  1. Thanks for your reply - I might have some time to recreate the drive this evening - do you mean I should check if its on 5960?  Seeing as its a 1.6 - I just assumed it would be on dash 5960 - that sounds like a good idea - am I right in saying I can update it using Halo 2 if I select online play?

Thanks again - it would be brill to get this working - last night I got two dvd drives to read disks that hadn't worked for at least 10 years - just changed the bands - gave them a good clean and they were good to go.

  2. I have a crazy xbox that I can’t mod properly- it’s a 1.6 - everything is in working order.

it’s one I found in my attic last night - my only note on it was crazy Xbox so I can’t remember what’s wrong with it.  I thought a fresh start might do it good so since it was already softmodded I used the eeprom to build a new hard drive in HDM v1.9.

I successfully made the drive - plugged it in and sure enough it was box fresh.

ithen copies over the Sid installer files and Splinter cell game save - these worked and took me to the softmodded menu.

I backed up the EEPROM and MS Dash.

When I tried single boot install - it started but suddenly the Splintercell game started to load up and duly took me back to the main menu of the game where Linux appears.

i rebooted the game and tried dual boot softmod - this time I got a batch fail message and not it has error 13 when I boot the console - not bothered as I’ll just remake the hard disk or stick the original softmodded gard disk back in.

my intention was to softmod it with SID and Splinter Celland then put the Rocky 5 softmod on it - but I never got that far - this method has worked on my other 3 consoles over the past month as I updated them all to Rocky softmod.

anyond shed any light on why the softmod stopped in Progress?  Like I said I always thought the craziness came from s poorly softmodded hard dive - that’s why I build a fresh one - but it seems to be something else.

  3. Hi - wasn't sure where to post this and thought I'd post it here seeing as you guys focus on cases.  I'm looking for the front facia part that says "xbox" and attaches to the dvd drive drawer.  I fixed a drive that I thought was unfixable with a new rubber band and a good cleaning with alcohol.  Now I'd like to find a replacement part in the UK - anyone able to point me in the right direction - can't see them on ebay or amazon.  I have an original black xbox so I need the part in black.  Thanks for any help.

XMBC4Xbox v3.5.3 is the latest release.

Rocky5 has a couple of other releases based on it - XBMC4Gamers and his latest creation XBMC-Emustation.

With his latest softmod, his loader attempts to run replacement dashboards from many different locations.  The dashboard load order is:

    C:\XBMC-Emustation\default.xbe
    E:\XBMC-Emustation\default.xbe
    F:\XBMC-Emustation\default.xbe
    C:\XBMC4Gamers\default.xbe
    E:\XBMC4Gamers\default.xbe
    F:\XBMC4Gamers\default.xbe
    C:\XBMC4Xbox\default.xbe
    E:\XBMC4Xbox\default.xbe
    F:\XBMC4Xbox\default.xbe
    C:\XBMC\default.xbe
    E:\XBMC\default.xbe
    F:\XBMC\default.xbe
    C:\dashboard\default.xbe
    E:\dashboard\default.xbe
    F:\dashboard\default.xbe
    C:\dash\default.xbe
    E:\dash\default.xbe
    F:\dash\default.xbe
    E:\default.xbe
    E:\dashboard.xbe
    C:\evoxdash.xbe
    E:\evoxdash.xbe
    C:\XBMC.xbe
    E:\XBMC.xbe

The first file found on the hard drive from this list will be the default dashboard.

Thanks - didn't get a chance to install in yet - looking at youtube vids - that XBMC emustation looks sweet as a nut - can't wait to get it up and running - do you know if its possible to have coin ops appear on it?  I have Coin Ops 8 Massive.

Hey man there’s no stupid questions around here. A lot of this stuff is either poorly documented or it’s so fragmented it’s really hard to figure out unless you just break things until you figure it out.

Better to ask a question you might feel is foolish than try to recover error 16/21 on a soft modded console or worse.

To answer your question: Rocky5 softmod will support a ton of dash locations. So technically if you look the the readme you can just install XBMC into one of the dozens of supported dash locations and then delete your original dash; it’ll scan through the supported list until it finds one to boot from.

Easy way: use the Rocky5 extras disc. Mostly foolproof and runs from HDD. You can install *most* dashes from there but I don’t know offhand if it will install vanilla XBMC. It WILL install XBMC4GAMERS or, uh. Whatever the other current one is, I forget. You can also set up dual-boot using that disc, so maybe you press power to do UnleashX and eject to boot XBMC.

Another, maybe less interesting way: UnleashX supports controller shortcuts through its settings app, so you could just hold a particular button to boot any game, app, or dash.

Thanks for your help - it really is an amazing forum - everyone is so helpful.  I'll try and load the new dash from the Rocky 5 extras disk tonight and I'll let you know how I get on.

  6. These past few weeks have been a real voyage of rediscovery as I hadn't softmodded an xbox in years and the scene has changed so much - Rocky 5 was completely new to me.  I was wondering how to go about installing XBMC on startup - which version is the best etc...  Sorry for sounding like such a noob but this is all new to me again.  I have coin ops, games and emulators like the Megadrive and Snes already installed.  Any help greatly appreciated.

I have had one of those go bad before.

