I think everyone needs to hit the reset button and get their facts straight. There seems to be a lot of assumptions and a little misinformation going around. A year or so ago, @sweetdarkdestiny kindly offered to us, the use of his tool to perform a TSOP flash without the need of soft modding the Xbox. This tool does not provide a way to SOFT MOD your Xbox. Oddly enough, this seems to shine more light onto this problem after learning earlier that @Bowlsnapper was actually not the person that supposedly soft modded the problem Xbox. I say supposedly because I didn't catch this part of the story before offering possible solutions. I may have looked over that fact if it was stated earlier.
It's possible your friend tried to use @sweetdarkdestiny's tool and borked the Xbox.

Lol depends on the job. I slap them into all the 1.6s I get to make things easier. If the buyer wants to upgrade, then have at it. If you get the ones flashable from the xbox, then I stand by them even more. Only hard-core users want something better. Casual users just want it modded with games.

They may work with UDMA5, But might not take advantage of the speed increase it offers. It's always up in the air with the cheaper adapters. I've used plenty myself with no issue and also had some that don't work at all. Even after reflowing all solder joints.

So you tried booting into an install disc and that doesn't load either?
I was referring to the basic white screen provided by the Rocky5 softmod. It's the very minimalistic dash with a few text options such as Apps and Emulators. I always had to assign my own dashboard with an install disc like Rocky5's extras disc or OGXBOXInstaller. I have no clue what you've done over there.
I also must ask, why do things the hard way when we are so spoiled with more modern ways? Not a jab at you, I'm truly curious.

I could be wrong as it's been a long time, but I don't recall even Rocky5's softmod installer adding a dash. It provided a simple version of Unleash for setup, but I still feel like you had to assign a dash.

Not sure about any of that. Amuse me and try to install a dash from an install disc and see what happens. If there is no dash, you will get a black screen on boot.

It was just empty boards I received in a bundle with other stuff. I'm waiting to hear back from him so it may be a while. He wasn't a scammer. He went through a bad breakup and move right after this all went down so xbox stuff got put on hold.

I had about 20 empty OX boards I sent to a guy. He was supposed to send me two back, fully assembled in exchange. Of course that never happened but he is still in touch from time to time. I'm going to try and get them returned since he gor busy with life. Would you be interested in the same deal?

You'll still need to add a dash from the sound of it. I don't recall soft mods doing that automatically.

I dont think that other thread has much clarity on which Aladdin to buy because some work with printed text, some dont. Some work with the extra diodes, resistors, transistors while some dont. Pinning a topic like that doesnt seem helpful because it still doesnt answer the question of which Aladdin to buy. A better solution would be to find a source who is selling Aladdins that work and let everyone know. That way you support someone who is selling good Aladdin modchips vs someone who is not. Of course there is no guarantee the person selling the good Aladdins doesnt start selling the bad ones at some point.

Would it be better to get an external flasher and just correct the mistake?

I'd just be interested in the complete front panel as I already have crystals and an X3. Again though, I can't bring myself to drop hundreds of dollars on it. At the end of the day, it's just a cosmetic upgrade, but damn do they look good.
