...... Noob THE PIN IS MISSING. ARE YOU KIDDING RIGHT NOW? YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE THE HOLE.

All drives are the same with their ide connection. I have been doing this a while now. There is no reason why MS would have different IDE connections for different drives. They would settle on a single spec. The fact that our drives are not the same model is irrelevant. If that was a point of yours, you never made it known until now.

But that doesn't matter because YOUR DRIVE HAS THE PIN MISSING like I said. The cable will work. Would you please stop this and buy the parts we're telling you you need?

it seems that that may be right, I just need the startech and the new cables since the one I have is just too short and it's not going to work anyway with any adapter I have since they all have all pins. yeah, i miscalculated, I thought they were 21 in the row so to have 10 pins on both sides but they're actually 9 on the left and 10 on the right. pretty strange. yeah ok, nothing surprising, I've always been a disaster in algebra, but I don't think I'll buy anything, I mean, if I get the money from the console I'm selling I might as well buy a new PC to emulate it all with Xemu, which is probably the best thing for me.

well thanks for clarifying things out. now at least I know what to do.

btw: fyi, consider that here in Italy the adapter doesn't cost just 20$ it costs 40€ (around 50$) same goes for cables and other stuff, just to help you figuring out why I'm so reluctant.

Then why does the DVD ROM drive have a pin missing? Quite simply, this is not true.

@technoob I don't have a preoccupation with being right. I only want to ensure that you and anybody reading this thread ends up with accurate information that they can base their decisions on.

YOU, however, seem to have a preoccupation with being defensive and proud. This is going to make it impossible for you to receive constructive criticism or accept advice that will make your life much easier, much sooner. This is senseless and unfortunate. Sure we're grilling you, but that's because you're arguing with us when you came HERE for help... But for some reason we're wrong and you know better than us.

Please accept the advice that ANYBODY on this site will give you: buy an 80wire cable, like the one I linked and buy a StarTech. They are not a waste of money. You are experiencing problems because you're using a stock cable. It is common knowledge to everybody here that when upgrading to SATA, you need to also replace the stock cable with an 80 wire. Unless you're trolling, there is no logical reason to argue with us.

Take the advice and have your Xbox work... Or be proud and stubborn and experience issues. Not a hard decision.

we have different drives, that's the point. there's no "i'm right, you're wrong / i say the truth, you lie "
look at it carefully and mind that I tried once to connect the other cable and messd with a couple of those pins.
and sorry for the blurry images, I was just too pissed to keep the focus, if that makes you happy.

What do you consider to be official? :) are we not following directions? Do we all have DVD ROM drives that simultaneously work but do not? I don't know what you're trying to say here. Anybody else here will tell you the same thing.

Sigh... I'll take some pics tonight.

By official I meant "the things you guys say" ... geez... let's just get over it. You don't need to waste time taking pics and I'm not arguing with anyone.

Correct. It can't have both rows or an 80wire would not be backwards compatible. Please look again. @technoob

just checked. all pins are there. some are even retracted god knows why, possibly my past attempts to make it work with my old windows pc cable at the time I had the green bogus adapter. really, let's just quit it at the moment, I'll be back when I have enough money to waste and follow the official guides and reccomendations.

    He's talking about this, @Marty That's a stock 40 wire.

    61-WEb-Plrz-L.jpg

That is an 80 wire. He is correct. The 80 wire has one less pin. @technoob

However. It is designed this way. And like I said, you will see that the StarTech has the same missing pin in order to accommodate this cable, or it would not even be able to be used.

Noob, buy an 80-wire cable buddy.

As said before, there would be still the problem of the DVD drive that has all the pins on both rows. Withouth the DVD drive I can't install Evox which runs on CD so it's all pointless.

Noob. Read the reviews of that cable. It shows people with it INSTALLED IN THEIR XBOXES. This cable is mandatory for anybody using the SATA adapter and has always been. You don't need to be skeptical...

I know and I trust that, I just have logic doubts to solve.

  6. 2 minutes ago, Bowlsnapper said:

Theyre all missing on EIDE/80-wire cables. 40 have all the openings present. 80 wires have the missing hole. If you look on the StarTech, you will see that the same pin is missing. It's designed into the cable and is not something you should worry about. If it didn't work, people wouldn't use it. Look at all the reviews of people using them with their Xboxes.

    It will work fine.

ok the adapter can connect to that because it seems it missed the pin in the middle, but what about the dvd drive ? it has all the pins

  7. 3 minutes ago, Bowlsnapper said:

Noob... You need to use an 80 wire cable, buddy. The stock IDE cable will not work for you. Please trust this. We all have a LOT of experience with it.

This may get your cheapo adapter to work... With no DVD ROM drive. I would get a StarTech if the cheapo won't work for you. If you get a StarTech and that ide cable, you will, theoretically, have zero problems with your HDD setup, at least as it pertains to your cable and adapter. Please don't give up.

what about the blank pin in the middle of that cable?

  8. I'm using the default cable of the Xbox, which worked both with the original hdd and others "upgraded" larger hdd

even if I get one, there's still that master/slave thing which is impossible to know with the adapter I bought, according to the seller it was used with a usb 2.0 network station.

really, people need to sell adapters in bundle with cables and make it economically accessible, I think I have wasted enough time, patience and money already. already put the consoles on sale anyway... so it's not like I'm that interested anymore...

