  1. Hey guys I just wanted your opinions on the mClassic graphics upscaler and if its better than the retroTINK 4K. I've been using the mClassic for a while now and I've been blown away at how much of a difference it makes at fixing jaggies and just making the overall image look almost a generation ahead of its time at least resolution wise. I've heard about the retroTINK but the price is more than an mClassic and I heard It takes some tinkering to get the settings right while the mClassic is plug and play. I want to know if its worth it making the jump to a retroTink rather than an mClassic. I'm also pairing it with a Chimeric HDMI adapter for maximum resolution and clarity, let me know your experience with both.
  2. Project Gotham Racing is by far one of the best racing games on the original Xbox, at least in my opinion. I was recently talking to someone on YouTube, and the idea came to mind of how the game could be reverse engineered to make it playable on PC natively. As some of you may know, PGR 1 still has several rendering issues on emulators to this day, especially on CXBX Reloaded (with several serious texture and sound bugs) and Xemu (where the game runs but there are several Z-order issues [which generally cause problems with structures becoming invisible from certain angles, making us see things we shouldn't] and the game tends to suffer from abysmal power and sound issues where cars sound louder than usual) which are the main emulators for the original Xbox. And although backwards compatibility exists, it (Project Gotham Racing) is non-existent on latest-generation Xbox consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S), and on Xbox 360 it tends to suffer from the same performance issues and FPS drops. This would be one of the main reasons why it would be interesting for me to reverse engineer the first PGR in order to port it to PC and make it natively playable on that platform. The second reason for my interest in reverse engineering the game, is the lack of interest I see in PGR games prior to PGR 2 or PGR 3. Because when talking about the franchise, often times the first Project Gotham Racing, and sometimes its spiritual predecessor, Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast, are never mentioned or are not of interest to many people. So my reasons are: - Lack of interest in general for the first Project Gotham Racing game - Being backed by terrible performance and functionality on emulators and backwards compatibility Now, to that people: I'm not at all, in any way, shape or form, asking for a native PC port of the game or anything like that, I'm simply making this post to get your thoughts on a native PC port of the first PGR, and also learn a bit more about original Xbox game reverse engineering.
  3. Hi I have a 1.6 Xbox with X3 chip and a Xbox 1.6 running Cerbios and the fan noise is extremely louder on my cerbios xbox , peeking at about 59db rather than the x3 non cerbios at about 43db on average. As suggested ... I have dropped the fan speed down in the bios tp 50 and turned on and off again but made no difference at all has anybody got any thoughts on this ? I assume it loads the ini each time you load it or do I need to do something else ? I just made a copy turned it to 50 and ftp's back over. ; Fan Speed 0 = Default, 10-100 = Manual Control, Supports increments of 2's FanSpeed = 50
  4. Hey guys, I've got a 1.2 that I spent the weekend revitalizing with all new fresh capacitors and upgrading the RAM to 128mb. Everything went well. I had Xblast reading all 128mb, and everything was working a treat. That is until I went to pull it apart for final disassembly to clean the case and everything up before putting all back together for the last time. I first removed the SATA/IDE adapter from the HDD, leaving the molex connector in place and holding it by the cables and moved the HDD tray out of the way. It was then, that I somehow managed to let the SATA/IDE adapter dangle enough for it to brush the PSU right along side the big 470uF 250v capacitor without realizing it. And in my excited haste, I had not yet disconnected the power cord from the Xbox... As soon as I saw the bright flash and pop that was the SATA adapter getting completely obliterated, my heart immediately sank. The adapter, of course, is thoroughly destroyed. The logic IC and one of the voltage regulators quite literally exploded. At that point, I knew I'd be extremely lucky if it was the only casualty. On the Xbox itself, it blew the T3.15A on the PSU. I had some spare 3 amp glass slow-blow fuses, so I rigged one up until I get the proper cylindrical fuse to replace it later this week. Surprisingly enough, the PSU still works fine, albeit with a slight discolored battle scar on side of the big capacitor... However the motherboard is a different story. It now 3 boot/FRAGs both with or without the X2.3b lite I've had installed for years present. Thinking I had fried it, not feeling too optimistic about fixing it, I harvested the newly installed RAM, and original RAM but subsequently reinstalled the original, after changing my mind on giving up so quickly. Anyway, I've tried all the troubleshooting methods I could with what tools I have at my disposal, which is not much. All the PSU voltages are good. I've swapped PSUs with another, just in case. One observation I made is that the MCPX X3 gets really hot very quickly, so I'm sort of thinking it's shorted and therefore also toast, and that's what's causing it to FRAG. In any case, I figured, maybe I'd share my story for your entertainment, and maybe even see if any of you had any suggestions on what else I might try to test before I go on the hunt for a replacement board and continue scavenging useful parts from this one.
  5. Hey Crew - I've really been getting into my softmod xbox after discovering them recently and I decided to modify 'tazorax_g' original xbox skin .... I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts and or suggestions Cheers VID_20191105_132650.mp4
  6. i found this through reddit. i'm wanting to try it to get a bigger E drive but i'd have to erase the hdd of one of my xbox's and start all over again. so i'd rather not try this if it won't work. can someone tell me what they think about it. i'll be using a 2tb drive.
  7. Hello everybody. I recently got to thinking about the data retention of the flash memory used in the original xbox. I purchased an original xbox not to long ago that was basically a coma console in that it would have a green light, but no audio or video. Turns out the bios was corrupted or something similar and that it would boot with extreme difficulties after pressing the eject button a bunch of times until the drive ejected. Basically these symptoms. I did manage to flash a custom bios onto the system and that solved the booting issues it was having, but that then leads me to what I have as a discussion today. Looking at the datasheet for the Winbond W49F020 series of flash memory used in my console, I notice that it has a data retention of 20 years. This means that it should hold the data for about 20 years no problem, but it seems like mine started having issues early. By what I can tell, to refresh this data and basically restart the countdown, I need to reflash the bios to the chip rewriting the data. This brings it back to a state where the data is properly stored and is ready to last another 15-20 years. My only concern about the whole thing is that flashing a new bios can go wrong and cause the console not to boot without a mod chip. My question to someone more knowledgeable than me in this topic is, are we going to see more and more stock consoles fail to boot due to corrupt bioses in the up and coming years? I know that 1.0 and 1.1 consoles already have some issues with their 1mb flash chips, but will all sorts of version have issues? ie, 1.0 - 1.6? Is this just a limitation of anything using flash memory in a component used to boot up? I know nothing lasts forever, but I do try to make it last as long as I can. Thanks for taking the time to read through this and I hope it can spark some good discussion on the topic. Also if anything I have here is incorrect, please let me know as I am still learning about hardware in general, and I try my best to be accurate in my information. DobaMuffin
