So just soldering a mod chip will allow me to switch out the hard drive?

    This link for rocky5 softmod

Looks like this link has some good info on the jewel.

easiest to just clear it. painting is always trickier because paint is chemistry and every good painter will insist that "rattle cans suck" any backyard expert like myself knows good results can still be achieved. but clear on your ghost case would look pretty cool.

I've used this info in conjunction with other info to make a diy component cable that works very well, otherwise buy the chinese one on ebay and its actually ok. lacking quality shielding that disrupts the clarity.

As far as the TSOP mod and selecting a bios. there really isnt much to say from my perspective. i have ind-bios on mine, works great.
start with softmod and move to tsop as your hobby hours open up to accomodate it. always more fun doing the tsop.

thats all i can say tho. otherwise like incursion said, have some fun, do the homework. surf and dig. you can find loads and loads of info out here.

  3. if you take your time sanding with a flat block you should get good results. start at 180 or 220. 80 may be too heavy

i havent paint an xbox before. but ive been using rustoleum appliance epoxy on other projects and that stuff is awesome.

painted a motorcycle fuel tank with it, took my time, sanded between coats and let it cure for a full week before recoat as recommended on that can. its hard like epoxy (think fridge, washer, dryer) and it stands up to gasoline! which is not common of regulated VOC products in canada...

just moved into a place where the dryer left behind had a ton of damage on top. quick sand, degrease, cleaned it all up and shot in the white rattle can. looks great, really durable.

now thinking i may use the rest of this rattle can on my slim box.... hmmmmm. do i kill another weekend on an xbox...... hmmmmmm

  4. i had one that was really totaled and didnt want to go through with painting. so i sanded with a block from 80 grit stepping up to 220, 400, 1000, 2000. 1000 and 2000 were wet sand and then used polishing compound. it came out HIGH gloss. looked really good.

  5. Follow the above, rocky 5's softmod tool is hands down the best. least bloated simplest kit you can use IMO

All you need to know will be associated with Rocky5's softmod.

once you have that done there are many different ways to set up what you want.

but i would start with that.... if this is your first time softmodding an XBOX i am very happy for you. be patient, take your time.

honestly. id plan on opening that xbox and installing a bigger hard drive right out of the gate, you may want to order a startech ide2sat like right now.

there is a chapter in this book about identifying your revision which i find very helpful.
it has been my road map seeking out earlier revision hardware, you cant go wrong if you want the earlier stuff buying a 2002.. lol. but it gets challenging to identify between 1.5 1.6 1.6b based on date IMO

regarding the method of softmod, i've found the game save exploit to be very straight forward and fool proof.

its all in the preparation. and once you have the usb set-up plan to dedicate that stick to this. if you ever need to fall back on it. there it is.

look to secure a usb thumb drive of less than 4GB (i found that a challlenge!! ended up ordering overpriced 256mb stick on ebay)

I just ended up making some of my own, since I can't find any good ones.

I am trying to figure out if I can somehow how a custom background for each category.19a20c3318fd2a75ebf3ec041c8d74bd.jpg

put your emulators in the emulator folder, then add fanart to each emulator. you still wont have the big pretty pictures on this screen but you would one folder deeper... i see what you're going for here. i like it. just a suggestion..

  7. there is a playlist function, cant remember the details.
but ive defnitley had music playing on boot.
can you have a playlist for every category? i doubt it.
i believe the background on categories is static, just a color. that was my experience...

thanks, I saw those but i was more interested in creating my own cuz i dont really like those

after some more research i found out that the .x file extension is for DirectX files but microsoft killed that extension some years ago making info creating them very vague, i did however find this on microsoft site on saving to a .x files using direct3d 9 (the sdk i believe), but again info provided is pretty vague to me, guess i gotta go learn to code directX before i attempt anything

did you look in rocky5's post from that X4X thread? he has a few other things on second page in with his intro .X files. there is some information in there about doing it

I'll get on that then. I just figured possibly replace because things like letting the clock be wrong bugs me way more than it should and it wont have a permanent plugged in home for some time (in small apartment looking for a house). It hasn't leaked yet as far as I can tell. I made sure it turned on then immediately ripped it open and checked all the caps for leaks/bulges/pops/smell. It's a 1.4 and seemed hardly ever used. I got it from an estate sale so I'm assuming it was at some grandparents for when the grand kids were there. Even had a copy of Mercenaries in it.

xbmc leverages the internet for time (you have to tell it to tho). its common to see XBMC as dashboard. its been my peace of mind when my mind is disturbed by the details.... who wouldnt want accurate time. you are justified in your thinking. i'd rather have no clock than the wrong clock.

Hello,I just cant find skins like animatrix anywhere!

    Sorry Eric, i've lost you.

XVGM is a skin for unleashX that leverages videos to give the apperance of a much fuller GUI experience.

Its an incredibly ambitious piece of work once you breakdown what its taken to get it to this point.

Thanks, LEDs are cheap figured id give it a shot.

Yeah EQ takes alot, I don't even want to see my characters online time because its probably close to 2 years.

I didn't realize that. I just grabbed it from another system as the Thompson that was in it was being problematic.

I have already realized the flashed bios importance, I started with just a softmod and dealing with locking/unlocking of the drive was annoying let alone worrying about issues if the drive failed. I have not done the clock cap yet because I think i want to replace it rather than remove, I just haven't researched enough to be sure.

i didnt realize those drives were uncommon either. i have one in a V1.0 that had a "refurbished" sticker and an X2 chip in it. nicest unit ive acquired. best dvd drive of the lot of the ones i own.

  13. nice LED mods man. i always wanted to be a part of everquest, but at the time was just too busy and theres no way im starting now.... lol. the xbox is alot of fun. even if you dont play the games. a ton of resources out there, alot of it is dated and fragmented. but sites like these are finding ways to string it back together.

  14. when they come direct from china they are just in bags and not in HDE packaging they are clean and looking much better than these. just saying. the ones coming direct from the source are much better. identical board layout to these tho, so they may be the same bad caps. i dont know. i have 2 and they have shown no problems.
HDE treated me like an idiot on request for refund, they generally sell crap anyways, but i learned that the hard way.

my theory is HDE ordered a ton of these things aeons ago and has just been sitting on them. so i'd assume all these green boards with those caps are ticking time bombs.... assume is key word.

you have to wait for the chinese ones but if you are severely restricted to budget i can recommend and confirm they are alot better.

    otherwise just buy startech.
