Is There a Way To Calibration the Dvd Drive?

Yes, you can adjust the pot resistor by the laser, the only problem is it will shorten the life of the laser even quicker. What brand do you have?
If you search dvd pot tweak and your dvd brand on YouTube it will show you what to do.

Any adjustment you make to the DVD laser is just a short term fix and in some cases you will make it worse

is it possible to swap just the lazer diode out with one from another DVD player or PC drive? (lazer component, not the whole head assembly)

As long as they both have the same part number even then some laser assemblies have the same part number but have different connectors

I may as well tag a Q on the end here 😛

i have aquired another broken xbox FOC (They breed so fast! I have gone from 0 to 4 in 2 months!)

it was a easy fix to get it running again but it has a non functional Thomson DVD drive in it.

I might try the pot adjustment just to try and get a little life in it to read a mod disc but if not I was wondering does anyone know somewhere in the UK I could buy a laser assembly or 2?

Finding a replacement laser for a thomson is a bit like finding rocking horse shit. I have seen a few but they cost more than a Xbox.

The lasers by now, especially Thompsons are getting old and dead. A POT tweak might get a little more life out of it, but from my view, it should be done with the intent to softmod, as then you can load from the HDD and no longer have to deal with the dying laser. I've had my share of woes with a dying Thompson.

Unless someone corrects me, if you search for "TOP-60 Optical Laser Lens Replacement" a few options will pop up on ebay and even Alliexpress. Those should fit and replace the Thomson TGM600 laser lens assembly and those are not badly priced. Around $15 dollars US. I bought one to try as my Thomson's laser is on its last leg. Haven't installed it yet.

If one was looking to adjust the pot anyway, here is one helpful guide. Link I had a guide forever and day ago that went into detail about readings you should be getting for the Philips and Samsung drives which was a wayyyy lower number compared to the Thomsons, but that information is out there. If I find it, I'll post it here as well.

I bought a replacement from eBay, it stated it was new, it wasn’t and it didn’t work, luckily I got my money back.

It may be new but has been sitting for over a decade in a poor storage environment that caused damage to the pickup assembly.

Well I went down a slightly different path in the end.

You may recall I have another xbox with a knackered laser which is a philips drive.

Anyway when I was looking for thompson lasers I stumbled across a brand new laser for the philips.

its from a company called zedlabs which I have brought loads of stuff from in the past so I ordered one.

Its not arrived yet but I will update if I get it going.

Zedlabs do a pretty reasonable 3rd party controller for the xbox to if anyone needs some, They also do drive belts etc.

Zedlabz or Zedlabs?  I don't find the Philips laser on the first's web site.

Edit: I see. They don't have all the items available on the US site that are listed on the UK site.

here's a fyi about the replacement lasers. i have tried both phillips models from zedlabs and neither worked. they did appear to be new(yes, i removed the ground solder points). there is a guy that sells replacement thompson laser deck assembley on ebay. i have bought several of these and found them to be very hit and miss. i'd say about 70% work. if u get a replacement and it does not work, don't give that ebay seller a chance to make it right, just go ahead and get a refund and order another one or u may go past the time u have for returns and that seller will never get back to u. https://www.ebay.com/itm/XBox-1st-Gen-Repair-Laser-Deck-Assembly-Motors-Rails-Thomson-TGM600-DVD-Drive/322000065968?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 i have not found good replacement for samsung or hitachi drives.

Well the laser arrived yesterday, It is indeed brand new.

No idea if it will work but I will attempt a repair this weekend.

the Laser replacement itself is a easy task for me, Soldering the 2 shorting blobs off is more of a challenge so that is where I will need the most luck!

My soldering skills are poor to say the least....

it's best to take a really hot iron and rake it across those solder points a few times to remove them. let me know hot it works out. which model and brand did u get?

