  1. Just wondering the link thats on one of them, could be akin to the switch on Most decent PC PSUs.  120v one way 240 the other.

Thinking  of the heritage of the OG Xbox, its essentially a highly modded PC so goes to high possibility that Delta or whom ever built the first PSU’s probably raided the PC parts bin.

The PSU does little more than your standard PC’ PSU the only real difference is the latching voltage for the standby PON.

I haven't looked yet, but is there anywhere in these guides that mentions placing the battery socket maybe on the underside of the console so you don't have to open it every time? A molex connector would make this easy if the mobo needs to be removed for any reason. ;)

I mentioned it in my guide but never went further than that.  Reason being the batteries last a year, and at the time none of my OGs stayed shut for that long.
Theres no reason way that wouldnt work.  A micro molex connector is all that would be needed. This would make it very discrete.

  3. I use CR2032 cells you need to disable the Xbox’s ability to charge the capacitor that would normally be there other wise bad things happen.

I had cheap pound store CR2032 batteries that lasted 6 plus months where the Xbox never saw mains electricity.

the decent cells can last a year and can be hot swapped when the unit is turned on.

I will pull the guide and get it posted up here to be useful.

  4. Maybe its about time I dusted off my old guide that was on Xbox scene showing the removal process and replacement with coin cell battery for those that wanted the time to stay more permanently.  Coin cells last about a year.

Probably needs an edit for the 1.6’s as back then they didnt leak.

You missed the best days with c64 and Amiga. BABY!

Still got all mine and very active in that community.

The things you can do now with modern Chinese PCB fab and inexpensive EDA. My 1980/90’s self would have some kind of seizure, so many things back then were only for very very deep pockets or straight up StarTrek, now easily done.

The OGXbox is in that zone too, but just getting started on its journey.

  6. Im sure I have/had a dash mod disc that had an option to restore a retail harddrive. I did back in the day royally f one of mine up pulling the power cord while it was modding.
So restoring to retail is possible, without opening the unit, via one of the exploits, like Splinter cell  or Mechwarrior. The question is in this day and age why bother. Just have the retail dash XBE there to use if you want/need it

  7. eBay seriously need a decent competitor to stomp them down a bit.  Between the cut they take and owning PayPal and taking cuts there also. Then making it darn near imposible to not use PayPal.  And then always siding with the purchaser, when they say my item didnt arrive, boo hoo.  When the courier has a picture of them taking the package at their door, apparently that not proof enough. Refund issued and no item. Would have been cheaper to just throw the item in the trash.

IMO I think if you use the word. “Rare” or “vintage” then eBay should take 26.5% commision.

Most thing listed as rare or vintage are about as vintage as the latest iPhone.

  8. I had someone file a dispute because I would not send the item after they paid for it.   This is despite it saying in the description in large font no delivery due to size.

eBay obviously read it and refused to refund the guy until they spoke to me.

After I spoke to them they removed his negative feedback refunded his money and I sold the item to another buyer for the same money and helped them set up a courier collection because they asked nicely, a few day later.

  9. Yes back in the day I used to fit fans to 1.1 upward just because it helps with temps etc. you are correct the 1.6 does not have them, mainly because MS pretty much redesigned the whole board for the 1.6.   Think of them as the essential parts placed where they have to go due to design and the best bits of the v1 onwards added to new tech that would have continued to a 1.7 if there had ever been one.

Like the winglets on planes. Theoretical aerodynamics. Cool.

Yes such a simple thing and yet makes a noticeable improvement on fuel economy.

Kind of makes you wonder why nobody thought of it years prior to when Boing and AirBus started to use them.

I honestly didn't know what part of the fans you were talking about. The housings, the blades.

But yes, that does make sense.

Theres quite a lot about blade design on YouTube, various things are being experimented with like dimples or odd shaped blades.  Waves and other seemingly wacky ideas that some seem to actually have some merit.

Even M.I.T got involved a while back.
