Good! Old computers are always good to collect. You can tell that these people are gouging. Some of them know what they have and some of them just follow the prices on ebay. These same drives, one model off and unusable in an xbox, are 30 bucks, probably. That's fucked up, man.

a lot of the old school computer stuff is actually pretty cheap it's not that bad for two computers one that I built and the other one pre-built Dell done which I have $200 flat in both of them and that was also building one

just don't do what the YouTubers tell you to do because then you're going to pay out the ass

Hello, I use FreeDOS and the DVD drive with a 40-wire cable. I have flashed at least a dozen without any problems.
Luckily in my country Spain you can still find them for less than €10, even for €5
I have also tried the 8164B model but the results are poorer, it has less compatibility and does not work on XBOX no hack

I don't know what my luck will be revisiting of this project and it will be soon as I like to pick these things back up in the winter so we'll see what happens..

I have to admit I have not looked at the prices of the Optical drives for the better of 2 months now when I go to pick up the project again I imagine that they'll be at the same price if not greater regardless to whichever model I go with

sometimes you'll find one under $80

regardless this project will go slow for me as the drives are not exactly cheap so it will be one drive at a time tell I have success with at least one then I'll give it a break for a little bit

till I have success with at least one I might as well be smashing my own kneecaps with a hammer

Do you have a wiring guide you could recommend?

For anyone wondering, the 8163to8050flasher.exe in the 1fichier link above is from my GitHub repo: https://github.com/Hendi48/gdr-tools/tree/master/Flashers

I created it 2 years ago after being frustrated that I couldn't get the DOS-based flasher to work on my hardware since my IDE controller was too new. Flashing from Windows is much less of a hassle anyway.

Thank you dude. Sorry I took so long to reply. Life got in the way.

Still did not work lol. I started the program and it stopped and threw a "System failure error" at 2%.

Regardless I appreciate the help from you and everyone else in the thread. I will keep fucking around until I get results.

SO HERES A FUCKING UPDATE.

After wallowing I remembered I bought a second 8163b incase the first one was corrupted. Flashed on the first try. BIOS reads it as GDR8050L.

Next step is to install OpenXenium and I'll finally have my Xbox back, and better than it was!

I'm so happy I could cry. Thank you everyone again. This community is awesome.

I had to get an old PC. Sony Vaio something or another running XP sp3. This is after getting a couple of garbage PCs. Having to restore the computer. Having to reinstall Windows, which includes calling the activation number because the online activation no longer works.

I was attempting this on and off for 3 or 4 years and stopping each time because of frustration. But sunk cost fallacy and all that.

Check eBay for a PC. Facebook Marketplace refurbishers burned me too many times.
