  1. https://www.retrorgb.com/og-xbox-storage-upgrade-shootout.html this comparison shows that some games show seconds of improvement over a fast HDD while others have limited improvement. Now this was tested with UDMA2, UDMA5 will further favor SSD. If you need a lot of storage then indeed HDD is a lot cheaper, but I think that for most people 1-2TB will be large enough. I have 150 games on my XBOX and only used 50% or so, so a 1TB SSD is what I went for. Added bonus is that my xbox is now super quiet. I’m happy!
  2. find a 2nd hand 1.4 from marktplaats. Will definitely be cheaper then the shipping costs from US
  3. maybe good to double check if the jumpers are correct, so master - slave. And does the game boot from disc if you turn on XBOX with disc in it? It can show if it is maybe a dashboard issue. Could also be a region thing. Check if your XBOX region matches that of the discs. You can switch it with Enigmah
  4. It wasn't sarcasm this time . I know dicharging can be done, but you have to do it correctly otherwise it is really dangerous that's all. Not sure how big the risk is of cracking the tube as I have no experience repairing CRTs
  5. I would be more afraid of the high currents you can experience on CRTs if not properly discharged
  6. @PRince404 can’t Look in your wallet obviously, but if you’re worried about space then get a bigger HDD. 1tb costs 30 euro, hell an ssd isn’t that much more expensive at 39 euro. Add 80wire cable and startech adapter and you are all set for about €60. 1TB can fit almost all games in CCI format.
  7. @Bowlsnapper sorry just yanking your chain
  8. @Bowlsnapper if you hadn’t flooded the stellar topic with your bitching about asshat Dustin, you would have seen this feature was released 6 weeks ago in the 1.10 release
  9. @logandzwon go back an check your soldering first, you can post pictures of your soldering to get some tips. If you have a multimeter you can check which cap is not soldered on correctly.
  10. hmm interesting comment under the video
  11. scanlines are nice for 240p sprite based games. They don't improve your picture quality in most 3D games in my view, especially since they apply 240P scanlines you actually start to loose details in your games and the picture becomes darker. I think it comes mainly down to taste. The trick with 240p was that it would not skip every other line on a CRT. 480i does first pass even lines, 2nd pas uneven lines. By skipping a line you get the scan lines. They had to render less pixels also in this way. Because of this limitations they actually designed the models in such a way that it could trick your brain in thinking there was more detail then there actually was. I'm always surprised when I turn it on when playing on my sega that it literally takes a minute before I don't even see it anymore. Filters I haven't played around with, I hear the smoothing filter does wonders on N64. But what I could find is that it only works with 480p only. Maybe should look into it when playing GTA SA. 720P looks just gorgeous. I actually enjoy the low polygon look.
  12. @starbreaker XBOX HD+ will look better since it is digital to digital and not digital to analogue to digital. Also component, while great, uses sync on green so you loose a bit of signal fidelity. Last thing, which I only found out recently as retrotink 5x owner, if your input resolution is above 480p the retrotink will switch to 4:2:2 input vs 4:4:4. Now this is all theoretically, reality is that I don't you will ever notice during gaming. Retrorgb has made some comparisons for the ogXBOX, but for me the differences are small
  13. @COO-589Stellar is in full on beta phase, a lot of features are being added and still a lot of features still need to be rolled out. So wait another 9 months...
  14. https://makemhz.com/blogs/news/project-stellar-firmware-update-1-1-2 missed the message but now also LBA48v2 is also supported. This is the version that was enabled with the titan patch.
  15. Legacy partioning was the original LBA48 implementation. This meant that block sizes of data could be expanded and thus larger disk sizes were possible. The original xbox LBA didn’t allow larger disc sizes then 137 GB. The LBA48, which wasn’t full LBA48, enabled disk sizes till 2TB (max partition size of 1 TB). Cerbios partioning enbled disk size till 16 TB and max partition size of 2 TB. Not sure why it’s not working, maybe enabling it on stellar is more work and couldn’t be delivered in time for the 1.10 release. Or maybe he will never deliver.