Last year I put together my personally ideal XBox.
Decent AV cables, hard-mod, big HDD, quiet fans... all the fun stuff that increased the consoles capabilities and improves the experience.
And until last week that XBox was running perfectly fine.
However, the console is now completely dead.
The PSU is fine, and I tried changing several of the capacitors on the motherboard, but there is simply no life at all.
The console just doesn't react at all when the power button (or eject) is pressed.
There's not even a 'blink-and-you'll-miss-it' kind of signal that the console is even receiving power.
But, like I said the PSU is fine, that was the first thing I tried.
And after several hours of replacing capacitors, trying to find the one that may be stopping the power from reaching the console... I gave up and held a respectful funeral for my short-lived friend.
      Close friends and family attended.
Clearly I'm just trying to add some humour there.
But when I did finally run out of components to replace I procured a replacement console to start the project again.
That console came, and works fine.
However, I cannot use the 2TB HDD I had installed in the previous console.
I can't remember when or exactly why I did... but I locked the HDD to the, now dead, console.
As such no matter what I connect the HDD to, because of the 'lock' the XBox imposed on the drive; I can't do anything with it.
The replacement console can't unlock it, or format it.
My PC sees the drive and it's capacity, but is unable to do anything with it. I've tried Windows and Linux, as I though the 'brutish' nature of the latter's terminal commands could break the 'locked' state.
      But, even Linux doesn't work.
Replacing the drive isn't all that much, money-wise. However, it would be a shame if this perfectly functional HDD is now reduced to nothing more than an overengineered door-stop.
Although not a massive capacity by modern standards; 2TB could still be useful for many things, if there is some way I can 'unlock' it.
As I mentioned above the console it was 'locked' with is completely dead.
I cannot find any reason why, but there isn't even the slightest of a glimmer of life at all.
I don't know what could cause such a state, and it's confusing that it was working fine a few days before.
And just for those who go straight for this suggestion...
I already took out the clock capacitor.
I've done that on every XBox I've ever had in my possession.
It's usually the first thing I do upon opening them up.
And just to be clear; I am careful when removing them. I don't force them; I do use a soldering iron and take them out with a delicate touch.
      Anyway...
I have just ordered a replacement 2TB HDD.
But, if there's a secret way of reenabling the use of the one I have now; I'm sure I could find a productive use for it.
However, after trying a few 'suggestions' already; I am not going to hold my breath.
That said; I am open to suggestions.
I also want to clarify that the PC motherboards I have are unsuitable for running XboxHDM.
The only PC motherboard I have with IDE can't boot from USB, and I don't have an IDE optical drive.
And the other (which can boot from USB) doesn't have any IDE connections at all.
If memory serves me; XboxHDM need to access the HDD via IDE, even when connecting a SATA HDD (via an IDE-to-SATA adapter).
So, unless XboxHDM has changed since I last tried to run it; that particular software won't function properly on the hardware I currently have.
Also, because the cost of replacing the HDD is so low, I'm hoping to avoid spending too much, if any money on rescuing this 'locked' HDD.
I am just traying to be a little eco-friendly in repurposing it if possible.

Thank you in advance for any and all help provided,
So I installed a X3 chip along with the LCD face plate that has USB on my v1.0 Xbox (not windbond/Sharp). I managed to flash bios to the chip but I am unsure of how to understand the bank switches. Bios checker always show unknown bios.
I get Evox Bios to load when all 4 switches lights are on.
I get X3 Bios to load when switch # 2 lights is on.
Every other switch combination my Xbox just powers cycles on/off 3 times with power button flashing before it shuts down. I can't even get to the flash Bios menu anymore. So my questions are....
Question 1: On the face plate are my switches are ON if they light up or are they OFF if no light is on! Is this correct? I don't see the on/off wording on it.
Question 2: How do I determine where to flash a Bios? 256k/512k/1MB/2MB?
Question 3: The graph description below shows what bank you are on depending on the switch combination, yes?

       256k Bank
Bank 1: on on on on
Bank 2: off on on on
Bank 3: on off on on
Bank 4: off off on on
Bank 5: on on off on
Bank 6: off on off on
Bank 7: on off off on
Bank 8: off off off on
      512k Bank
Bank 12: on on on off
Bank 34: off on on off
Bank 56: on off on off
Bank 78: off off on off
      1MB Bank
Bank 1234: on on off off
Bank 5678: off on off off
      2MB Bank
Bank 12345678: off off off off

Hi! I just got an 1.6 xbox with unleash x and the game installed on the hdd but when I launch the game there's no text on the menus and no dialogue, the characters just stay still until skip the cutscene then the game works fine. I've tried downloading a raw iso redump and convert it to xiso and extract the files to the hdd but I get the same issues. does anybody else has this problem?
