  1. I figured the pvm would be quite a task to deal with I don't think I would ever take on a pvm you're much braver Soul than myself
  2. yeah when it comes to the capacitors I just do one at a time and yes I have seen print on the PCB I would also have to say that my experience with TVs in general is very slim however I have a good idea of what is in them especially old CRT I have messed with those a little bit as for plasma TVs I have no experience if there's anything in there that is high power I will recognize it obviously I will understand the capacitors beyond that no please do not be concerned I am no fool I don't go poking where I don't know and I do thoroughly look
  3. rock on thanks for the mention of the brands.. yes it's definitely a time-consuming thing sometimes I am not a pro by any means but I can get through it generally without tearing things up.. haha the part I always dread is taking it apart and especially when it's large heavy and complicated my fear is always breaking something during disassembly or reassembly I've always had pretty good luck but the dread of breaking it rides on the shoulders pretty hard.. my tactic if I can and is permitted I like to look at everything that I need to replace order it then take it out one at a time and replace it.. I have a horrible habit of forgetting what goes where otherwise yes I document with pictures and noting it down so that I don't lose track of where everything goes I would have to definitely agree about the heat output on that thing... it is tremendous of course the wife likes the heat output she prefers everything to be warmer so for her it's like a heater for the game room anyway I appreciate the information and I always appreciate the pictures it's really cool to see what other people got and how they have their setup pretty neat thanks for sharing
  4. fantastic to see that this thread is still kicking and of course Bowlsnapper demonstrating his Utopia of Awesomeness Bowlsnapper I don't know if you remember the TV I picked up last year sometime Midsummer for free I'm going to go through it and see if anything is needing replacing I doubt it but good to check reason for going through it originally is because it's got some dust back there I'd like to get it all cleaned up it has 4 80mm fans at the top of the Shroud at the back they look like they could be cleaned IF I find any capacitors that are obviously in need of changing what brand of capacitor would you recommend for these type of TVs or if anyone else has got suggestion for the sake of ease I'll post the information again Panasonic th-42pz700u
  5. I don't know what my luck will be revisiting of this project and it will be soon as I like to pick these things back up in the winter so we'll see what happens.. I have to admit I have not looked at the prices of the Optical drives for the better of 2 months now when I go to pick up the project again I imagine that they'll be at the same price if not greater regardless to whichever model I go with sometimes you'll find one under $80 regardless this project will go slow for me as the drives are not exactly cheap so it will be one drive at a time tell I have success with at least one then I'll give it a break for a little bit till I have success with at least one I might as well be smashing my own kneecaps with a hammer
  6. Excellent now all I have to do is pay some scalper $150 for the drive awesome
  7. a lot of the old school computer stuff is actually pretty cheap it's not that bad for two computers one that I built and the other one pre-built Dell done which I have $200 flat in both of them and that was also building one just don't do what the YouTubers tell you to do because then you're going to pay out the ass
  8. I'm not worried about the money aspect of it I had fun and enjoyed myself yeah it might be a brick but it was learning experience and I got two older PC Towers out of the deal that I enjoyed messing with and yes I am going to do it again
  9. yeah I'm going to try again and I'm going to use the fixed version next time I've done a little bit of talking and some research I think I've done everything correctly but I need to use fixed version the drive still technically partially works so I'm not too disappointed it's going to get put away on the shelf and used for Xboxes that don't have a drive to test them overall I enjoyed the learning experience I think I know what I need to do for next time
  10. I literally just started looking on your YouTube channel.. i had to step away for a brief minute came back seen I had an email seen the link thank you for your help
  11. now for the 8164b is the process basically the same just different Flasher?
  12. okay so basically luck of the draw well I'll keep going thank you for that information I was driving myself nuts I kept going back over everything haha
  13. going back to this I either did not flash this correctly or the flash did not take I use the application that flashes off desktop of xp when ran the application it prompted with information to follow I did all the following steps executed The Flash then rebooted the computer and what you see on the last picture there is what it said honestly if it turned into a paperweight I'm not worried the experience of doing this was pretty fun I am definitely going to attempt it again I want to learn unless someone can chime in and give me some information to potentially try to correct it if possible or what I might have done wrong
  14. I understand its purpose I'm just thinking to myself basically what have I done to make this not work correctly. my thoughts boil down to either I did not assemble it correctly I will post a picture of the drive model and the result after the Flash
  15. I understand that the optical drive has to be flashed I believe I've accomplished that and I knew what you meant by Drive Ready or pin 10-CD-ready. I did go through the connections last night everything seems to be in order I don't know what's going on
  16. Drive Ready so does that mean that I did something wrong that I need to go back and look? I did use this drive prior to install Windows XP on a machine it also copied drivers off of a disc just fine.. just in case anyone asks while I'm waiting for verification on Drive ready I am going to go back and look to make sure all my connections are correct
  17. okay I believe I have successfully flashed the drive sorted out all the connections with resistors in the order it is to be.. however I'm having an issue where I go to turn the console on insert a disc it doesn't want to read however if I then reset the console with the disc in it will read the disc I also noticed that on the dashboard it says that the disk drive is opening when it's doing nothing I also left pin 9 data unconnected to anything as it didn't reference it to be connected to anything is that correct or unless I failed to understand? side note after I flashed it it did say GDR 8050L I was curious and went and looked at what it would say after and is that correct?
  18. That was something that went through my mind was what did they have set on this how bright is it what did they do that is pretty interesting I had no idea that they had calibration discs like that
  19. yeah that's the first thing I did was factory reset the TV I didn't change anything after and I didn't select movie mode theater mode whatever I never or any of that
  20. This is a interesting topic I was wondering if there were others out there that could be used now that I'm learning more about it. when I first started I just approached it by myself and got a bunch of information from random sources and a lot of people were talking about it and using the StarTech and of course I went with one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ only cuz I didn't know and still have little information I also failed to find anything else out there or at least on a quick search it's been some time now so I don't remember how well I would have looked so if here or somewhere else has a list that would be great or if you guys are planning on starting one even better
  21. Set aside from PC games I think the original Xbox is probably going to be the oldest I play for consoles set aside from the Super Nintendo only cuz I have one game on there I like to play Then I think the only other console I ever took a liking to was the GameCube and some of the other Nintendo stuff I never really got into the emulators I literally just play the original Xbox games on it HA! I'm sure there's people in here who are going to find that lame I figure if I wanted to play those games just get the console but there really wasn't anything that I had interest in so like I said the Super Nintendo was it The reason why I even mobbed the Xbox is to preserve the games that I have which are very few at that but at least once or twice a year I go back and play one of them until I beat it once again might be lame to someone but I enjoy it yeah come to think about it the only two older consoles I would have ever come into contact with was the Atari and Super Nintendo when I was a kid Then we would not get a new console until the original Xbox was to come out
  22. I meant to ask you about the OLED TVs that's a thing right and are they really compared to plasma? I seen a thing about it a long time ago and forgot the details is OLED really that big of a deal and would it be worth it for Retro Gaming?
  23. yeah thank you for the info I'm learning a little bit of the time with it
