XBox Internal Hdmi Install

Well this got me thinking.  Why am I using my DIY Xbox 360 spliced component cable plugged into a component to HDMI converter?  Why not gut my component HDMI converter down to the PCB, remove the original AV connector, put it in the xbox and wire directly to the AV points on the xbox mobo.  I can easily steal the +5V that the converter needs from the mobo as well.  No more wires into boxes into another wire and have to use my tv's usb port to power the box?

Only issue i'm seeing is i bought a cheap amazon converter so I might have to end up redoing the mod down the road when (not if) the converter dies. Really that's not that big of a deal.  Hmmm i may have found my new project for the weekend.  And for once I don't have to order anything to accomplish it.  Love me some $0 mods!

Having said that, however; @N64 freak you REALLY do need to mass produce these for the community.  Seems like such an elegant solution that isn't being fully realized.  I know you want to make sure the product is good for the long haul and testing is essential to that but i'm sure that if you did a run of the boards at the very least the people on these forums would be more than happy to pick one up to use on a spare system for now.  As long as you can get them reasonably priced I'd definitely be in for one.  In the meantime I think i'm going to try my internal converter mod.  BYE BYE COMPONENT CABLE! :)

@306XBOX I will never get them mass produced. It's just a hobby for me and i'll build a few as long as i'm interested in doing it. Once i loose interest they will be gone and there won't be more

@Blobby85 If you want one drop me a PM. The test consoles work great and i will offer them soon. If someone already wants one drop me a PM. BUT they aren't the easiest install but it's doable. But to be honest if someone botches up the install because he underestimated the install i won't ship out a second one...

I don't have any external cables right now and i'm not too keen to keep too many projects alive at once. Currently i focus on the internal install.

if you dont mind me asking why would the converter fail and how long do you think it might last?

I dunno.  I'm just being paranoid of a cheap product. It very well may last a while.  It ended up that I didn't do the mod yet as I was curious what N64Freak was charging for his board and the fact that my roomate is now using the converter in his room.  I might still pick up another one to try.  If it for some reason fails then I could always hit up N64freak for one of his boards. (assuming he has one available).

Just reading through this topic and  wow I agree with everyone here N64freak  it would be awesome if you mass produced these or if you didn't want the burden maybe have a trusted member do it for you and pay you royalties per chip then you could fund future projects you may have in mind :-):-) just a thought tho.. anyways  if you ever have one extra for sale I would love to get one .. thanks and keep up the amazing work .

I am up for these to be produced. I grow tired of my current set up of component cable to external hdmi convertor and its limited monitor compatability.

let me know when you are on for production etc, or if you need some one with a odd ball set up to test them. I use a video switcher on one of my screens that my current convertor seems to randomly hate/not hate.

My internal install does not have the issues on rev1.4 consoles as the pound one has. They are built up with properly and work. Of course the earlier ones were partly a little buggier but the design got improved with every itertion.

I bought a pound hdmi cable to compare it to my cable but on the same console as my cable the pound cable blacked out around every second. So i had more black screen time than actual video and to be honest that was enough test result for me to keep improving my design.

I sold a few sets off DIY install kits but it looks like most people couldn't get them installed properly so no open sale for DIY install kits. I just want to save me from the hastle off guiding a lot off people through the process. It is NOT a simple diy install like a chip install. You need to have proper soldering skills or at least you should be quite confident in what you do! Just knowing which side off the soldering iron get hot is NOT enough knowledge!  xD

And there won't be any more off either the internal or external HDMI mods in the next couple weeks as i won't have the time to build up more. So people who want one need to be patient for a bit. Still testing the existing consoles so even the last bugs that arrise can be ironed out first and well as i already mentioned i won't have time to build more anyway!

And of course i'm still thinking about if i even sell them as kits as it might frustrate a few buyers that they can't get it installed. And it will cost me a LOT off time just to troubleshoot those installs. And i really don't want to go through that hastle as it will reduce my free time even more!

I am more than happy to buy as a kit. I spent years working in the electronics industry, spent my apprenticeship learning to work to military spec. Soldering correctly is an OCD thing to me. I hate it when I find commercial electronics not soldered correctly.

currently waiting on the delivery of a new rework station as I keep borrowing a friends one.

