the launch menu. In the launch menu you need to use "add a item" to copy a EvoxM8 bios file or you can FTP a 1.6 compatible (EvoxM8 plus or the X2-5035.v16) bios the mod chip. Can you give the bottom of the board a clean in this location . Inside the red box are the traces that connect the buttons to the system management controller chip. Soft modes and hard mods (Modchips/ Bios reflash) don't play nice with each other and you will get a black screen and it could also be tiring to load a bios file that's not suitable for the 1.6 If you power on the Xbox with the Eject button you should get the Open Xenium menu but it will be a washed out pic with lines though it if not then there is a problem with the Open Xenium fitting. That capacitor is slightly easier to change compared to the ones next to the heat sink/power connector. The ones next to the heat sink take a lot more heat to remove.
