Right now there are three main options for the Xbox storage: Us an HDD: Will likely fail after 10ish years according to random people online. It will die slowly with some software here and there failing Use an SSD: Will likely fail after 5ish years according to random people online. One day they just apparently die CF Card: Die after a few years because of constant rewrites. The CF card can only take so many write cycles But what if for the CF card I locked the card (Like an SD has, a physical switch) so that the console could only read from the CF? Then do my game saves on a memory card in the controller? Or just ignore saves altogether if im using it for just system link or emulation? Would that, theoretically, give me the most stable storage option? Or would that cause issues because nothing can write to the card? Or would the Xbox simply not care that its locked?

This is an odd one. Various Emuxtras video collections have been causing me issues with Madmab emulators, some preview videos play, others lock up the Xbox, if I delete all the ones that lock up the emulator the Xbox is fine, it will play 90% of the videos, as soon as it hits one it doesn't like it locks up. I've been on this problem for a couple of weeks or more. I found installing the latest emulator versions has helped sometimes with some emulators, and they no longer lock playing preview videos, others still lock up such as the Colecovision emulator, NeoGensPlusGX and the PSX emulator. On some of the Madmab emulators it won't even acknowledge there are any videos in the video folder, it will just leave the video preview window blank but will still lock up if I hit a game with a known lockup video. Another thing, there was a non-calibrated controller joystick problem with aftermarket controllers causing freezing on some of the emulators, I was using an aftermarket controller so was affected by this, updating versions or just plugging in my stock controller resolved this freezing problem scrolling the menus. All that did is complicated my problem even worse before I saw in the changelogs that was a problem so I was aware of it and could establish when that was the cause of the freezing. At first, I thought perhaps corrupted videos, but today I proved that wrong by removing the HDD from my 1.6 Xbox and putting it into my 1.1 Xbox, suddenly the problem is entirely gone, all preview videos work fine on every emulator. Now I'm totally confused, it's not a software problem, unless it's a 1.6 compatibility problem I'm not aware of, it's a Pal 1.6 Crystal Limited edition Xbox, all new capacitors and no known hardware problems, without the preview videos all emulators work well as do all Xbox Games. Even if my skin isn't set to play the preview videos if the videos are in the folder and I scroll the games it will lock on the games that have the videos that seem to cause the problem. If I change the time that it starts to play the preview video from half a second to 5 seconds or more I can scroll the menu without it locking up, as long as I don't pause on one of the bad game's that I know their video locks it up. If I just disable where it has the option to play movies in the emulator it never locks up. I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone else has encountered this, it would be odd my 1.6 has a fault that only causes freezing in emulators when playing video previews and it works perfectly elsewhere. I spent about a week FTPing all the contents of the 6tb hard drive in it to another Xbox, it didn't freeze once being left on all that time doing the FTP. It gets countless days of gameplay with no freezing. It's running a mod chip with Cerbios 242 on a red Startech adapter, the hard drive in it is brand new and perfectly fine, tested with WD Daigs on a long test. I'm at the point of giving up on this one but thought I'd ask first. My next test I guess is another 1.6 XBox with the same HDD and see if it acts the same.

Hey guys, I have a v1.1 xbox that I softmodded a couple years ago. It's running the Unleash X dashboard, and I was able to play xbox and emulator games through the regular composite connection. I just purchased a Kaico HDMI adapter, in hopes of getting a boost in quality. I hooked up the adapter, and the xbox boots up okay. I checked the signal, and it's showing 720p from the main menu. This is good. Problem is, any time I try booting a game, whether it be a game from disc, or any game off the hard drive, the xbox loses its signal, and I can't get the image to come back on, without restarting the xbox. Any ideas what would be causing this?

Hi, Love this forum and got a lot of great info from here. Recently I dusted of my good old softmod and gave this all a go again after many years. I was able to tsop the xbox and install a larger harddisk. My friends picked up on the idea of having a xbox with emustation and asked me to build one for them as well. So I ended up buying and working on 6 xboxes and harddrives that all went trough their own struggle to get the job done but hey, I made it. Thing is though, at some point I used chimp to format a 500gb WD and it locked it by the end of the session in one of the xboxes. this drive ended up not being used and now I want to use it again but I do not know what xbox it's from. Being all wel prepped I did read all the eeproms from al the xboxes trough simple serial eeprom reader. Extracted them straight of the board with no issues but the sidenote is I never did with this 500gb WD hdd installed. And this is where my confusion is, because what I understand is the eeprom is xbox specific. And the harddrive password is generated trough the hdd serial number and model based on the eeprom. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So all the eeproms I have when I read them in live info beta 3 show me other harddrives. So I connected the harddrive to my ide port refreshed the disk managment, it pops up under disk# and I try to select it in live info without any luck. I tried running chimp in order to unlock the hdd in the slave disk options with all the available eeproms but had no luck. Basically, and I'm sorry this is a long read, I'm trying to find a way to backwards engineer my hdd locking code with the 6 eeproms I have available that all state a different make/brand/sn hdd. Thank you in advance Pascal

A while ago I had a version 1.0 box fail to boot intermittently and every time I moved the hard disk it would come good. The drive is a WD 500 gig Pata/Ide drive. I closed the power connectors in the molex plug and swapped the 40 way cable still the same. As I had nothing to lose I removed the PCB thinking it had dry solder joints on the power and 40 way connectors but I noticed the contacts for the heads and spindle motor are tarnished. A quick clean of the PCB and spring contacts with iso-propyol alcohol and reassemble and it has not missed a beat since (3 weeks and still going and before it was every 2nd day) I now have a Seagate 1tb from a desk computer with the same symptoms and after removing the PCB it looks the same. This drive is 2 years old and has had a max of 1.8tb data transferred to and from it so bugger all. and 1/3 for that was rescuing the data from it Something to keep in mind for intermittent drive problems.