You're not Walmart, dude.  No one is going to expect you to teach them how to solder, troubleshoot their shit solder job and hold their hand the whole way.  By the looks of your PCB it's fairly straightforward.  No messy bodge wires halfway across the board to some tiny via like an old school mod chip install.  Just be clear that you offer no support on it and no one can complain that you're not helping them.  You're helping the scene immensely by taking the time to create the board in the first place.  No one would think you're a bad person for not wanting to answer 50 emails a day from some kid who bridged solder points on their mobo and fried it.  I realize there's a line between doing the right thing and standing by your product versus just selling something and not taking returns in the unlikely event that there's an actual problem with the chips..  You've been very candid from the start that this is a very doable install for most people but isn't for everyone.  I'm sure no one is thinking it just snaps into the ATX connector and you're done and if they are thinking that as long as you clearly state that's not the case then you're covered.

The more I think about it, I do see your reluctance is justified.  It's not a big enough scene anymore to warrant licensing the PCB design to a bigger company and taking a royalty.  That would be good for you in that you wouldn't have to support it, it would be up to the website that was selling it to decide how to handle returns etc.  If even a hundred people purchased it, there's no way a company would bother adding a sku for it... probably?

Regardless of what you do, just know that at the very least there are people on this board right now that are interested.  Ok maybe don't take out a bank loan to purchase a run of 10,000 units but I could see 15 or so being snatched up by board members.  That's some nice cash depending on what you price them at.

Just something to consider.

I would like to think, that those truly interested in a PCB kit should already know what they are getting into (and probably have experience/skill soldered) when purchasing something like this. I wouldn't expect a seller to walk me through the installation part of this kind of DIY project (should you decide to offer a DIY PCB installation kit).

Theres enough users here and on the other remaining xbox forums that would buy these, many more than one each. More than a few users on the av forums that use xboxes as media players would snap them up.  Even evilBay would likely be a market, afterall how many of us buy our boxes from there.

There are quite a few chinese companies who specialise in small batch production, and wouldnt be massively expensive. Many also do component build too.

Recently I read an article and watched related video on these places. Many working out of peoples spare rooms or tiny industrial units. The article had 5 boards taken from cad to printed boards made, in less than a week, and was very good quality.

Food for though also is still potentially licecencing or selling the rights, there are a few places who sell xbox mods and stuff still, theyd potentially be interested.

Quick money and no bother afterwards.

Its people like you who keep this scene alive afterall, There should be some kind of OG Xbox scene Kinghthood for you IMO.

I agree with the sentiments being expressed here.  I've already done an HDMI install using Kevtriss' HDMINES and UltraHDMI (internal HDMI for the NES and N64)  Neither of those were a simple job and both came with the understanding that DIY was not for first timers and was intended for experienced installers only. I don't believe that either offered any customer support beyond an online tutorial and a good installation video.

If you don't want to put up with order fulfillment you could work with https://www.game-tech.us/ like Kevtriss does.  They open up preorders every so often and when they get enough they order a large batch of units from China.  I had to wait 6 months to get my UltraHDMI, installed it myself and couldn't be happier with the process because it makes available obscure tech that's a must have for retro enthusiasts like me.

N64 Freak we're practically begging you to release an install kit! I'd pay $100+ for a quality internal DIY solution!

Any update on this topic?

@N64 freak This install and the PCB itself looks so clean, its‘s gorgeous!!! Do you have any kind of documentation or schematics for this? Unfortunately I‘m not good enough with SMD soldering, but it would be so great to put together a batch order in China or anywhere else.

On reddit some people do the same for UltraHdMI.

any thoughts on this?

I second the poor commercial electronics soldering, seems like every time I open up equipment I find myself re-flowing everything. Of course the RoCH compliant solder does not help. I bought several rolls of the good solder just before they stopped selling it years ago. I just don't let my kids lick the circuit boards any more lol! I have been working on electronics since the VCR was the new thing out. Got into the Xbox as soon as we realized what we had in our hands, never moved onto other systems. I did install a 1Ghz into an Xbox years ago, or I should say that I bought the re-ball stencil kit and had my local shop do it, Rework stations were so0 expensive then. But every XBE had to be separately patched, it was a pain. I sold the board and moved onto the 128mb RAM upgrades. Successfully RAMMED 100's of boxes over the years. Used to eBay them, but I no longer sell anything. Kept 8 Xboxes that I will complete and keep as my collection.

I have one of N64 Freak's 1Ghz 128mb motherboards and this guy does GREAT work. !!
