That's the idea. If i come in contact with another 1.4 in the future, it may be useful if i want to make 1 functional board out of 2.

Photos from a smartphone can deceive a lot. What you are pointing is just... Spent flux (again). I'm sorry because I took the photo just after doing some soldering and didn't clean the board yet. What I ended up is buying a new board and PSU. Someone fairly near my location was selling his 1.6 board along with it's PSU. The board was near mint condition. The only issues it had was one of the filter caps was slightly bulging, and the clock cap also was slightly bulging (which is kinda weird, as 1.6 clock caps are way harder to break). I did some modding: I cut down a peg on the case, along with a bit of shielding, as 1.0-1.5 cases had one extra standoff that the 1.6 doesn't have, and the shielding on that spot has to be trimmed to avoid shorting. Then I did RedHerring's clock bypass mod, as 1.6 consoles won't boot without the clock cap and I didn't have a replacement (and also, the clock cap is kinda useless as my Xbox will get the time from NTP at boot anyway) I rebuilded the LPC, soldered a female pin header, and added 2 wires to my ModXO that are required for the 1.6 that I hadn't before as for the 1.4 weren't needed (the 3.3 line and the LFrame line). I added another ide HDD that I had, as I re-locked the previous one, and forgot to unlock it before all of this lol. It's fine, as that drive was 40GB and this one is 80GB. From now on, I won't lock the drive, as it's kinda pointless with a modchip installed. I did re-lock on the other console when experimenting on how to make it work. Now the Xbox works fine. I'm kinda sad I couldn't fix the 1.4, but I'm totally ok with the 1.6 Frankenstein I made. This thread can be closed if the mods see it appropriate. Thank you all for your help

Could this issue be somehow a power issue? What voltages should the power supply have? It may be that whenever the console needs to draw more power, it can't get enough and shuts itself off for security? And maybe thats's why the OG boot animation gets only a black screen? as it's 3D?

Okay. Turns out that the potential mangled trace was just spent flux that wasn't cleaned properly. Same for the FOCUS chip. Today i tried to boot the original BIOS using PrometheOS, if i use Cerbios. It works fine, but if i try OG BIOSes, the console just reboots. Inside PrometheOS, sometimes the console shuts off by itself. Also, the latest Cerbios should work with this 1.4, right? I'm not sure what to do anymore. It's a bit discouraging seeing how nothing i try work. I am now pretty convinced the issue is something wronk with the hardware, possible the MCPX is damaged in some way. EDIT: i tried to load ATV: Quad Power Racing 2, and it gets stuck at the Dolby Logo, then shuts off

The potential bridge may be leftover flux that didn't get cleaned well, i'll scrub it with IPA and an old toothbrush. I didn't notice the AV port traces, i'll check them. Hopefully this at least fixes the audio issues. Thank you for the help

Hi again. I attached some photos of the board. Also, i touched up a bit the pins of the AV port with new solder, in case there was some pin with a cracked connection, but that didn't do anything to fix the audio issue. The console continues to do weird shit. Whenever i try to do anything on the Avalaunch dashboard, be it open the file explorer, or to upload something through ftp, the console freezes and locks up. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm starting to think that maybe it's better to give up and buy a new one. When the console freezes, there is no change in the power LEDs, it stays fixed green. I hope the photos have enough resolution. If you want some clouse up of a specific zone i could do another pic. Thank you all

