Could a dodgy controller cable cause a short that causes sudden power down of console??

As the title says. I have a console that sometime experiences a random power down. I have left the console running for ages on its own and the power down has not happened, then I have been just flicking around in PrometheOS or XBMC4Gamers for a few moments and the console has shut down.
This console has been recapped and has no issues booting up at all.

However the controller I have been using has a split in the cable right at the top where it joins the cable relief before going into the controller itself. Could this cause a short that causes the console to power down. I am running Cerbios which has a button combo to power down the console and wondered if it could this that is triggering.

Pic of cable split for reference...

If its not this what else could it be?? I'm stumped lol

EDIT - So I have narrowed it down. Its nothing to do with the controller, it only seems to happen with in either the PrometheOS dash OR XBMC4Gamers. It can happen in seconds or it can happen after 15 mins, its totally random.

As a test I left the console running with a game playing for 2 hours and no power down. Leaving it on either dash will eventually power down. I have checked and XBMC shutdown timer is OFF.

Running Cerbios, but seeing as I have had the same random power down while in PrometheOS menus (which runs before Cerbios is even loaded) I think we can rule out the bios being the issue.

not sure about the boot sequence of xbox since it loads everything from bios rom, but could be a bug in the bios image itself. try downgrading.

PrometheOS boots from my Xenium chip, Cerbios is then launched by this. If I boot with Eject then I get the PrometheOS OS which is similar to Xenium OS as it runs on the chip before the actual Xbox bios has booted.

The fact that I get the random power down whilst in the chip OS says to me its more of a hardware issue than software and something is causing a short or similar.

The console literally just goes dead, its not a shutdown just instant off.

Upgraded RAM?

This console doesnt have upgraded RAM..... yet.... I am about to attempt that today if all goes to plan lol.

While I am at it I will strip it right back and rebuild hopefully this will stop whatever is causing the issue as its definitely seems to hardware related. It could even be the SATA adapter causing a short because of the extra Molex connector the Startech ones have and the fact that its all crammed in behind the HDD. With My 6Tb HDD there is no room to lay the extra Molex out flat on top of the HDD like there is on a 2Tb drive.
