Philips Vad6011/21 Disc Laser Lens Replacement Still Not Working

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just replaced my Philips VAD6011/21 Disc Laser Lens with a Disc Laser Lens for Xbox SPU-3141 Philips Microsoft original from ZedLabz https://www.ebay.com/itm/Disc-Laser-Lens-for-Xbox-SPU-3141-Philips-Microsoft-original-ZedLabz/333312052835?hash=item4d9af24e63:g:khoAAOSwGcpfEEyk

Unfortunately it is still not reading my xbox games discs.  I have the Rocky5 Softmod and it states a DVD drive status of "unknown".  It seems like I did it correctly and desoldered those two points on the new Disc Laser Lens.  Sometimes I will get the "Empty" status too.

I tried Pot tweaks on the old laser and then that helped for a very short time so I bought the new laser after it stopped working.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

i've tried those same exact lasers from the same exact dealer and i didn't have good success with it. another user posted in here how he did have good success with it. so they are probably hit and miss. try a return and exchange since u got from ebay. if the next one doesn't work then u can try the pot tweaks on the new one to see if u can get it to read long enough to install the soft mod. also, check that all protective tape has been removed from the laser. i remember at least one piece being over the lens itself.

Thanks.  I will attempt a return and exchange.  I wonder if I jacked it up when I removed the two solder blobs.  I did remove the protective film but almost didn't notice that.    I'm going to buy a solder kit with the sucker for my next attempt.  Luckily I have the Rocky 5 softmod installed on it but was wanting to play the xbox games via disc.  It is a huge bummer it didn't work out.

u don't need a solder sucker for those ground points. just rake a hot iron across them a few times.

I just read in Huang's "Hacking the Xbox" a warning that the fanless heatsinks are prone to overheating if operated without the disk drives installed over the motherboard. I was just about to replace my 1.0 GPU heatsink (with the fan) with the later, fanless, one with the idea that I'd reduce the noise. But now I'm having second thoughts, as I will not be replacing the disk drives over the motherboard.
Can anyone offer me some sage advice on whether or not i should keep the 1.0 heatsink?
I may end up shaving ~1" off the top for a slim build. Would this eliminate the potential risk of overheating?

xbox controllers are made in an annoying way so that the buttons are not easily fixed when the they stop registering. i don't know the terms here so i'm going to describe what i'm trying ask as best possible. i'm also really tired and my brain is about half asleep. anyway, the pcb has something similar to black tape with the little black pads under it instead of having the black pads on the rubber thing itself(the rubber piece that goes under the buttons). so it is very difficult to replace that tape thing when buttons presses stop registering. has anyone made a modified rubber thing with the black pads made onto it so the black tape can be peeled off and thrown away?

      Hi Everyone,
I picked up another XBOX on eBay that was really clean never been opened. It has a strange issue though, if you power on it will take about 1-2 minutes to boot to the dashboard.
If you power on and open the disc tray during the start-up animation it will boot straight away.
I opened the XBOX and the clock capacitor had leaked so that got removed and 3 more capacitors had popped so they got replaced today. The motherboard has been completely cleaned.
The disc drive works fine once powered up and games run no problem.

Anyone had this issue? Is the disc drive on its way out?

      Thanks in advance
