  1. So, a couple of weeks ago I got my hands on an og xbox. I didn't know anything about the console itself and the og xboxes in general. I've had experience with different consoles, as well as modding them. I got the xbox for about 10 dollars, and it has an upgraded IDE drive which is 80GB and is loaded with heck ton of games and emulators. The modchip installed is aladin, I researched about it and I think I can only use the EvoX dashboard with it, correct me if I am wrong. Initially it had games on the F drive but the EvoX displayed only some programs located in the E drive. I installed unleashX opened it through the EvoX launch menu and it displayed the games in the F drive, but when I tried to play them they were stuck on a black screen not loading. However I managed to resolve the issue, changing the configuration file of the EvoX to display the F drive directory also and now everything launches. A guy on reddit told me that my board is V1.4 and also I removed the infamous clock capacitor. There is an option in EvoX which lets me boot to the original MS dashboard, but it gives me an error code. Someone told me that I had to put my original dashboard files in the C drive, but I don't want to tinker with it before asking here so I don't f*ck something up. I've attached a couple of pictures so you can get an idea what I have on my HDD. I would really appreciate some tips, I would really like to also install the MS dashboard, and possibly switching from EvoX to a more modern dashbord but I am not aware if this is possible with my current mod chip. NOTE: In the picture of the console opened the clock capacitor is still there, I removed it after the picture was taken!
  2. I've been working on an xbox maintenance installer in my language (italian) for a couple of years now and to improve it i'd like to make uleashx xbe files read specific xml configuration files instead of the classic config.xml (like in the Cerbios disc, like on Hexen and like on Rocky5's softmodding tool). I've searched a lot online but i couldn't find any information about it. does anyone know how to make this possible? thanks a lot to whoever can help me
  3. Hello! I decided to open up my softmodded Xbox made in july 2002. It has partially stopped working around 2008 and I remember replacing the hard disk did not help it back then. I dont remember the exact symptoms it had, but I remember considering it broken so I bought another one for cheap and stored this one for 15 years. So I wanted to give a try of repairing it today after learning about the clock capacitor problems, considering the fact that the console is still very clean globally and even have the OG box. When I first tried to turn it on, I had nearly no image showing on the screen, except a very dimmed and freezed green circle in the middle. I turned it back on and everything seemed fine, I was able to play a game with no problem for 5 minutes before deciding to turn it off and open it to have a look. Here is all the photos I took. The clock capacitor obviously leaked, but I can't quite tell how far the acid went as the whole board seem covered in dust. I plan on cleaning the surrounds with vinegar and then with IPA, but I don't know a lot about electronics so I wonder if there was anything you would do or avoid to do in this case. Also, can the softmod mess up something or has it likely absolutely nothing to do with potential failures? I must have played the console 1 or 2 years with the softmod without problems before it broke. Thank you all for your precious help!
  4. Hey guys, Bought a second hand xbox that came hard modded with a sst 49lf020. Seems this xbox hasn't been used in a while as some of the apps are a couple of revisions behind. Should I wipe it clean and start again? Should I buy a different modchip? Attached an image below of the details from EvoX.
  5. Found two X-boxes in the trash, one booted fine (2002 model), the other not (2005). The one that did not start had a USB-port sticking out on a cable on the right side - so mod of some kind Cecking... it has a homemade fan hack (edges cut off a larger fan to fit it and taking power from harddrive connector), USB connector in parallel with control port 4 and a DUO X2 chip hooked to a defective three step ON-ON-ON switch button on the back. It doesn't say GS on the main chip (it's a three IC version with 29F080 flash) - like the one I found here. Found installation instructions for the DuoX2, understood that this is a v1.6 board, chip seemed to be installed OK, fixed the switch - which seems to require just a plain single pole ON-ON version with three wires - the other three pads on the original switch aren't hooked up to function as far as I can see - unless it's some very special original switch. Seems very likely it just shifts the top address-pin on or off - but I didn't check. Had the chip out, Xbox started normally, could start a game (thrown with it), harddrive had saved games, also found out that it should start normally when starting it with the eject button - yes, it did. If having the switch in one position I get three restarts that ends with flashing ring yellow/red. Ejecting still works, DuoX2 flashes steadily red once per second or so. In the other position DuoX2 flashes and eject LEDs are constant green for about 15s then turns to red flashing. If pressing eject the disc stops (if any) but the disc stays in (not ejecting). It seems it's trying to read the disc but nothing interesting happens. Tried downloading and burning "TruHeXen 2021.iso" to DVD-R with imgBurn. Before I waste the entire stock of DVD-R burning them in different ways, is there a trick to start it or should it boot on any Xbox? Scrolling through the iso in a hexeditor seems to give the impression it's legit. I lifted a png from the .iso - says Heimdall's Xbox Engineering Disc 2021 with a metal frame and a screw in each corner. Also fetched TrueHeXen2020.iso - same in 7zip, also has nothing to show if mounted in Windows. I'm thinking flash chip is messed up and perhaps it can be flashed to a working state...? I can desolder it and program it/check it with an eprom-programmer - if I have something to put in there. I can make a reinstall of the chip as well - if that's a plausible problem - looked OK though, don't know what problems might be hidden though. Any ideas? Thanks.
  6. Hello Together, I bought an xbox today and planned to do a softmod. When opening the console to remove the clock capacitor, I noticed that a modchip is already installed. Unfortunately, I can't find any information about this chip. Can you help me further? Can I just ignore the chip or should I pay attention to something? Is it possible to simply install a SoftMod ! Thank you for your help !
  7. Hey Everyone, I just recently got a xbox 1.6 in great shape! super clean and a like new shell. I installed OpenXenium chip inside, upgraded the drive to a 2TB SATA (may go to a 500GB IDE I have hanging around maybe) upgraded to a 80 wire IDE, and it works well, only issue is. The DVD drive is DOA. I found it cheaper to buy another xbox for parts than a working/tested drive on ebay. So I paid $5 +SH for another xbox. This one was listed AS IS and not working, case was fair shape. I got it, it's a version 1.0 and seems to work just fine, the DVD drive works as it should. I placed it into my 1.6 and it's fine. Question now is... do I keep the 1.6 xbox as is and call it a day? or should I move the modchip (it's only plug and play really, just gotta solder new header pins to the 1.0 xbox) to the 1.0 xbox? should I go with the 500GB IDE or 2TB SATA? could I move the heatsink from the 1.6 to the 1.0GPU to get rid of the fan on the GPU cooler on the 1.0? and I would assume the system shell is universal and I could use it either way. With the parts I have, what can I do to make the best xbox I could? Thanks everyone! ~John
  8. Hey guys, I picked up one of N64Freak’s boxes a couple months back and will soon be getting all my hardware going again. I’m curious what you all were suggesting I do with it! A couple things I know I want to look into: PSX/N64 emulation sound enticing, as I’ve had some issues with this on stock systems. Trying to get it to start up as fast as possible via configuration injection is another goal, but I need to get this working on one of my stock machines first and after spending too long on it I nuked the system on accident, I think by flashing a bfm BIOS where I should’ve done a normal one. I also wanna overclock this bad boy and see how far it will go. But it needs better cooling to even attempt that, and of course I need to do this on a stock console properly before I fiddle around with it on here. Thanks for your ideas, guys!
