K0rN b4LL
I got an OG Xbox with a Samsung Ver B drive that won't spin up when I put a disc in the system. It doesn't give me any error messages and I can still access the dashboard menu and files, but the disc just sits there and the drive won't spin the disc. I'm not too familiar with the insides of the drives, but is there any way to replace whatever motor controls that? I tried looking up a replacement drive and all I could find were "not functioning" or "not tested" drives. If not replace the rubber belt at the front under the tray as if the tray isn't closing properly the drive will not check to see if a disk is present. It would be extremely unlikely to be a failed motor Have you cleaned the laser pickup lens with a Qtip and isopropyl? Also on the Samsung drives there is a row of resistor banks next to the 40 pin IDE connector that could have failed and the other possible failure is the SMD capacitors on the PCB. When looking for a replacement DVD drive it doesn't have to be a Samsung drive as all the OG Xbox DVD drives are interchangeable. Also keep this in mind when looking for a replacement drive If you can find a Xbox that's un-modded you have a better chance the DVD drive is in better condition, I find the ones that are soft modded ( or even chipped) with the stock HDD generally have a worn out DVD as they have played copied disk's most of there life, Ones that have had the HDD upgraded will tend have a better DVD as the game's has mostly been played from the HDD and not the DVD drive. Best to hard mod it and don't worry about the DVD drive. Not saying it's defiantly the fault but usually a good place to start before looking at the spindle motor.
K0rN b4LL
Ok, thanks guys I'll check that out. *Do the Samsung A and B drives use the same laser? I have a version A that is throwing error code 12 at me. Granted the laser might be the issue there again but might be worth swapping before buying more stuff. Zach7903
I have the same disc drive with the same issue. I fixed a dead resistor on one of the packs near the IDE port, but the drive will not spin up the disc. It does spin it, but extremely slow. I do see that the laser moves and I do see a red laser when I close the tray. I was thinking maybe this could be due to bad caps? Could anyone point me in the correct direction to get it fixed as I would love to have a backup for my Hitachi drive. SS_Dave
What happens if you load a audio CD? will it spin up within a second or 2? If it is still slow to spin then I would try changing the caps on the drives PCB. It it starts playing the audio cd then you probably have a failing laser pickup. Zach7903
Never thought to try a CD, I'll try that after work and report back. One thing I forgot to mention was that after about 2-4 seconds after shutting the tray with a disc in it the console reports a dirty or bad disc error. If it is the laser pickup, are there any replacement lasers even out there for these?