I didn't try another TV, but, the TV definitely does have audio. I tested the AV audio with a GameCube and it works fine. As for the cable, I tried both the original AV cable and a Composite adapter. When I had my friend's 1.6, I used the cables from my console and his indiscriminately on his console and everything worked fine, this leads me to believe the issue is, in fact, the Xbox and not the TV. I wish it were that simple though, that just by replacing the cable it would fix the issue, bit no, this is not one of those occasions lol. Does anyone know any Debugging tools that can leave logs that I can read through? Like, on Linux, you can try to see errors that don't make a pop-up, but leave a log. Does the Xbox have something similar? This would be nice to also see why it struggles with the default boot animation and not others, or why it reboots trying to load some software/game but not with other software. This is the kind of issue I hate the most, the "intermittent" or ambiguous ones. It is way harder to troubleshoot a system that fails randomly that one that is failing consistently. Also, one thing that I kinda mentioned but not very detailed, is that the Xbox refusesld to boot before installing the mod chip. The HDD that it came with was in fact the original one, and it was locked (paired) with the console. Could it be that the corrosion from the cap affected somehow the TSOP? Would just removing the TSOP potentially fix this? If I'm not wrong, the mod chip bypass the TSOP entirely. Sometimes, the Xbox does a reboot when powering one for the first time, and then it gets into PrometheOS/CerBIOS, kinda like and old engine trying to start. Could this be because it tries to boot from the TSOP, fails, and then boots from the modchip? I have the D0 point grounded up as of now, but before I had it on a pin of the Pi pico. Decided to do the grounding instead later as it would allow me to remove the modchip from the header easier. Of I'm not wrong, it is the same functionality (and the behavior I have with both methods is the same). It's kinda baffling that my friend's 1.6 gave me less headaches, having to rebuild the LPC and all, that the supposedly easier to mod 1.4 Well, this was a lot of questions, sorry for that, but the more I think about why does this Xbox don't work properly, the more I think about potential errors or issues. Thank you all for the suggestions and tips. I hope this can be fixed. In the worst case scenario, I could try buying another one, and have this one as a donor for future projects.

okay, that didn't do anything. And while trying to fix the audio is also important, the main issue is that the console exhibits a very weird behaviour for apparently no reason. (Eg, the "allergy" it has for the default boot animation), and that it fails to load games properly From PrometheOS, the system info seems to be ok, it says i have 64mb of RAM, etc. the temperatures are also ok, arround 40 - 45 degrees celsius. I changed the thermal paste not long ago with artix MX6, maybe it was kinda overkill, but it is what i had at hand lol. The default install from Hazeno has missing thext on XBMC4gamers, not sure if it's the uploader fault, or my console's. I guess it is the second, as a lot of people of the community recommends Hazeno's stuff. What i could try to do, but i'm not sure if it will help, is to try to reflow the MCPX, as it seems to handle a lot of stuff (IDE, Network, i think audio as well...) it could be that there is some pad that it is not making good contact. The other IC that could be the culprit is the SMC. Before attempting this, i would appreciate if someone could give me some insight in this matter, as i don't wanna risk getting the console on a worse state or even breaking it. Thank you all in advance.

I'll try this, and also I'll use some IPA with the connector that goes into the console, just for good measure.

Yes, to recap: No audio nowhere, not OG dashboard, not on custom (xbmc4g), not on games. The boot animation, if left at the default one, only does a black screen and gets stuck there. If changed to any other boot animation, it does work (with no audio, of course) and gets to XBMC4G correctly. I strongly believe there is a hardware issue, but not really sure how to pinpoint where it is. The board, apart from the area where the cap leaked, looks fine. I checked continuity of the traces that were rotten and they all have continuity, and are each one isolated from the other traces. I think I mentioned it before, I did replace EVERY capacitor on the board, except for the clock cap, which is removed. The board revision is a 1.4 if I'm not mistaken. I'll post photos of the board whenever I can. Thank you for the help

Happy new year to all. I tried to adjust the volume with the Right stick. Yeah, it was at 0% but that didn't fix the audio issue, sadly. As I have a ModXO, I installed PrometheOS, as it has an utility to format drives and you have FTP access without the need of a dashboard. This is awesome and just what I needed to try "a fresh start". After formating, copying a new C and E partition from Hazeno, and booting cerbios, I encountered the same issues as before. Whith the default boot animation, black screen, no audio. If I change it to any other boot animation, it works. I have it now on the "Modern" animation. PrometheOS also let's you adjust your AV settings, and change the console region. I am from Europe, so I have it on PAL(50) The audio settings, I tried with and without digital and DTS activated, with mono, stereo and surround, but nothing worked. When launching the OG dashboard (the one made by Microsoft), there is no audio. Is there any debugging tool I could use to determine if something on my Xbox is failing? Thank you all in advance

