Hello,

So while softmodding my V1.0 Xbox i managed to fry the original HDD. I was lucky enough to be able to get the Eeprom from the old hdd before it fried but i haven't bee able to find a guide on how to build a new drive.

I had originally bought an 80 wire IDE and startech IDE to SATA adapter and have a 2tb hdd ready to use.

Can anyone guide me on what i need to do to create a new Hdd?

For softmod you have two options.

  1. PC-based tools such as fatxplorer and xboxhdm
  2. Chimp on Xbox

The best tutorials I've found are YouTube videos. Look for videos by The Tech Hoarder and Mr. Mario 2011. If you get stuck, ask here.

Thanks, i did watch a pretty good video by The Tech Hoarder on using xboxhdm but i ran into a problem that i havent been able to overcome yet. About half way through the process i think during the formatting section, i get a "out of memory" error. Then for all remaining steps it reports errors.

I did a search for this error and found a couple of references to it, but non gave a solutions.

If anyone has any solutions to this error it would be appreciated. I have tested this on xboxhdm23usb-Beta2, xboxhdm23usb-Beta3 and xboxhdm23usb-Beta4 and im using a 2tb sata drive.

I recommend trying xbhdm again if you haven’t already and make sure you have the correct install/mod files in the folder containing xbhdm.bat before executing it. I think that is where a lot of people hit the snag.

Also would help to have some more details about the issue. Such as..

What happened when you rebooted the Xbox after soft mod attempt?
Did you get an error code screen after realizing the HDD had failed?

Can you boot into a disc at all?

Thanks for the response.

So i tried xboxhdm again. I noticed that i would get the out of memory error when it would ask if i wanted the F partition formatted. So this time i told it no and it continued without error, says it copied the C and E files i had placed in the relevant folder. So after all was done i locked the hdd and popped it back in the xbox. Now comes a new error, Error 16.

Now i read that error 16 is due to the xbox not being able to find the clock setting part of the dashboard. Did i not copy the correct C drive files? the ones i used were in the Rocky5 v1.1.8 under Installer variants > XBHDM Build > C .  Are these the correct C drive files or was i suppose to add some other C drive files?

If you’re using a stock drive, then you don’t need to do anything with F. That is for larger HDDs. Been a bit since I used xbhdm, but you should be able to skip F in that process.

My initial softmod went without a hitch. Managed to copy my eeprom and null the hard drive key and backed it up to my pc.

I started to have issues when i was trying to upgrade the HDD. My first issues was ChimpLoader wouldn't load and would just shutdown the xbox. That turned out to be the component cables. Swapped the cables for composite and Chimp loaded. After fiddling around with the cable swap fir Chimp i noticed i lost video signal. I rebooted the xbox and then started getting a loud continuous beep coming from the stock drive.

I hooked the stock drive up to my PC using an IDE to usb adapter and after failing to read the drive using xboxhdm i noticed that the adapter was super hot and i could smell burning. At this point i knew the drive was dead.

This is what brought me onto try and rebuild the drive using a new 2tb sata drive.

Again, check to be 100% sure you have the correct files in the root folder that you’re booting xbhdm.bat from. It should looks like this. Inside the C folder, you need to Rocky5 install files that are included in the soft modding tools. The eeprom.bin of course should be you nulled eeprom. Here is a nice guide to follow.

Yes.

Edit:

Even though the author says it is for hardmodded consoles only - don't worry.  You simply need to softmod the console after installling the stock MS dashboard to the C drive.  Or, instead use Rocky5's XBHDM Build.zip content for the C drive's content.

That guide says DO NOT use with soft mods.

I don't believe that is TRUE.

Not sure why they state that.    I need to double check a couple of things but there's no reason a formatted and prepared hard drive will not work for a softmodded console.

However, the content they preinstall is not softmodded.  Once the drive is prepared and LOCKED - maybe they don't show how to lock the hard drive - you will need the eeprom.bin backup to lock the drive for it to work in an umodded console. Install the hard drive and softmod the console.

Yes, the part they don't show is locking the hard drive.  A hardmodded console does not require the hard drive to be locked.  But, for a softmodded console, it boots the stock BIOS which requires the hard drive to be locked.

Use XboxHDM23USB Beta 3 to do so.  Place the copy of your eeprom.bin backup file in the folder where you extracted the application to.  Run it and use the menu option 3. Lock hard drive to lock it.

XboxHDM23USB does require the Xbox hard drive to be attached to the PC using a compatible USB-to-HDD Interface adapter.

Do you have such an adapter?

Some adapters require the batch files to be edited to recognize the adapter so the hard drive can be locked.  There are some adapter's that just don't work since they don't pass through all of the IDE bus commands to the hard drive to lock it.

If you have a USB-to-HDD interface adapter, do you know the idVendor and idProduct values for it?

Edit: You can lock a SATA hard drive connected to a SATA port on your PC.  You don't run XboxHDM23USB Beta 3.  You run the application from a Run as Administrator cmd.exe window that is included with it in the XboxHD subfolder, smartctl.exe, with the correct command-line options to lock the SATA hard drive .

Good News. New 2tb Hdd rebuild has been successful. The error 16 was due to me using the original 40 wire ide cable. As soon as i switched to the new 80 wire it loaded.

Rebuilt the c dive with original MS dash, also built the E partition with the rocky5 softmod files. That way when i loaded up splinter cell the softmod save was ready to go. Got xbmc4gamers installed and made sure the F and G partitions were formatted and ready to go.

Happy with the way things turned out with xboxhdm.

Thanks for all the help. Would have posted my success sooner but i had a 24hr limit cause i posted too much yesterday.
