Modchip Installed but DVD drive broken

I'm currently attempting to hardmod my OG xbox.

I bought it a few years ago with a broken hard drive and am finally getting around to fixing it.

Having installed Open xenium mod chip and booted to xenium OS I found that the DVD drive couldn't read my copy of hexan - which I was going to use to format the HDD and install XBMC.

I know I can format the drive using XboxHDM but I need to read the eeprom, is this true even for a hard modded xbox? I'm quite new to this so I'm not sure what my options are from here, I can try to repair the drive but so far haven't had any success.

Any advice or solutions are much appreciated,

You can prepare everything on PC nowadays with fatxplorer.

So I can preload the dashboard through Fatxplorer when I format the drive, is there any need for XBoxHDM?

What files need to be preloaded - Does the Dashboard go into the C or E partition?

1. Format your HDD with FatXplorer (No pre-load like written in the PDF)
2. After that copy the content of the C folder to your C partition and do the same with E. 
3. Close FatXplorer and disconnect the HDD.
4. Hook up your HDD to your XBox and have fun.

And no, you don't need XBoxHDM. But you could also use XBoxHDM instead of FatXplorer but thats a slightly different topic.
