Hi guys,

Bought a v1.3 from gumtree just to get into soldering TBH. I replaced the three capacitors near the CPU and removed the clock one too. The box looks like it doesn't have any mods done, and i don't see any corrosion. It does look like it works, as i can eject the disc and it seems to run, but i get no display or audio. I have tried another cable, but with the same result. Any pointers to what i should check? I have ordered a mod chip just in case the bios is bricked, but otherwise i am not sure what to check.

Typical symptoms of what's known as a COMA console.  The BIOS/kernel stored in the Thin Small Outline Package (TSOP) on the motherboard has become corrupt.  It just takes one byte at the right location and the console will start up with the eject ring solid green as if all is okay; however, there's no video or audio output.

Not an easy repair for a v1.3 Xbox since its flash memory chip only holds 1 copy of the BIOS (256KBs).  V1.0/1.1 consoles used a 1MB flash with 4 copies of the BIOS.  You were able to force the console to boot from one of the other copies of the BIOS in hopes that it would boot one of them properly.

Installation of a modchip will most likely fix the console.

Which AV cable type are you using: composite (Yellow/Red/White RCA jacks), component (Red/Green/Blue video and Red/white audio RCA jacks), or other?

Thanks for replying (I didn't get an email notification).

I have been reading around this forum, and yes it did seem to me that it has the symptoms of a COMA console, but I didn't see a fix for machines that aren't <v1.1. I have ordered the Aladdin XT Plus 2 - and will see if that will help. Will I be able to flash the original bios if the xbox boots with a modchip?

I am using composite cable to an HDMI device, although my older TV does have scart, which produced the same result of no display.

No. Once the Xbox boots from the LPC attached flash memory chip, it disables access to the TSOP flash chip on the motherboard.
