Is there a way I can test an iso before burning it in order to narrow down the problem. many thanks in advance. Id be glad to donate to the site for any advice

Save your dvd drive and ftp it to your hdd using qwix. What is your system setup?

I havent softmodded the Xbox yet, I suppose thats the thing to do

Do the softmod, backup the eeprom info to a pc, install a larger hdd and load games to it. You could use backup disks but eventually your dvd drive will die and getting spares is getting hard.

That is probably the only reason why your burned original Xbox game ISOs, specifically XISOs, are not booting on your Xbox.

The Xbox must be modded (soft, TSOP or chip) first - it won't launch any discs other than MS official Xbox game discs until it is.
