  1. The speed of SMR is only really slower when writing not when reading because of how it works. maybe the SMR is causing issues with the cache partitions but if the games run fine from the discs in this Xbox then that is not the issue. It could be because of the way them games are mastered on the disc to have files in a set order to allow for faster loading, If i remember correctly some games always played slower when loaded to the hard drive because of file locations, because of how much they optimised the games every extra clock cycle needed to seek data because of location on the drive is a slowdown. them games could probably be brought back to original speed by playing from ISO, or using an SSD.
  2. He may have mistaken the EEPROM and BIOS with each other, if so then bellow is some ways of getting the EEPROM https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:EEPROM
  3. Yes you should try this EEPROM through xblast and see if it unlocks. the HDD key should be the same for both the 200GB and 10GB HDDs so long as they where used in the same xbox. at worst it would just fail to unlock so it will not damage any data. if it doesn't unlock it should still have a chance of pulling the EEPROM from the board with a raspberry PI. so long as the board is powered up you can still recover it this way. https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:PiPROM as for the new drive Error there is a lot of parts that could be the issue. What Bios are you using? What is the Error Code? how are you trying to initialise the HDD?
  4. you would need to unlock the HDD from the 1.6 then you should be able to just drop it in your 1.4, the only thing could be the dashboard boot order so you may need to adjust the Bios boot order or change some files to get it to boot to where you want. if your 1.6 powers on you may be able to read your EEPROM (look at https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:EEPROM) to get the key you need. if you cannot get it to turn on you'll need to remove the EEPROM from the 1.6 and read it manually to get the key. you can then use at least FATXplorer 3.0 beta 21 on a PC or Chimp on the Xbox to unlock it.
  5. He will be using an older softmod and not Rocky5 you may be able to get away with burning Rocky5's install disk and see if that boots. that will hopefully allow you to upgrade the softmod to his. if not then you'll need to use your HDD key and at least FATXplorer 3.0 beta 21 . I should also point out that the hard drive will be locked and windows will have no clue about it. its not a standard formatted hard drive. if you want to know more check out https://xboxdevwiki.net/Hard_Drive you will need to make sure you lock the drive again before putting it back in the xbox or it will error
  6. You'll need to get a copy of the EEprom so you can use the HDD key inside to lock it. https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:EEPROM is some information that'll help getting it.
  7. Are you using an 80 pin IDE cable and the Startech Adaptor?
  8. Not in theory at all. Lack of hardware stops anything more than 128mb from being accessed. more specifically address pins for the chips.
  9. Its not been looked at because the modchips do just that with easier soldering. plus if you have the 1MB TOSP you can just do the switches to get 4 banks to switch between.
  10. I finally got the new Thermal paste last night and done this today. plugged in the machine and it's all back up and running. once again thank you bulkchart32 for that advice.
  11. Hi Everyone.after a long time of being away from the Original xbox I decided to buy one and get back into it for some of the games I have. I got a v1.0 and instantly removed the Clock Cap. I then softmodded it and tsop flashed successfully the latest cerbios v2.02 UDMA5 version (I also replaced the iIDE cable at the same time. everything was fine apart from the loud whine coming from the GPU fan so I bought the v1.2+ heatsink and went and replaced it in the Xbox today. After putting it all back together it turned on and booted into the dash fine (XBMC4Gamers) but after a minute of sitting there it glitched out and it restarted 3 times before doing the red/green flashing light. I think I may have used bad thermal paste that may have been out of date. I reused the metal clamp on the gpu. I also repasted the CPU at the same time but when I went to reattach the clamp it didn't seem to clamp down fully on the CPU either. could the BIOS get damaged while the Xbox is running causing it to now frag? does anyone have any advice on this?
