retrobear
I want to restore a retail HDD for my hardmodded Xbox till my SATA HDD arrives. The 160GB HDD I was using died (Gave Error Code 9) the rest of the Retail HDD I tried just gave out error 16 and couldn't boot onto HeXen. I tried Slayer's and it couldn't detect the HDD or can't unlock it. It gives an Unlock Error. I am at a lost on what to do. I'm still waiting for my SATA to IDE adaptor and SATA HDD. So, I'm at a lost if it's a hardware error on the motherboard or the hard drive is just screwed. sweetdarkdestiny
The HDD is locked to another Xbox.

MadMartigan
You could try and format the drives and go from there I suppose.

MadMartigan
And you are saying that there is absolutely no way around that?
sweetdarkdestiny
If he has the eeprom key from the other XBox he can unlock the drive using XBHDM. I once I had a HDD that was locked. But there fore it was unlocked and locked again using Config Magic and XBlastOS was able to unlock the drive in a different XBox. But again, not to sure if that works if the drive was never unlocked & relocked. 50/50 is guess. So if he is able to make a DVD which boots up XBlastOS (App), XBlastOS is able to unlock the drive using the known default keys. again 50/50. If XBLast refuse to boot up, he could use an evox to launch xblast. Lot of try and error and you may end up where you startet. (With a still locked drive.) MadMartigan
I’m sorry for not being more specific. I was speaking in terms of any good programs out there that can format whatever you throw at it.
sweetdarkdestiny
Because the drive is locked, you can do nothing with it as long as it's locked.

I was speaking in terms of any good programs out there that can format whatever you throw at it. The Xbox's hard drive format - FATX - and ATA security are not something PC application writer's add as a feature to their app for the masses. There are no such good programs that work for anything you throw at them. Especially, specific to one console's - the original Xbox - filesystem FATX and locking/unlocking unique to it. Why add such to a program that most people will never need to use? To unlock the hard drive using the unique USER password for each console/hard drive combo, you need the HDDKey stored in the configuration EEPROM on the Xbox's motherboard. There are a several MASTER passwords that may work to unlock the Xbox hard drive without needing to compute the specific USER password with the Xbox's unique HDDKey along with the hard drive's model and serial number.
