if i bought a xbox that someone had softmodded and then unlocked the hdd and forgot to re-lock it before powering down, what error code would it give?

If it is unlocked try using fatxplorer and see if they did a backup of the eeprom/hdd key, if so you could use xboxhdm to lock it or use another chipped Xbox to check the files by booting to an install disk and using file explorer.

I have a v1.0 and an OpenXenium chip and unfortunately XBlast bios is incompatible with both

It’s not you just needed to set it up before you started the ram upgrade. Do you have access to another Xbox?  You need to setup you xenium as Dave suggest, Xblast can then tell you if the extra chips have been installed okay.

I tried to upgrade my V1.0 Xbox with 4 Samsung version F RAM chips but it won’t boot. I’ve got an OpenXenium mod chip installed but I’ve tried booting both with and without yet it still flashes. Anyone know what this means/ anyway to fix it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you use Xblast bios to check each chip as you installed it?

Hey, I apologize and didn't mean any offense. I was just trying to inquire if I was having an issue like you as well. I completely agree that those temps are way high on your 1.4 and even the temps on mine seem to be on the road to yours. Yet, curious if anyone else had similar temps and I really wasn't sure what the acceptable range of temps should be about. It was more of a question to the community, I should have clarified.

The Xbox should cut out at approx 72c to protect the components, if it is doing this I would change the thermal paste and maybe think of running the box at a higher fan speed, it will just be a bit nosier.

Hello all, just wanted to say this site is amazing. I am just getting into modding consoles and everything I searched led me here so here I am lol.

My first mod will be the open xenium chip which, I am awaiting delivery, and replacing failing capacitors on a Halo edition green 1.6 xbox. I have been tinkering and fixing things all my life and had heard of modding consoles, I have just never really tried to do any of it. After deciding to breath new life into my wife's childhood console, the more I dug the more I found you could do to this thing. She doesn't really like modern gaming titles so I want to load this thig up with emulators so she can enjoy gaming as much as I do. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to give advice I will definitely welcome it all. Also if someone could point me in the direction of the site rules and specified posts needed for using all features of the site that would be great.

Thank you for the wealth of knowledge, I hope to become a regular here.

Hiya, if you are thinking of turning your Xbox in to an emulator, emustation is a really nice front end dash, it is a sister/brother to xbmc4gamers.

Hi all, I have an issue with my XBOX that doesn't power on anymore.

    Model: 1.2
    TSOP: Yes, iND-2003
Mods: None other than removal of the clock capacitor
Misc: Using the Chimeric Systems HDMI adapter (which is awesome)

Yesterday I received a new modchip from eBay, the Xenium Gold with the 24K OS on it.  I swapped out my old Aladdin chip and fired it up with no issues.  I proceeded to add EvoxM8+, iND-2004, and XBlast on it.  I tested all 3 BIOS and they all worked fine.  From here I decided to do the 128mb RAM upgrade.  I've successfully performed this upgrade once before.  I'm using the same RAM that I purchased from eBay over a year ago that worked on my previous install on my other 1.3 XBOX: SAMSUNG 525 K4D263238F-QC50

I proceeded to solder in all the chips, but when I went to turn on the XBOX nothing happened.  No light, no response, nothing.  I don't ever recall hearing a pop or a snap.  I double checked that I connected everything.

    Troubleshooting:
    - I thought it might be the PSU so I swapped in the working PSU from the 1.3 XBOX that I successfully did the RAM upgrade on and the same results.
    - The only thing I noticed was that when I pressed eject or power on either PSU, the Xenium chip LED lit up.  If I held either button the LED just flashed.  Other than that, no activity from the board whatsoever
    - One thing I noticed is that I soldered the final chip in backwards (chip 4 according to the XBlast diagram, the one closest to the ATX plug).  I should have taken a break after 2 chips due to fatigue but I pushed through and I guess I wasn't paying attention.  I used my hot rework station to pull the chip off and turn it around.  Same results.
    - After this I decided to just pull the other 3 chips off to troubleshoot it from scratch, but no joy.
    - The repairs for power buttons I've seen after searching are mostly just the trace repairs on the 1.0/1.1.  I'm not great at troubleshooting so I wouldn't know where to begin without a guide on the 1.2 XBOX.

