  1. I opened an xbox that I picked up at the weekend last night.  There was a problem with the disk drive as it kept opening an closing and wouldn't read a disk when it was held closed while the disk was spinning.  I suspected a faulty drive but when I opened it I found that it was absolutely filthy inside and that something had leaked - I have attached pics - I think it's a 1.6 so I don't know what is leaking or if it is repairable - any help greatly appreciated.  Thanks

i've got a 1.6 crystal that i clone the HDD from and made 4 copies and they all work in the original xbox.  the key is null and i've nulled 2 other xboxes but i get error 13 or 14 when i put the hdd into the new systems.  both are version 1.6.  what have i done wrong?  hope someone can help me out with this.

Very interested in this - I haven't done anything yet but I am afraid that his might happen.

  3. A friend of mine setup my softmodded xbox hard drive with emulators, games etc and a cool dashboard - I'm just wondering how to clone the drive in order to use it in my spare xbox - I can unlock the drive in HDM V1.9 and there seems to be an option to clone a hard drive in HMD V1.9 as well - anyone tried this or is there another way without TSOP or chipped console?  Thanks

Just use chimp  as you would but the opposite way around. Are you soft or hard modded? If hard modded you can just build the drive using hexen and ftp across the files if you have them backed up on your pc. Hdm V1.9 should also work

    Softmodded - would this work?

    1. Backup SATA drive to PC

    2. Create a fresh 500gb IDE drive using old PC and HDM V.1

    3. Softmod Freh IDE drive using ROCKY 5

    4. FTP files that I backed up from PC to new drive

Will it know to start in the xbmc 4 gamers dashboard as that’s the way the current SATA drive boots up?

  5. Hi - I have a 500GB SATA drive upgrade complete with Startech SATA to IDE connector and 80 pin IDE cable.  However, I still feel my 400 GB IDE xbox loads coin ops games quicker.  I bought a new old stock 500GB IDE drive and now I want to clone my SATA drive to my IDE Drive.  Is this possible?  I could use Chimp or could I use HDM V1.9?  I would Prefer to use HDM V1.9 but I'm not sure it would recognise a SATA drive even if it is connected using a Startech SATA to IDE - anyone shed any light on this?  Thanks

Flip it end-over-end.  the two close together connectors are to the motherboard and DVD drive and the one that is further apart going to the hard drive.

How long is the cable?  I

f it's the standard 18" PC length, it may be long enough but will be a very tight fit with many twists and folders.  A 24" long cable works well to fit into the Xbox.

The Xbox doesn't use PC standard dimensions for its IDE cable.  And, one connector sticks out on the opposite side.

It's long but the cable is designed to have two hard drives  on top of each other connected to a pc  motherboard so no matter what I do the two close together IDE connectors won't connect to both the dvd drive and the motherboard at the same time.

Damn, nice work! I generally find the IDE drives to be unpredictable to the point of uselessness these days. Got a nigh-20 year old desk star powering one of my PS2s but that’s more out of laziness than anything.

It was my treatment of the drives that caused it - We moved to our new house 4 years ago and they were put up in the attic - the usual - freezing in Winter and boiling in summer.  I must have put them up there by accident because I didn't even realise they were up there.  I found a 300GB, 250GB, 160GB and 500GB (all IDE) in the attic a few weeks ago.  My notes say I tested them before I moved house and they were all working perfectly.  However, only the 300GB Maxtor and 250GB survived.  Funny, you should mention PS2 - I picked up a SATA Hard Drive connector for my Phat PS2 when I was buying my Startech IDE to SATA connector for my XBOX.  I was just trying out a 500GB SATA drive that I pulled from my old SKY Plus Box.  Even with the Startech IDE to SATA I find it much slower than the IDE drives when loading games from Coin OPS.  Not that it matters - I still play C64 games so it's still lightening quick by comparison.  I think SATA is the way forward for me in the long run - just annoyed with myself for not leaving the drives in our spare room along with all my other Consoles.

Assembler games thread I copied describing the error:

Dashboard failed to launch due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.

I would try to rebuild it. What are you using to source your C:/ and E:/ files for xboxhdm? I’ve not used 1.9. Did they come included as they do with xboxhdm23?

Since this is a dashboard error you might also find some success booting a rescue disc like Rocky5 extras, AID, or HeXen.

I know that the files are fine as I built another hard drive for the same xbox this morning and it works perfectly.  I'm scanning the physical drive for errors now using HDAT2 and it already found an uncorrectable data error - that along with searching on google has led me to believe that the 500GB is dying.  During my research I learned that the xbox might not load the drive if there are bad sectors on the disk - looks like the drive needs to be chucked in the bin.

When you run Chimp, what's the status of the slave hard drive?

Depending on how its unlock operation worked.  It either unlocked the drive until the next power cycle or permanently removed the password so it's still unlocked - no need to unlock it again.

I've sorted it now - see my last post but when I used Chimp it kept saying the Slave Drive was locked and I could not unlock it again.  It unlocked the very first time I tried it - I know this for sure because I took a picture on my phone - however it must have locked the second I powered the xbox off.   I tried countless times after that but I failed to unlock it.  Thankfully the HDAT2 program worked and the guide was really easy to follow.  Thanks again for all your help.

Here’s a tutorial on how to use HDAT2 which might be able to unlock the drive.

Gave up on DBAN - Quick Erase at 00.04% after 15 minutes.  Decided to follow the guide you linked above on HDAT2 - used the XBOXSCENE password and it worked!  Thanks so much - I never ever heard of that program before - it's amazing and the guide was excellent.  Thanks again!

Soz, should have recalled the title of your original post.  Darik’s Boot and Nuke is the software that should hopefully be able to reformat the drive.

There where a couple of articles on xbox scene regarding your issue, if you do a bit of surfing on the net you maybe able to find them.

Tried Darik's Boot and Nuke - selected Quick Erase - it correctly identified the drive but after 4 mins it has an estimated 238 hours left I’ll give it an hour and see where it’s at
