tadsz
Hi, I'm trying to help out a long-distance friend to get their untouched xbox working again. Absolutely no reaction to power on, probably faulty power board, power cable, or maybe the clock capacitor problem. As the xbox is untouched, there's no backup of the HDD and save files are important for nostalgic reasons as well as the ability to replace the HDD in case of failure. The most efficient way is a softmod and backup of eeprom.bin and copying the save files. To get there, you have to go through quite some steps to softmod and access your xbox through FTP. (Doable, probably even easier than what I'm trying to suggest) If modding is not going to happen any time soon, I was wondering if it's possible to make a clone of the HDD by using GhostImage or some other imaging tool to backup the enitre HDD. Would rewriting this image to a new HDD (possibly bigger) make the new HDD work directly as intended? I don't think his PC can host IDE drives anyway, but I was just wondering if this would work. SS_Dave
If the Xbox is not working then making a softmod is not going to help and then you have the issue of obtaining the HDD key from a non working Xbox. I would look in to repairing the Xbox or getting a 2nd Xbox of the same version and swap the EEprom and the HDD. Yes you can clone a hard drive and I use a stand alone HDD cloner but the master HDD needs to be unlocked. Cheers SS Dave Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.

It's going to be tricky as the HDD will only unlock on the non-working xbox. A second xbox is incoming which has a faulty drive so almost all parts will be able to be swapped to troubleshoot the issue. Can a HDD be unlocked outside of the xbox? SS_Dave
I am talking about the EEprom on the Xbox main board as it holds the HDD key that has to match the HDD key. There is 2 ways 1 is to read the EEprom from the non working Xbox and write it the a working xbox of the same model (eg 1.0 - 1.1 or 1.2-1.4). The 2nd is remove the EEprom from the non working Xbox and refitn to the new working board. After doing the EEprom swap the hard drive from the non working Xbox will now working the new Xbox. I still think it's probably easier to repair the non working Xbox Cheers SS Dave Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.
