What cable do you use for your XBox?

    composite cable

    Is this what you mean

Yes, but it covered much more of teh text than that.

I am wondering if maybe the video calibration I did on the installed dashboard was what fixed it.

  2. These updates, dlcs, and patches. It just extracts them and then I need to run them, correct?
And does it matter in what order, if a game has say a 720p patch and a DLC, and a update?
Will the game need to have been played for the patches to be applied? Is thier any way to unpatch if it produces undesirable results?

Can I install the 720p patches and then still use a Composite Video that cannot handle that resolution? (component cable in mail)

  3. not sure how much variance is ok. the second down on the right is 4v. and the second last left is 3.2. the other 3.3s are 3.25 or 3.24

i also have 4 0s on 12 pin main power connector. on pins 6 to 10 from left to right(looking at the connecting side of the connector)

  4. Just to be clear, it is perfectly capable of running for as long as it wants. It is just starting that causes an issue. And it really seems heat related. Give it 5-10 minutes to cool off and it seems to work most/all of the time, while it almost never seems to want to start up immediately after stopping.

  5. Hmm, now it seems that when I go to turn it on, sometimes it will cycle ifself on and off 3 times, without video out. It seems to do this more often when it is warm from just running. I read it is trying to load the bios when this happens and can be a power connector issue. Maybe I should check all my solders? Or do you have any recommendations? Like maybe I should swap in a new PSU?

  6. Researched online, and it looks like the games natively support higher res than av does. It seems like these cheap cables are slightly worse than the best solutions, but then they are many times more expensive.

I will have to change some settings to tell the games to output better graphics?

  7. SO that worked! installing games now, so much nostalgia. This XBMC4gamers seems really slick, but the current version is a little buggy. I was searching amazon for controllers and noticed a Component cable? Would that significantly help, I notice text is pretty blurry? Or would that only effect the dashboard?

I had never a probelm with them and as far as I know no other user had problems with them. The TXT open ful screen but they should not going bigger as the screen is. And you HDD or the content on it has nothing to do with it.

Do you want me to try and replicate, and maybe catch on video? Or we should assume it is just me who had the problem (past tense) so not worth the time?

  9. I assume this is a known issue, but the readme files do not work right unless the disc is already installed.

Before it installed everything to my hdd, the text viewer spilled out well past the edges of the screen, but now with everything installed, it is centered and width-ed perfectly. I do not know how hdd contents could effect this like this, but I opened and read many of these text files pre-installation (over many restarts) and every single one was effected by it and then 30 minutes latter they all were not.

  10. Lol, ok so their was a diagram right on the drive and I was just ignoring it. It was all wrong but fixing it produced no different results. it looks like I had to set to 32gb only mode - Slave, but the usb drive encloser was just ignoring this anyway I guess. Once it seemed to hang forever like the other drive but a reboot got it right back into "needing service".

Often the install disc boots without the background wallpaper, is this normal or a sign of a failing dvd drive?

Still have a one more thing to try with UBCD, but I am getting less confident. But presumably I could reflash an old bios and then when it is booting again with the HDD upgrade with the wd Green setting enabled.

Please advise which bios to flash to work with this idling drive, and if this will be possible with one of the prebuild installers or this will be more complicated. I probably want to just install a dashboard to the org hdd and then use that to flash the bios? If flashing is not really that dangerous, this is probably the best method anyways, it is a pain to reboot my computer and change half a dozen setting in the bios every time I want to get to UBCD.

  11. didnt work. still just boots to service needed with an unalocated volume.  jumper is in same position, but not labeled. switch to org hd and boots to disc. strangely it does not show the linus logo as loading, but it works so idc.

did eventually figure out how to turn off uefi mode so i could boot to ubcd, but it does not see my usb drive.

  12. Sweetdarkdestiny helped me over on the install disc thread, but I did not want to keep filling that up with unrelated discussion. So it is confirmed that it is a HDD issue. Right now I am trying to get dvd booting to work to hopefully fix the issue. He thinks that wdidle3 will fix my problem, but it needs a dos based OS to run and right now UEFI seems to be messing with my ability to boot UBCD.

But I have found another bigger IDE hard drive. it seems to be working with a linux mint installation on it. I can connect this to my computer with USB. What sort of formatting do I need to do to try out this hdd as an option?

I've bought a brand new dvd burner and now it seems to be working better, but still not working. I burned the iso and boot with the disc in the xbox. The ring turn red and i see Evo X, Xbox logo and Linux logo below. But nothing happens, the dvd drive works like crazy is very loud but I've been stuck here for 5 minutes. What now?

Why not use BootCamp and a Windows 7 VM and then burn it with ImgBurn/ImgBurnPortable?

I don't now nothing (not much) about Mac. Or maybe a frind or neighbor could burn the ISO with ImgBurn. I realy think the Mac is the problem OR your DVD media (Thats why 99 of 100 user say Verbatim DVD-R (Or you are on of these lucky ppl. which have a XBox DVD drive that can still read DVD-RW).

Last option, if you are located somewhere in europe I could burn a DVD and send it to you.

If it is a dvd compatibility issue I suggest burning at the slowest speed possible. Sometimes that fixes compatibility issues. At least that will give you the best possible chance.

But now you have a "modern" bios which don't support the WD Green HDD's out of the box.

They will work with an cheapo SATA adapter from amazon.

MSDos, FreeDos, DOS on a USB stick (+app). Or if you are to lazy for that download the " Ultimate Boot CD " which will boot into DOS and has this tool already on it. Tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEUVsXlfJME

OK, haha. Thanks for the video, I am sure getting dos to recognize the usb drive will require a tutorial.

And watching the video I am getting no sound. I had to steal my audio power cord to power the barrel connector hdd encloser. That was pretty jank, but 12v made sense and you would think it would have more than enough amps.

    "wdidle3 v1.05 (WD Green HDD).zip".

How do you get this to run on modern OS? google searching seems to indicate even DOSbox will not run 64bit incompatible software??? I could try formatting it, this drive was working for 10-15 years and even yesterday, it is just the new bios that is having trouble with it, which makes be think it might not be green.

  16. But I am also just realizing that i have a lot of IDE HDDs lying around, maybe I should just plop one of those in? Here is a Hitachi 640gb, looks oem. I think this one was working last time I used it. It is way bigger, so probably like 5+ years newer. Edit: Oh, NM that is sata, still might have others that work.

  17. OK so it does not boot with no disc. And when I installed the original hdd it would boot to both the original dash and to the install disc.

So, 100% the bootup process is getting stuck on trying to boot my HDD. Is their a way to have it boot 100% off of the disc or does the install disc use part of the OS on the hardrive? I am pretty sure that I cannot hot swap hdds after booting to the disc, but I should have some ide to usb things around.

Should I just try and delete all the evoxdash.xbe files? Or format it? Presumably one of these tools in the PC tool set will help.
