  1. First press of the power button turns power on for about one second. As soon as it starts to spin down if I press the power button again it boots normally. Any ideas what could be wrong and what I should try to do to fix it? Thanks!
  2. do you mean what program am i using to draw/create it ... or do you mean how am i going to come up with the steps? to draw/create it I will start with outline style and once a section gets mature I'll sketch it out in pencil first like I showed in the pic in the first post, and then I'm totally open to suggestions on what program to use...probably use word or ppt. I like doing it outline style (like is on the left) and then creating the diagram after the outline is done. However, if there's a free program out there that does that automatically I'm all for that. to come up with the steps in the tree I'll start with the very limited things I know and rely on the forum to inject steps and solutions where I'm missing things. Hope that answers your question, and totally open to suggestions on how to most efficiently create and make this as useful and accurate a tool as possible.
  3. Cool, thanks for the input. I'll start with power functionality since that is the first question that needs to be asked...be forewarned that I'll be on here asking questions quite frequently as I try to run through in my head what the sequential problems would/could be and the corresponding troubleshooting necessary....and also pinging the forum for routine things they have seen as this gets compiled over the next few months.
  4. Is there an OG XBOX fault tree / repair guide out there somewhere? I know its hard or near impossible to record or prep every possible scenario, but Going through this XBOX repair of mine I've found a lot of threads, youtube videos, and suggestions from you amazing folks, but nothing comprehensive on the repair side except an electrician who does some otherworldly stuff trying to determine the fault with a power supply. I know about the XBOX repair guide, but that doesn't have a fault tree like I envision. Not saying a fault tree doesn't exist, just that I haven't come across one. Since I'm trying to track down the Gremlin in my own XBOX and currently the Gremlin is winning, I thought through the process I would document what was done, and add in what could have been done so that it can be a resource for others, especially those new to the community, should -they suffer the same fate. Again if one exists I don't want to re-create the wheel. My XBOX knowledge is banal, so I would be relying on this community to keep me on the correct path, but I'd be willing to organize the thing if you all think it would be a worthwhile endeavor. For example, first thing would be power on Y/N. If No, swap power cords. -> No change ->check fuse functionality-> check plug solder joints. I'll attach a pic of a concept I quickly jotted down probably about a 10% complete, haven't thought it through too much or put any time into it since I don't know if its even needed -- and definitely not saying its the right way or the steps are even in order, but its a concept. On the left side is a descriptive fault check pathway, on the right is the traditional fault tree. Let me know if you think something like this would be value added.
  5. Found a site that said anything less than 100 mOhms was considered low ESR. Given Frosty's earlier comment (thank you!) about using 18...I'll probably try to stick somewhere close to that, less than 30 at least I think will be some good options unless somebody has experience with Caps that didn't work or failed quickly in that range.
  6. Is an ESR of less than 30 mOhms good enough? Is low ESR critical for power supply caps if I replace some of those as well? One of my Power supply's voltages vary by about 10% when the xbox is left at idle for a while. Assume that's a sign of a bad capacitor. Yeah, it exhiits that trace rot behavior problem - powers on by either plugging it in or via eject button...they current theory is that the surmised electrolytic leak is also what is causing the board to shut down uncommanded at at shorter intervals each time.
  7. Thanks. How many mOhms is considered low ESR?
  8. I've run out of Caps and need to reorder. Where are your favorite places to get decent Caps at the cheapest prices? I've ordered from digikey and mouser but the shipping usually costs almost as much as the Caps. What is the recommended ripple current amperage at low and high or does it not matter? Same with impedance, does that matter? Any brands you'd stay away from? Thanks!
  9. I have a second box (the one I pulled the other PSU from) that is now exhibiting the same exact symptoms. That board's middle (of the three) caps has a slight bulge. If I have any spare caps left I'll look to replace that one and see how it goes. From what I have read online, its pretty hard to test caps without special equipment, correct?
  10. Mobo temps show 30s when it powers off. Also swapped AC cables just to make sure that wasn't the problem somehow but it made no difference. There is trace rot on the bottom, but I cleaned up any fluid residue when I got the box and removed the clock cap about a year ago and the power has stayed on fine until the last week. The only artifact was that the power button wouldn't work and it would only power on with the eject button - but other than that it worked without power loss this entire time
  11. Swapped with a known good power supply and the same thing happened. First power on lasted about 3 minutes. Each subsequent power on button press lasted roughly 30 seconds.
  12. Will I be ablet to test to see which one it would be? All I have is a simple multimeter. No obvious bulging/leaking etc visible.
  13. Thanks. Should have mentioned that the mobo caps look fine and I've got the xbox opened up, DVD removed, and Hard drive outside the case. Mobo temps are in the 30s (celsius) when it powers off. A quick look at the PSU caps show no obvious issues either. If it is the PSU, what would cause the PSU to overheat, how could I measure that, and is there an easy fix for it? Thanks!
  14. XBOX 1.2 TSOP flashed with Cerbios that will power up and run for about 2 minutes and then just powers itself off Hit power button again and it powers on right away. This time it stays on for less time...and each iteration of this powers it on for less time than previously until its only on for 15 seconds or so After I let it sit for a half day, it'll run again for a couple minutes and then exhibit the same behavior. This occurs regardless if the DVD is connected during power on sequence (have DVD check bypassed in Cerbios). This sounds like a classic Cap issue...or could it be a power supply issue? To rule out one or the other, what is the easiest way to determine what is giving/causing the power off signal? Thanks!
