KaosEngineer
No one's taken the time to figure out exactly what is breaking on the DVD that prevents them from reading game discs. There are so many possibilities. Dirty laser lens. And, many say that the laser must have died. However, I don't think they've tested it to know 100% certain that that is the problem. Beyond those items, internal cable connections may have corroded over time and need to be cleaned and reseated. Electrolytic capacitors on the controller board have gone bad thus preventing the electroncs from functioning properly. The list of possible problems goes on and on... The one nice thing about the original Xbox's DVD drive is it is not console locked with a key like the DVD drive in the Xbox 360. Therefore, you can easily swap in a DVD drive from a different original Xbox to see if it works.

You could try cleaning the laser pickup lens with a cotton bud(Qtip) and Isopropyl . Cheers SS Dave Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing. KaosEngineer
I'd read a post where someone with a PAL Xbox had changed it to NTSC mode and their Xbox's DVD drive was not reading discs. After they changed the console back to PAL mode, the DVD drive started to read discs again without a problem.