Yeah, no audio at all. I tried both with an original AV cable and a component adapter. The boot animation path is the default one, and it is in the correct folder. I have done some testing and I realized that, as they are actually just .xbe files, I could just run them. Weirdly, every other boot animation works fine, except the one with the pulsating blob. Don't remember if the other boot animations had sound though, it would be nice to rule out the audio problem. I'll try doing what you say with the right stick it would be pretty funny if that was the solution to one of the problems lol. As for the files, I cloned the OG HDD as that one booted, then from the cloned drive, I installed through FTP a tool that basically erases all the HDD, XBtable partitioner or something along those lines. So yeah, as of now, it should not have any old files. I read that hardmod and soft mod don't mix well. I'll write again after trying the Right stick trick and looking more into the EEPROM settings. Thank you all

aeleequis started following Xbox 1.4 ModXO CerBIOS 2.4.2 | Weird Limbo state

Hi everyone. As i mentioned on my introductory post, I have an 1.4 OG Xbox that isn't quite right. I bought it knowing it didn't work, the seller told me a friend of his had replaced the caps and it worked for a while, but that now it's back to not working (when i bought it). After buying it and testing it, it did the classic fragging (reboot 3 times and then "Christmas lights"). When i opened the case, i found the that friend of his did replace some caps, the CPU/GPU ones, but left one without replacing that is arguably way more urgent to replace... the clock cap. Yes, it had already leak all over the place. I cleaned all the acid, removed the cap. Installed a ModXO... and the console boots up!.... but it does by itself, when plugging it to AC... that's not good. Also, pressing the eject button powered off the console. I latter discovered that this is a very known symptom of trace rot. A very good video about it is in the Retro Renegade Repairs channel, he explains in detail how to fix it. It is a matter of bridging the broken traces. If the damage is minimal, you can just bridge tiny gaps, but as i had the trace broken a few times along its length, i opted for just bridging the starting point and ending point of each broken trace with a very thin wire (i used an old IDE cable). This fixed the self powering issue and the eject button works! well, the button does, the tray doesn't open, but that was because the elastic band inside the tray was very old and loose. After cleaning and greasing the tray mechanism, i discovered that the DVD seems to be dead already. It is a Thomson, from what i read over the internet, those drives are the worst ones. So it appears as the previous owner had attempted a softmod, as the HDD already had games and a custom Dashboard. I cloned the Drive with CHIMP, and used XBTable Partitioner to make the clone a new drive, after configuring everything to my liking, i discovered a weird thing. When powering the console, there was no boot animation. Cerbios has a custom one, where is the same as the OG but with custom colors. The screen is just blank, nothing. If i power the console with the Eject button, the console boots in safe mode, skipping the boot animation and goes straight into XBM4G. Then i noticed something i didn't already, there was no sound at all. XBMC4G makes sounds when you move the cursor, but this was completely silent. When launching games, some would load, but then get stuck, and some would just reboot the console. This is where i realized something is still wrong with the console, but i don't really know what. I replaced EVERY capacitor on the board, to no avail. One thing that may have caused this, but i am not really sure, is that when i tried to put an 80 wire IDE cable, the console rebooted itself. The thing is, i don't really remember if the console did or didn't have audio before that. And if this has damaged any crucial part of the motherboard, like the MCPX. I don't think the issue is the RAM, as i read on-line that if it were the case, the console wouldn't even boot. Any ideas? thank you all

Hi, I'm new here. I have been captivated by the OG Xbox community since I repaired my friend's 1.6 console, it had an old clone of a "Duo X2" chip which booted like, 1 out 10 times lol. I replaced it with a ModXO, and, after configuring everything and doing some testing on the console, i fell in love. After returning the console to my friend, i decided to buy one myself. I procured a 1.4 for just 30€, and also a component adapter for just 10€. I was overjoyed. My own Xbox! I love collecting retro hardware, and i never considered getting a Xbox as i thought they were rare or expensive. Turns out, that you can get them pretty cheap if you don't mind getting them with blown capacitors lol. As i already did fix one console, i thought this one would be easy to fix, but it is giving me some trouble. I'll talk about it on its dedicated thread though, i just wanted to share my story. I hope to get along well with all of you! Also, happy (almost) new year!
