Xbox stutters? Normal or psu/cpu issue?

Recommended Posts

Hey people!

Just wondering how much level of stutter in games is normal compared to say an issue with cpu or psu caps?

Im pulling my hair out in trying to tell if my stuttering is normal as it’s an old console with a max frames of 30 or if i need to sort an issue out.

Iv sinked a bit of money into this and would love to have some clarification and closure.

Note:
Softmodded with rocky5 1.1 revision xbox

Hard drive swapped to a WD 2tb hdd EZRZ (ending serial)

Upgraded 80 wire ide cable

Cheap sata to ide adapter

No boot up or power issues and disc drive works well and responsively

Main games iv tested are only splinter cell CT and halo CE (which i understand are demanding games and do drop fps)

What is normal? And what isnt? Would a video of said games stutter help? How is the gameplay meant to look on a healthy console? Please advise me guys!

Thanks

Youtube has some full playthrough videos of both games that you could check out. That would give you the best possible answer as far as what the difference is. The solution could be a number of things. First suspects would be the caps and the clock cap mainly if it is still in there.

Iv checked playthroughs. One is smoother at times then mine (has some stuttering through) and the other video is one from like 12 years ago and has quite a lot of stuttering, to be honest either the same or more. So im stumped on whats normal. If one playthrough is stuttery is it having issues as well?

only good point, is that the playthrough from 2010 lagging is the xbox is newer at that time and less likely to stuff up.

if its the caps, which ones would it be? Would i have to get a meter or something?

I had stutter on MGS2 cutscenes. Found out i had broken connection on one corner wire of 80 pin ide cable. Check cable, connections, maybe crappy ide adapter. Its HDD related. Since HDD is fine, most likely 80pin cable or adapter. Since you have to fold cable in crazy ways, ripped cable can happen.

Ohhh maybe its this. As when i tried pulling the ide wire out of the cheap sata to ide adapter the little plastic part of the ide cable snapped off. Nothing happened to this wire itself but the plastic thing that holds it together. Maybe could be this?

Is it possible that hot running processors can slow down enough to cause frameskipping but not fully freeze the console?

Well my temps under load are around 50 degrees? Iv got artic 5 thermal paste and going to reapply, if thats the case would reapplying new thermal paste fix the issue?

50 C I think is totally fine. If that's your temp then I wouldn't worry too much. Your Thermal glue is working fine and I wouldn't worry about thermal pasted since that's the case. That shit is bulletproof, really.

Could you post a pic of the piece of plastic you’re referring to?

Yeah that’s within spec from what I recall. Especially under load. As long as it’s under 60C I wouldn’t replace the thermal just yet.