Never bought one of these myself but I am using one of these too:

Really, you might also want to call up whoever runs your local computer shop and see if they’re carrying any. Tend to be much cheaper and you get the same thing quicker.

If you’re cloning in CHIMP you’ll survive without using the upgraded cable during the clone. Depending on the adapter you use and condition of your dvd drive - if you’re using one - you may get away without using one at all. It may also keep the console from booting at all.

Good call on checking out my local computer shop - they also fix computers so the guy just grabbed the nearest one to hand and gave it to me for free - now I'm just waiting for my Startech IDE to SATA.  Setting up a 500GB SATA drive has cost me next to nothing - took the drive from my old Sky + box so all in I only had to buy the Startech IDE to SATA - happy days!

    Yes.

After modifying the batch files, the Xbox hard drive can be connected to one of the PC's internal SATA ports.

Or, without any batch file modifications if you have a USB-to-hard drive adapter, as long as you have power to the hard drive and it is connected to the adapter and the adapter connected via one of the PC's USB ports that works too.

Brill - I have a usb to IDE connector so I could install the drive in the bay and connect the pc power to the drive and then just leave the case open and attach the usb to IDE cable - am I right - going to try it late.

Yes, it's the drive. The drive either doesn't like your media or the lens and mirror are dirty or laser dying. In the Thomson, there are two items that need to be cleaned.

Thanks - I'll check it out tomorrow as I've used up my download allowance for the day by downloading Quix files earlier.

make sure that the XISO image has a default.xbe file in the root folder.  There should be no subfolder. All files should appear in the root of the disc image and a default.xbe file should be present.  Use C-Xbox Tool's ISO Explore function:

    562433516_ISOExplore.JPG.a03514dbeeead2e964b2eece42fab5bb.JPG

I did this and found that it is there but there is also another file called defalt.xbe_orig - does that make any difference or is it just the fact the Thomson drive doesn't like Verbatim -R disks?  Thanks

  11. It is a Thomson Drive so I might try a different brand if I get time over the next week - right now I'm just backing up 4 of my favourite games as the disks are well worn over years of play - the good news is that I already have them backed up to my hard drive so now I can skip to step 2 above - thank you all so much for all your help on this topic - you guys are truely amazingly helpful.

    I don't think so.

    Which disk type - DVD-R or DVD+R?

Use -R instead of +R media

I just edited post above - I tried the disk on another Original Xbox and it worked perfectly - maybe it is something to do with the drive - it definitely reads retail disks as I used it to copy the game to the hard drive but maybe it can't play non retail disks.  Although it did read the Rocky 5 extras disk.  I used DVD -R burnded at 4X - do you think a different speed might help?

  13. Hi - thanks for the guide - I did this and burned it using ImgBurn on a DVD -R and the xbox doesn't recognise it - it says tray empty.  I burned it at 4X and unchecked verify disk - really disappointed as I thought I had cracked it.

    Here's what I did:

    1. DVD2XBOX - selected copy disk to hard disk - I did not select ISO mode so a folder with contents was created on the xbox hard drive.

    2. Used Filezilla to FTP the contents of the game's folder to my desktop on my PC

    3. Followed your method above using C-xbox and successfully created an ISO

    4. Opened ImgBurn - selected "Write image file to disk" - unchecked "verify" selected "4X" write speed and successfully created the disk.

    5. Placed disk in xbox turned it on and searched for the disk and then said "no disk in tray"

Did I mess up any of the steps?  I used a Verbatim - DVDR disk.

It must be something to do with the disk drive (which read the original and dumped it to the HD) as the disk I burned works in my other xbox - thanks very much guys - does anyone know if burning at a different speed to X4 might make it compatible with the drive I used to dump it to the hard drive?

  14. 1 hour ago, KaosEngineer said:

    Yes, that method will work.

For step 3, you need an XISO disc image creation application:

    • Qwix v1.0.1
    • C-Xbox Tool v2.0.6 or 2.0.7

are two of the many applications available to make the special Xbox format ISO image.  These two are Windows applications.  They can perform many operations to create an XISO, extract files from an XISO, upload and download files to/from the Xbox hard drive, etc.

Ok so I have c-xboxtool open and the game on the PC having used FTP - any idea on what I do next - finding it hard to find tutorials in English for this program?  Thanks

  15. Hi - I would like to backup some of my original disks as some are scratched - I know about dumping them to Hard Drive using dvd2xbox.  I'm just wondering how I can make physical disk copies of my games?

    Would this method work?

    1. Dump game to xbox using dvd2xbox

    2. FTP game files to PC

3 Use some kind of ISO creator - suggestions needed here

    4. Burn to disk using imgburn

    Would this method work?  Thanks

XboxHDM v1.9 requires native IDE ports on the PC, not SATA.

XboxHDM23USB Beta 2 or Beta 3's batch files can be modified to access the Xbox hard drive connected to a PC's SATA port.   Warning: Be careful to not select and format your computer's operating system drive.  The original design prevents a user from making a horrible mistake.  It requires the hard drive to be connected to the PC with a  USB-to-hard drive interface adapter be it IDE, SATA or a combination of both.

Thanks for this - could I use HDM23USB Beta 2 or 3 if I mount a second hard drive that I intend to use in the xbox inside the computer as I don't have an external usb enclosure for a 3.5 SATA drive?  Thanks
