Xbox boots, Microsoft logo shows up, then hangs with no error

This is happening on a stock console btw, I've read that the Microsoft logo appearing indicates an XBE has been found to launch so it's more likely to be something besides the HDD, there's no error code or change in LED color.

I could put a chip in it and see what happens but maybe someone else who's seen this before could share their experience and save me some time. 🤞🤞

IIRC, when Microsoft appears under the big X at the end of the startup animation, the hard drive has been unlocked.

Next, the C:\xboxdash.xbe file is executed.  If not found, I don't think it goes anywhere and no startup error code screen will be displayed since all of the hardware is functioning as expected.  There's simply no dashboard to start.

Does the console play an original game disc that is loaded in the DVD tray?

Ah okay so it still could be the hard drive, discs won't play but I can't tell if it's the Xbox or if it's just a faulty Thomson drive. I'm gonna hotswap the drive and see what's going on with the files, maybe someone botched a softmod at some point. I'm not sure why it wouldn't throw errors 13-16 if the dash is missing though.