Did I fry the board somehow?  Did putting the RAM in backwards just kill it?  Did I ESD shock it?   Did I get the iron next to something that I shouldn't have for too long and didn't notice?  Here's some pics I uploaded to imgur since they're too big.  I can take more photos or better photos of certain things if needed.   Thanks in advance.

As SDD says check the pads for a short, I did a ram upgrade and it would turn on until I removed a solder bridge.

Okay just giving an update if anyone comes across this looking for answers.

Unfortunately the Aladdin clone I have simply does not work with the xblast or non-xblast code. I bought a lattice clone JTAG programmer and flashed the cpld. After many failed attempts at flashing the SST via hotswap I went out and bought a lpc programmer with the plcc32 adaptor. After successfully programming the .bin and trying to boot I was met with nothing but frags. Ive tried everything and still it just doesn't work. I guess either I messaged up somewhere(very possible) or the clone Aladdin was made differently than before(doubtful but still possible).

I would try and pm psyko over on this site and see if he can help. https://www.obscuregamers.com/threads/mod-aladdin-xblast.505/

    Hi Dave

I'm not 100% sure, mightve been useful! I'll check in the morning..

If you want to stick with the softmod you just need to use xboxhdm and a copy of your eeprom/hdd key to lock your drive. Here's a video that show using xboxhdm to build a drive but you would just need to lock yours with your hdd key.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_n8kEQfgdE&t=280s

You could always back up the game drive to your pc using fatxplorer before you try anything.

    Hi all

    Wonder if you can help.

I have a soft modded xbox with stock 8gb hdd, I have another hdd that's preloaded with tons of games that I want to install but not sure how to go about it. I have all the cables necessary and I have chimp installed on the original hdd. Can I turn the preloaded hdd into the master without formatting it and losing everything? Any help greatly appreciated.

When you say you have a hdd with a load of games on is it formatted with fatx for the Xbox or ntfs for a pc which you plan to transfer to the Xbox?

    Just for clarification:

I have a PAL Xbox, it is set to PAL (I have verified this in UnleashX but the settings of the MS dashboard seems to say the same thing as I have no option to enable the high resolution modes) and all of my retail games are also PAL.

I turn the Xbox on with the "Eject" button so the modchip is disabled. The normal boot animation plays (NO evoX logo) and I am greeted by the MS dashboard.

I put in the retail disc of "Fable" and it plays without any problems. It is a PAL game. I put in the retail disc of "Dead or Alive 3"  and it gives me the "Invalid game region" message. Both games are PAL yet one of them plays and the other gives me this error message. I have tested a bunch of other PAL games (none of them were backups!) and only a small portion of them does not give me this mysterious error message.

I wanted to take this one step further so I have changed the region (with UnleashX) from "PAL" to "NTSC M" just for curiosity. (I hope this is the same thing that enigmah does) I started the Xbox with the modchip disabled but it has reseted back to "PAL".

I have read a little more about this modchip and the BIOS is listed as 2 x 512KB (512KB for each bank I guess). I was thinking whether the 256K BIOS I have flashed to it is the problem...but on the other hand, the same black screen issue happens with the modchip disabled so I am out of ideas right now.

With the modchip disabled, does the Xbox run with a retail BIOS?

Use enigmah in your apps folder, hexen should have put a copy there if not use hexen to install it. Once you have set that to ntsc, reboot and load the m$ dash via unleashx, navigate to video and make sure you have the option to use 480 and 720.

  11. The duo as Dave mentioned in an earlier post comes with 1 bank a 1.6 and 1 for the rest when sold so the other bank has not been reflashed that is why it frags. If you have a pal box set to pal it should run your pal disks, try changing the video from ntsc to pal with enigmah. Are you using unleashx as your mod dash?

