TMan
Hello All, I'm about to get my mod on with one of my old 1.6 Xboxs. I've done a little bit of this, but I'm very intimidated by the "micro soldering" needed for the video ribbon cable. Does anyone out there know what type of soldering hardware I'll need to make that an easier step to accomplish? Tman
Bowlsnapper
Right on. I know what you mean about the ribbon. Soldering that kind of stuff makes me nervous too. The only advice i'm qualified to offer is that flux is your friend.
TMan
Got it. Flux. Sometimes, you just have to go for it. I have a spare I can practice on.
MadMartigan
A semi decent soldering iron, a set of jewelers goggles or a magnifier with a bright bulb, definitely flux(clear liquid no clean). Other flux will do just fine, but will obstruct the clarity of the work.
SS_Dave
My advice is to practice on old PCB's I have 2 irons 1 has a 1mm tip and the other has a 3.2mm tip, The larger one is good for replacing cap's and soldering the pin header with the 1mm used for the finer work. I use either a 0.8mm or a 0.5mm 60/40 solder and I always add flux paste. For cleaning I use isopropyl 99% and a brush like a tooth brush. It's always good to have some solder wick/brade to remove excess solder and work in a well lit location. Cheers SS Dave Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.
locutus2000
Can you share your experiences? I still have mine lying around waiting until I find the time.

Totally cooked first flex, so had to get a second one. As metioned, flux, lots and lots of flux and the opposite with solder. Not alot of soldering. You can tack things down and then drag soler to ensure everythinng is nice and set. I ended up using an angled tip which helped alot and ofcourse microscope made the process a whole lot easier. Definitely was way more challenging than your normal micro soldering for sure!

A microscope? Like, a magnifying glass, or an actual fucking microscope designed for electronics work?