  16. @Bowlsnapper going for a 1 CRT to rule them all solution is more practically driven. I could buy multiple, I have the storage space if needed. But I don’t want to haul around CRT’s all the time depending on the console I want to play. I already have a solution that works awesome, but it’s just a tad under crt quality. Also not to mention the fact that I don’t want to play my sega megadrive @pal speed when used to ntsc. I might just pick up a pvm, it suits the need for 240p gaming and it might look good enough for the good old xbox
  17. I was looking at a Dell ultrascan 1600HS the other day. It has RGB input. But after looking at the specs I realized it is not the one stop shop solution for my retro gaming stuff. It goes to 1600x1200, but doesn't go below 1024x768. So a no go for my Sega MD. Today I also started to look at a PVM again, there is a nice sony up for sale on the other side of the country :D. But with to many unfinished projects lying around I don't want to take yet another a long. Not to mention that the boss would probably start to complain I picked up another peace of junk I have the feeling that CRT also looks much better than modern screens is because the screens are just much smaller. Details smooth out given you the feeling there is more detail then in reality. And yes scanlines help, but tbh my retrothink has killer scanlines
  18. @Bowlsnapper sync is a different beast. Was looking into it a bit as I started to consider buying a computer monitor that has RGBHV bnc as input option. At least it has the connections, off course spec sheets of the 20 year old monitor ar nowhere near to be found, so it might just support component directly. First try to figure out what input the monitor accepts: YPrPb, RGsB, RGBs, RGBHV, s-video. Some of the PVM offer expansion slots, so maybe it’s easier to find the right card for it to use component. Other option could be to go VGA route since XBOX does support it with the right bios. VGA should be the same as RGBHV from what I understand only difference is the connector. Anyway I’m glad I bought myself a retrotink5x, looking on how it’s not so straightforward to connect stuff to CRT that isn’t composite :D. At least in Europe component and HD-CRT wasn’t a thing. I would reconsider if I could my hands on this beast. Luckily I still have both kidneys, so I can miss 1 to fund it
  19. I can only quote the changelog, haven’t tested it myself yet: https://makemhz.com/blogs/news/project-stellar-firmware-1-1-0 but I plan to install it to my 1.4 Ghz xboz in the coming weeks.
  20. It also added kernel support for CPU upgraded xbox. It means no more game patching. That’s a very cool feature and one I’m really happy with.
  21. It should be dustin’s version of CCI. So not the same as cerbios. There was a discussion on this 6 months ago or so. It would be great if he could implement the cerbios CCI (or cerbios would support Dustin’s version). Somehow I get the feeling that this will never happen. Good to see he is churning out the promised features. I guess I should start installing my stellar chip now
  22. 22 have to start making a few extra partition then
  23. It all depends on the bottleneck whether faster storage leads to faster load times. Not all games are limited by the storage With respect to ram the story is pretty simple, all standard xbox games are designed to use only 64 mb RAM. They will not use more RAM if you add more RAM. That’s why the added benefit is only limited too homebrew and emulators. Now for the cpu the story is a bit more complicated. Some games have tied the game speed to the cpu clock speed, as this is always the same for every console. So when you double the cpu speed you basically run the games at twice the speed. So we unlike pc gaming faster HW doesn’t make games run better. Most games you only need to patch the XBE, others you have to downclock the processor to get them to work. It’s advised to switch your xbox to NTSC. 480p and especially 720p games look stunning compared to the PAL output. XBOX I think supports PAL60 out of the box, it’s definitely available in the other dashes. Whether PAL games run on NTSC depends on the game. To my knowledge they do not run faster like on the 8 and 16 bit era consoles. Games either work on on the correct speed or they just don’t. I think most games you can fix in the xbe. I just downloaded usa games only, when I need to run PAL games I just switch the console to PAL.
  24. there isn't a nice overview because it is also game dependent. Especially games that load a lot of small files will benefit from SSD. Then the UDMA factor are also mixed reports. Some commented that on HDD they didn't notice a difference, but this can be because the HDD was the limiting factor. I noticed at least in mafia that the load time dropped from 8 secs to 4 secs with UDMA5. This is also a nice test with Half life 2: https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/u6hjfv/half_life_2_xbox_load_time_comparison_ssd_hdd_oc/ BTW this 1.4 GHz upgrade requires professional hardware to pull off, you need at least a BGA rework station to pull it off. You also need to get your hands on the right processor and then still you need to mod a lot of games just to get them running. It is definitely one of the cooler mods, just simply because it is possible to do this on the XBOX. I was lucky that I could get my hands on one, but that project is sort of waiting also on Stellar HD install (new HDMI mod plus modchip)
  25. @MasterChief if you want to build the ultimo Xbox you would want to also go for a 1.4 ghz model joking a side, you can consider going for the SSD route. You can fit the entire xbox library on a 2 TB drive. If you remove the crappy games you can easily get away wit a 1 TB drive. I think I have like 150 games on my SSD and still have space left for 100-150 games. If you pair this with a startech ide2sata adapter and UDMA5 bios then you get a nice boost in load times. Added benefit is that you reduce the noise. You csn replace the standard fan with a 80mm noctua fan to get a very quiet XBOX. There is also a fan available on smazon that drops in without modifications, but that becomes a bit expensive if I have to ship it to Europe. So no experience with that fan here. The internal HDMI does offer the best picture quality, but I don’t think you can spot the difference over a Chimeric cable. I would skip the pound (or similar) cables as they add unstable inputlag of 1-2 frames. Not noticeable in all games, but it makes the system feel less snappy. It’s not bad, especially for the price, but other options are just better. Anyway you can go nuts with modding your XBOX, but there is nothing wrong with picking one up together with a free crt an play some games