    It's not the DVD drive!!!

I have swapped the DVD drive with the other (Samsung) drive I got and the very same thing happens. I have tried a few games and what was working with the previous drive still works but what was not working is not working with this either.

I have put the drive of this Xbox into my main Xbox just to be sure and it works there without any problems. In fact I will just leave it there because it does not have any problems.

This I guess leaves us with two options: It is either something in the motherboard or the modchip itself. Not sure if it is a hardware or a software problem though but I would bet on software.

I have also checked what BIOS I have and it is "Evox M8+ v1.6 137 HeXeN". It is a 256k BIOS I have flashed with the Hexen disc.

I forgot to check the second bank of the chip though :(

It’s going to be a software problem, is your other Xbox a hardmod, if so make sure that both the hdds are unlocked and swap them, that will tell you if it is a software issue.

you could then just clone your c an e partition from the working hdd.

Found the PROBLEM!!!!   It was actually flashing red and orange.... RAM ERROR.   So I inspected the ram and found a glob of solder on the side of the pins on the ram!!!!!  Must have fallen off the iron somehow......    Anyway, I have sunk enough hours into this xbox lol.   Anyone selling a pre 1.6 mobo????  Thanks!!!

(you can actually see the glob of solder in the pc on the side of the ram chip!)

Just use some solder braid and plenty of flux to remove it.

So I finally had some time to work on the chips. I did what you had suggested and I managed to fix the one chip that was only partially flashing and now I have 1 fully working OpenXenium chip. The rest though didnt seem to follow. Since I had a hot air station, I spent a good amount of time removing the chips, re-tinning the pads and cleaning the old flux up and trying to re-solder them . I then followed with two passes of solder braid, one thick and one thinner to try and get the little stuff. Unfortunately only the CPLD was still being programmed and the xbox just wouldn't recognize the chips. Im just at a loss since the LED can change color and will match the color listed in the Xenium tools meaning at least the LPC writes to the chip are working. Im thinking of using a 3.3v Micro controller board to bit-bang the lines and see what the output is and maybe that will help. Oh well.

Pretty sure it will be a solder bridge, try using a meter to check for continuity where there shouldn’t be any.

Good info!  Its giving me the 50% Green 50% red flash from what I can tell.  Literally all I did was remove the clock cap.  It did have a modchip in it (A green pcb one)  Ill have to snap a picture of it once I open it again.  Maybe best bet it to install one of these 2.6's in the 1.0 xbox.  Right now I am just happy I have a working one  (my crystal 1.6 with the aladdin chip and the dvd drive from the 1.0)

When say did have modchip in it, is it still there? Check that the D0 is still attached, are there any other wires attached?

Okay I have realized that the term "original" is quite overloaded in this context. I should have made this more clear. Sorry!

The games I was testing are not backups, they are retail discs that I own. I could call them "genuine" games if that makes more sense.

I never ripped any of these (except for copying some of them to the HDD with Dvd2Xbox).

I do own however some backup discs of different games from my childhood. For example, I own a backup of Forza Motorsport. I also have a  "genuine" one that I have picked up just recently.

If I put in backup disc of Forza Motorsport, it plays just fine but if I put in the "genuine" one, it goes to a black screen.

By this, I made a conclusion that the Xbox can play backups but not "genuine" discs...however I could be wrong because the backup could have a patch applied to it.

A few minutes ago as a sanity check, I picked up a backup of "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" from the basement...and it goes to a black screen just like the "genuine" games so I most likely came to a wrong conclusion way too fast.

I should have tested more backups and see which works and which doesn't. I got plenty of backups in the basement.

I also own another Original Xbox with a Samsung Drive (it is also a 1.6) so I could simply replace the drive and see what happens. I need to replace the rubber belt in that one anyway.

Swap the drives when you can so you can narrow the problem. Do you know what bios you have on the duo, try the other bank and see if you have the same issue.
