So I ordered a couple of generic 500gb HDD’s on Amazon for 2 Xbox’s both are v1.6 and mod chipped, they just happened to all be WD green.

Wrote a 500gb hdd image to both drives as I have done with many in the past, new ide cable and adapter etc but non of the WD green drives will boot??

Is there an issue with these drives and OG Xbox’s?

The Green drives are ok to use if you disable the green feature by running a PC program called "wdidle3" as this will then make it a WD blue drive.

Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.

Of my 3 consoles, I have a 3TB WD Green 3.5", 2TB WD Blue 3.5", and a 2TB WD Blue 2.5". All 3 have the Xbox Origins image from Arcade Punks on them and none have ever given me any issue. The 3TB WD Green drive was also a recycle from an old PC I was retiring, so was at least 3 years old when I repurposed it for the Xbox. All 3 are using the  typically recommended Startech IDE-SATA and whatever 80 conductor 24"  IDE cable was available on Amazon at the time. To add another detail, the WD Green console also has the IDE cable reversed (blue plug in HDD instead of motherboard) with no problem.

Many thanks to Dave for pointing out this tool. Here is a download link to the tool. Took me a while to find it.

Had no idea this was a thing. I guess the feature was disabled on my 3TB drive. Thanks for the info!

The best way to use the WDIDLE3 Tool is to download the Ultimatebootdisk. Its free boot disk https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ . Boot it from a PC and access the Utility from within the boot disk. Super easy lots of tutorials on youtube regarding this and takes only less than 20 seconds to disable Head parking feature on the green drives.

Thanks again Dave for pointing this out.
