And I fixed it!
Both the power and cdtray issue was surprisingly easy to fix. Now I am hoping Slayers evox auto installer is the right way to go, and then I should be done.

that was actually pretty easy, thanks for all the help.

I have a soft spot for the Slayer installer as I have been using it for longer that I care to say and the only other disk I would suggest is the OGXbox installation disk.
I have also not had a good run with the Hexen disks and still have some pet hates with the 2021 version.

Which BIOS did you flash although I would say it has worked

It properly is having problems loading the dash especially if it was soft modded try loading the install disk and power cycle the Xbox and it should boot to the DVD.

Just the default, Evox m8+ CEE FG noDVD (evoxdash.xbe) (256kb).

But that is the problem, no booting to dvd. Unless that bios has it searching the hard drive for a long time before it will boot to disc. Anyway I am doing to try checking all my IDE connections, and if it will boot without the hdd I will see if just disconnecting it will fix the hanging.

Sweetdarkdestiny helped me over on the install disc thread, but I did not want to keep filling that up with unrelated discussion. So it is confirmed that it is a HDD issue. Right now I am trying to get dvd booting to work to hopefully fix the issue. He thinks that wdidle3 will fix my problem, but it needs a dos based OS to run and right now UEFI seems to be messing with my ability to boot UBCD.

But I have found another bigger IDE hard drive. it seems to be working with a linux mint installation on it. I can connect this to my computer with USB. What sort of formatting do I need to do to try out this hdd as an option?

Any HDD which isn't locked to another XBox or PC ect. should work. And the installer should see it on boot that you have a non XBox HDD/New HDD in your XBox and it should create the needed partition table and then it should boot on.

You could put the HDD in your USB enclosure and in windows you could delete the entire partitioning. After that you could try again to boot the HDD with the installer. And power up the XBox with the DVD already in your XBox DVD drive.

didnt work. still just boots to service needed with an unalocated volume.  jumper is in same position, but not labeled. switch to org hd and boots to disc. strangely it does not show the linus logo as loading, but it works so idc.

did eventually figure out how to turn off uefi mode so i could boot to ubcd, but it does not see my usb drive.

Lol, ok so their was a diagram right on the drive and I was just ignoring it. It was all wrong but fixing it produced no different results. it looks like I had to set to 32gb only mode - Slave, but the usb drive encloser was just ignoring this anyway I guess. Once it seemed to hang forever like the other drive but a reboot got it right back into "needing service".

Often the install disc boots without the background wallpaper, is this normal or a sign of a failing dvd drive?

Still have a one more thing to try with UBCD, but I am getting less confident. But presumably I could reflash an old bios and then when it is booting again with the HDD upgrade with the wd Green setting enabled.

Please advise which bios to flash to work with this idling drive, and if this will be possible with one of the prebuild installers or this will be more complicated. I probably want to just install a dashboard to the org hdd and then use that to flash the bios? If flashing is not really that dangerous, this is probably the best method anyways, it is a pain to reboot my computer and change half a dozen setting in the bios every time I want to get to UBCD.

SO that worked! installing games now, so much nostalgia. This XBMC4gamers seems really slick, but the current version is a little buggy. I was searching amazon for controllers and noticed a Component cable? Would that significantly help, I notice text is pretty blurry? Or would that only effect the dashboard?

Researched online, and it looks like the games natively support higher res than av does. It seems like these cheap cables are slightly worse than the best solutions, but then they are many times more expensive.

I will have to change some settings to tell the games to output better graphics?

Hmm, now it seems that when I go to turn it on, sometimes it will cycle ifself on and off 3 times, without video out. It seems to do this more often when it is warm from just running. I read it is trying to load the bios when this happens and can be a power connector issue. Maybe I should check all my solders? Or do you have any recommendations? Like maybe I should swap in a new PSU?

Just to be clear, it is perfectly capable of running for as long as it wants. It is just starting that causes an issue. And it really seems heat related. Give it 5-10 minutes to cool off and it seems to work most/all of the time, while it almost never seems to want to start up immediately after stopping.

Sound like either a bad solder joint possibly on the PSU or the LPC port or the caps next to the heat sink are failing or it could be the hard drive failing.

I had one that would randomly freeze up plus it would not start some times and that was the 4 pin power plug for the HDD it was the 12 volt wire lose in the plug.

The label says Aladdin Advance v1.0-v1.6

Can you test the voltages on the chip on the board while the Xbox is running.

You should get close to the readings in the pic above

not sure how much variance is ok. the second down on the right is 4v. and the second last left is 3.2. the other 3.3s are 3.25 or 3.24

i also have 4 0s on 12 pin main power connector. on pins 6 to 10 from left to right(looking at the connecting side of the connector)

restarted and it booted right up, so testing inconclusive

The pin that tested as 4 volt is properly the problem and that should be pin 8

I would re-solder all the pins on the LPC.