These were built with the understand that their use would be primarily in PC's, where you would have full channel configuration available through the BIOS.

yep, reading on various reviews on amazon, it seems like it wasn't made for devices with more than 1 drive.
case solved, this adapter sucks and I lost my money.

The SATA drives don’t have the pin designation for that. Unfortunately he will have to set it on the adapter which doesn’t appear to have one as crazy as that is. That particular adapter I mean.

Then why the other green adapter didn't work as it had master/slave jumper?

  11. Hi all, I've recently bought this adapter , I connected it to the power and the data cables (Seagate SATA 250gb drive 3.5"), inserted Slayer Evox 2.7 DVD, but it stucks a bit into the Xbox splash screen (while showing the pink icon on the top-left, no "Slayer Evox 2.7" appears below the Xbox logo) before giving me Error 16.

So I switched back to the old PATA drive, Evox launched correctly, switched the drives (while Evox still running) but :
    - when I format, it takes ages and returns '0' on each partition

    - when I try to lock/unlock it freezes (blank text on blue container)

    - when I try install as new large hdd it takes to formatting

    - when I try to install just Evox on C it takes weirdly no time (after formatting all partitions took ages as usual). Edit: I just tried, left the console for a while, then returned and as before all partitions shown '0' and when I reboot (thinking the install process was complete) same Error 16 as before, sometimes error 7

So what I'm supposed to do?
FYI: the adapter has no "slave/master" thing on it, just the 40 pins and the power ones (but it seems making the hard drive working/sounding).

... Why don't I just buy you a Startech? lmao! I understand the principal you're trying to express, but look at it this way: You're taking a 40 dollar console and turning it into a 200 dollar console if you do what I do (well a few times anyway, so far :p) and put a bunch of xbox games and emulators on it, plus add lighting, etc. It's about 50 bucks for a 2TB HDD, 10 bucks for an 80 wire IDE cable and 20 bucks for a startech. You may end up using the console often if you put certain things on the HDD. Like 20 consoles of emulators and games. :)

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing badass!

I dunno... I actually tried to convert the console into a "retro-console" some time ago, with emulators and stuff but many often (even if they're up to date) emulators crashed or they didn't work, so I basically use my PC for emulators, while keeping the console for what it is: an original Xbox for Xbox-exclusive titles which were not available for PC (same goes for my other consoles). At this rate, I'd may wait some more years to find a suitable PC, cheap enough to emulate all 6th gen console easily (as for now, unfortunely, emulation on Xemu, PCSX2 and Dolphin are very demanding and I can barely play them on native resolution, surprisingly only FlyCast is doing well... but the reason is known to anyone: emulators try to guess the mechanics, they don't actually know them exactly). There's plenty to play in the meanwhile and I'm happy with the current Xbox titles I'm able to play (only a few against the whole thing, I know, but it's fine for me).

It's just a matter of "principle" to me, I mean, the only price I could define adhering to common sense for a simple adapter would be... 5€, no more. I hope sellers will understand this, instead of taking advantage of the "niche" factor of retrogaming. But hey, they're selling HDMI resamplers for PS2 at 500$. I hope they feel honest about themselves, lol.

  13. 4 hours ago, Bowlsnapper said:

Hell, it's 11 bucks. Like I said, if you're trying to research it to see if you should buy a bulk, it may be worth the effort, but if you're only buying one of these for personal use, just spend 9 more dollars and get a startech. Lol.

Yeah, I know I can just pick the startech and go, but it's just weird, kinda against common sense, I mean there are people selling the whole console for 50€, I have to spend 30€ (average prize on ebay) for just a "piece" of it all, for a console I don't use that often? It just looks absurd to me, so I'll just hang around the market to see if the price gets finally humane, lol (afterall, things get old, rarity can be the reason for high price, but they should know nobody's gonna buy those things, as I see them still there for years).

It's impossible to say how well it will perform because the chipset is intentionally being covered with that dumb ass sticker. Lol. They're probably trying to make it look like a Startech and hide the fact that it uses a substandard chipset.

afterall, it's an Hamlet... to buy or not to buy ?

what type of HDD you gonna install? 2.5"?

Most probably a 250gb 3.5" Seagate ... but it's theoretically  ok, I mean, even it the console will be slightly open, I just need to avoid switching from disks and just have one with all games selectable and even some more space for newer ones (since I'm not done playing 6th gen console exclusives, I guess).

unless startech prices drop by the grace of God, lol

  16. 1 hour ago, Bowlsnapper said:

Although, keep in mind that most cheap adapters max out at UDMA-4 and not 6... sometimes 5 without the DVD-ROM drive present.

I honestly don't know what that means. Is it just a matter of speed/performance of the drive (example: I'd get better performance with a startech) or does it mean the SATA drive I want to use won't be recognized (example, during Slayer Evox CD installation...) Just to clarify my needs, it's always been this way: if I plug a PATA drive, the Xbox correctly launches the Slayer Evox installation disc... if I use another cheap adapter I got on Amazon (the green one) with a SATA drive it displays the error page (can't remember which number, something like 13 or 5). All I'd like to know if that adapter (the one on the 1st post) will make the SATA drive recognizable... (I guess only who actually used it can say for sure). Anyway I asked the seller if it's Xbox-compatible and a pic of the rear (since the SATA plug isn't visible), still awaiting response.
