For folks that have done this mod, are the advantages you gain from adding RAM worth the effort involved? Where do you really notice the difference in playing a game for example. Is it like night and day or just a little bit faster?

Kynar wire, a $100 soldering station from china that has a heatgun and temperature controlled soldering iron with various tips. A couple of spring loaded vacuum solder suckers. (These things are great!) A magnifying lens so I can see better for close up work.