  15. When using my Philips DVD drives your Cerbios installer was read, loaded, and worked perfectly but 1.5.4 would not boot or load (file was seen in file mgr though). When I switched to the Hitachi DVD drive both worked fine, albeit 1.5.4 ran a bit slow. The confounder to this is media type and DVD drive compatibility issues -the Cerbios installer iso I burned to a CD but 1.5.4 iso was burned twice, onto two separate DVD media (TDK DVD-R and some generic).
  16. Don't know exactly, the drives would spool up but just wouldn't launch the discs
  17. Yes, several times but it had been a long time ago and that's why I was confused when neither of the first two attempts of burning the iso on different media wasn't being loaded either off a power on or with a launch disc command on two different drives...then read somewhere that the iso couldn't load itself and that's where i started second guessing myself if i had forgotten if another file needed to be added to a non game iso to spool it up, when it turns out I just had two consecutive DVD drive incompatibilities. Hardware rule of threes I guess. All good now though, thanks!
  18. Thanks, for the iso clarification...think I confused what I read on another post where .iso couldn't load itself, but maybe that's only if you ftp an iso to the hard drive vice running it off a disc? In this instance, the iso disc wasn't being read...tried it with two different DVD media brands types and two different drives (both philips) on a Cerbios flashed XBOX. Tonight on a whim, decided to try it with a different brand DVD drive, this time a Hitachi. It took a couple of minutes but finally read the disc! Thanks for the help and support! My main reason for the TSOP was to have the no-DVD capability and the ability to throw any hard drive in there...so now I'll install a single dash (there are so many on the disc I've never heard of that I'll have to do my research, hopefully there's a page that explains them all or at least shows a gallery) and I think I should hopefully be set.
  19. Update: Tried recopying all the OGXBOX Installer files (extracted via XDVDMulleter 10.2) to the stock hard drive in my XBOX v1.2 with Cerbios in case something didn't transfer as expected the first time, but still get the same resulting Error 16 when selecting default.xbe I only have the stock HD installed and available right now but plan on installing a larger HD (probably a 1 TB) sometime in the future. Swapped DVD drives (both Philips) but wasn't able to get the Installer disc to auto execute either. Installer 1.5.4 .iso was burned to a DVD-R using ImgBurn at a rate around 2.4x. Anything obvious I am doing wrong or should try differently to make the Installer load properly so i can install dashboards, etc? Thanks
  20. Thanks for the disc, its great! Successfully TSOP'd a v1.2 XBOX using Cerbios Installer disc to put on UDMA4. (My first ever TSOP!) Burned OGXBOX Installer to a disc so I could install a dash and do the other great things it can do: however it doesn't autoboot to the disc, but i can access the files on the disc from file manager. But when I select any of the .xbe's (default, ogxbox.xbe or any of the ones in its own folder) nothing happens. When I select anything other than the xbe (like txt) it works so i know its not the controller. I FTP'd the contents of the OGXBOX installer disc over to the XBOX hard drive and when I select default.xbe doing it this way (vice from a disc) it pops an error 16. Clock cap is removed but the time is shown correctly. Any ideas on what is happening in either situation? Thanks!
  21. Did you ever sell this? Lost track of it on ebay
  22. Bowl, Been following this effort on ebay. ebay states they charge a reserve fee whether or not the item sells. From their webpage: "7.5% of reserve price, whichever is greater (maximum fee $250) Charged whether or not your item sells" Have they charged you for that? That's like a minimum of $22 each time it lists, unless its a one time charge, but they don't make note of that...anyway, just wanted to make sure you were tracking that so you didn't get surprised by the fees.
  23. Bowl, you don’t have any feet on one of your other Xboxes that u could slap on there?
  24. Looks pretty awesome. Couple of recommendations to help drive views and or follow through clicks: - Have the first (title) pic be fully lit so people can recognize/identify with what it is, then have the next pic be the one in the dark with the console lit up - Have well lit pics (aka room lights on) of all of the sides, and especially so people can see the two stickers on the bottom. If someone is going to shell out that kind of cash, they'll want to know exactly what it looks like - Have a pic of the XBOX with all of the accessories/cables/controllers, and then also have a pic with all of the accessories without the console - Put more details in the description of XBOX specs (what version, DVD drive OEM, what exactly comes with it), and anything you've done (light mods, thermal paste, cap replacement, and if it comes from a pet/smoke free home. These details are generally allowed in the description from what I've seen. I don't know what you put in your original title or listing that got banned, but I searched for "original xbox XBMC" and some of the active listings that popped up, so somehow those made it through the copyright algorithm: Custom original xbox with extras https://www.ebay.com/itm/225734853857 original xbox bundle with xbmc softmod...https://www.ebay.com/itm/256193305383 128MB ram 2 TB HDD original xbox with x2.6 CE https://www.ebay.com/itm/266390381927 Lastly, I can't comment on the pricing strategy other than the fact that since you listed it with a reserve price, I'd consider lowering the starting price to attract more clicks and potential bidders...since it can't sell under the reserve price, you aren't in any danger there. Good luck!
  25. I haven't seen anything like that in years here stateside. I haven't been consistently on ebay here in the states so I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but that would be cool if they did that.
