Hello, I'm Modding Again

Hey everyone, just recently got back into console modding after not touching a console in 10 years. Back then I primarily messed with 360's for my friends and anyone willing to pay me. Now I am more interested in building for myself to have "The Ultimate System". Excited about learning how the scene has developed over the years and finding this community. I assume like most here, I am a gamer. I can't seem to stop playing EverQuest 2 (13 years) and I play various shooters and single player "play through" games.

In time I am sure I will have loads of questions and will look for feedback on ideas. Thus far I have 3 OG Xboxs and have TSOP'd one of them but havent really done much else.

Glad to be here. Happy Modding!

nice LED mods man. i always wanted to be a part of everquest, but at the time was just too busy and theres no way im starting now.... lol. the xbox is alot of fun. even if you dont play the games. a ton of resources out there, alot of it is dated and fragmented. but sites like these are finding ways to string it back together.

Thanks, LEDs are cheap figured id give it a shot.

Yeah EQ takes alot, I don't even want to see my characters online time because its probably close to 2 years.

Nice. That's a Hitachi DVD drive in the third pic. Those are uncommon.

For sure, TSOP flash all of your Xboxes though. Or chip them, if they're a 1.6. Make sure you also remove the clock capacitor from all of your 1.0-1.5 Xboxes, because they'll die if you don't.

I didn't realize that. I just grabbed it from another system as the Thompson that was in it was being problematic.

I have already realized the flashed bios importance, I started with just a softmod and dealing with locking/unlocking of the drive was annoying let alone worrying about issues if the drive failed. I have not done the clock cap yet because I think i want to replace it rather than remove, I just haven't researched enough to be sure.

No need at all to replace it. But whether you replace it or not, still remove the current one ASAP. The longer you wait, the more likely it is to cause serious damage and there's a strong chance it's already leaking.

i didnt realize those drives were uncommon either. i have one in a V1.0 that had a "refurbished" sticker and an X2 chip in it. nicest unit ive acquired. best dvd drive of the lot of the ones i own.

The Hitachi drives can only be found in the final 1.6b revision (and not all  1.6b units have one), so they aren't that common, since they were only being made at the end of the Xbox's manufacturing run.

Your 1.0 definitely had its drive swapped if it came with a Hitachi.

I'll get on that then. I just figured possibly replace because things like letting the clock be wrong bugs me way more than it should and it wont have a permanent plugged in home for some time (in small apartment looking for a house). It hasn't leaked yet as far as I can tell. I made sure it turned on then immediately ripped it open and checked all the caps for leaks/bulges/pops/smell. It's a 1.4 and seemed hardly ever used. I got it from an estate sale so I'm assuming it was at some grandparents for when the grand kids were there. Even had a copy of Mercenaries in it.

xbmc leverages the internet for time (you have to tell it to tho). its common to see XBMC as dashboard. its been my peace of mind when my mind is disturbed by the details.... who wouldnt want accurate time. you are justified in your thinking. i'd rather have no clock than the wrong clock.

I was not aware XBMC can take care of the clock, this interests me. However due to it not having a permanent spot its not always plugged into my network. I have been thinking about a wireless solution but have not looked hard enough to find one I like.

It was a long time ago that I played this game (when I was around 7) so sorry if I can't recall the details or much of the information I'm about to give. Basically there's this 3rd person shooter for the OG Xbox that is very similar to Conker: live and reloaded or Fur Fighters but it's a bit more brighter and colorful. The characters were chibi-like and the gameplay was a team deathmatch and you could play in various maps; the couple I can remember were in a bathroom and the players were very small, another one was in like a circus but for this one I'm not very sure.  Thanks for helping and I'm looking forward to the responses.

Hi all, I joined because I have a 1.0 build I did back in the day (2004), obviously things have changed a lot since then.  I have the solderless xecutor 2.3b lite where you screw it onto the board headers and everything still works great.  I did remove my clock cap before it could wreck anything.  I've upgraded my fan to a noctua. I do have the later heat sinks in hand, but I will probably defer installation until I do a full recap and my HDMI mod from MakeMHZ.  I have a 200 GB ide drive in there now, running avalaunch dashboard.  I do like that dashboard but I'm guessing that is very out of date.  I've done a few updates here and there, and I added some better emulators but I'm still mostly running the same old stuff I did back then.  After adding xb partitioner 1.3 and starting it up to see what it looks like, I found that I need to upgrade my bios to allow me to go with the 2 TB drive I bought and the venerable StarTech SATA adapter I have.  I'm downloading TruHeXen 2020 right now from archive so maybe that will have a new bios that will let me use the 2TB.  The last time I set one of these up might have been around 2007 with an evox disc I probably got off usenet back then.  I still have that disc but I'm sure it isn't going to get me where I want to be with regard to upgrading to a 2TB drive.
Anyway, I will be searching the forums before simply asking someone to tell me things that have been answered tons of times.  Just thought I would introduce myself.
      Thanks!

Hey everyone, I'm having a problem with an original xbox that will turn on, with a solid green light for a second, then turn itself off.  Then back on with an orange blinking light, then turn itself off and on again until finally staying on with a blinking orange light with it's fan running what I think is full power (haven't confirmed this).  I can open the disc tray when in this state, but I can't power the xbox off unless I unplug the power from the back.
I opened up the xbox.  I believe it's a v1.2 motherboard. It was in pretty good condition I thought considering the original owner said it sat in a closet for the past decade or so.  This xbox was not modded.
I read that an orange blinking light could mean the xbox was overheating, which would explain the high fan speed.  So I removed the old thermal paste, and added new thermal paste, put it back together, plugged it in, and the same issue is happening.  I have tried a brand new A/V cable and power cord that I bought on amazon and that didn't seem to make a difference.
Does anyone know what an orange blinking light and this sequence of powering on and off mean? I can't find good documentation on it anywhere.  I'm also looking to try anything else at this point if you have any recommendations.
Here is a link to a video of the symptoms described above and some pictures of the montherboard.  Thanks for any help in advance!
