The hard drive and DVD drive have to be connected.  If not, the console will FRAG since a major system component is not found by the BIOS when it looks for it.

Sorry, I wasn’t very clear. By reconnect I meant disconnect and connect again. When the Xbox was having issues on first boot after being cleaned, both the DVD and HDD where connected.

  2. I gave the underside of the clock cap and the traces around the area a good clean with a tooth brush and isopropyl.

At first, it still turned on immediately, but this time it was worse; restarting itself continually while flashing red and green on the power light and no AV output.

I thought I completely broke it.

Reconnected the HDD and DVD drives.

Now it seems perfect with no more auto power ons/offs.

I'm guessing the initial problems were due to isopropyl not being completely dry on the mobo somewhere.

I have created an imgur.com tutorial album:

Note: Not all images have their instructional description at this time.

Edit: I've added comments to all images.  Feedback on their clarity appreciated.

    Thanks so much for this.

This post from you in 2018 mentions DVD sector sizes. Does this guide take this into account?

XISO Split is a great tool & works great for the most part, But doesn't work with games that have special characters in its title within its default.xbe. I struggled for hours with Conker: Live and Reloaded, It would create 1 empty file named Conker (No extension) & say it completed. I then realised it had a colon : in its title within the default.xbe. Im not aware of any simple/straight forward apps/tools that can rename a title within a default.xbe, But was able to do so with Qwix101. When you FTP a XISO to your XBOX with Qwix101,  It has a option to rename the title within its .xbe. I used that to remove the colon & FTP'd to the console (It doesnt let you save the edit unless you FTP it over), Then FTP'd back to PC, Created a new iso & XISO Split successfully split the iso in 2. Bit of a nightmare, But got the job done...

@Rocky5Looks like this was never fixed?

Just tested TOCA 3 and the profile loads fine, but the Xbox halts on a black screen when selecting World Tour mode.
I don't understand why the Xbox community never adopted on the fly patching, like Swiss on the Gamecube for example. BTW is dvd2xbox the only tool that correclty patches all games?

Toca 1 is fine, Toca 2 has long file names but not sure if it effects the game. Toca 3 will black screen after loading the profile. (Never gets to the menu)

Just want to point out that TOCA 3 works perfectly without any patching if you use DD to extract the game data partition and load the untouched XISO.

  6. Been trying to get my head around the best way to install games. I think I got it sorted, could I get some feedback please?

    Start with ReDump style ISOs.

Next step depends if there's anti-piracy protection (determined by going through the DVD2Xbox ACL files, eg. ACL for TOCA 3)

If there's protection, just remove the video partition and leave the game partition untouched.

        dd if=redump.iso of=game_data.iso skip=387k bs=1k

Otherwise, use extract-xiso (which now has ReDump support) to convert it into a compatible XISO and shrink the size.

        extract-xiso.exe -r "redump.iso"

If the resulting ISO is > 4gb, use XISO Split to split into smaller files.

FTP the ISO file to F/G:\\Games

Run the "XISO to HDD Installer" script in xbmc4gamer

    Thanks everyone.
