It is something you get better at with practice

My 1st ever welds (stick welder) looked like pigeon droppings

i tried that. thats how i did all the others. The hole wasnt big enough to fit a staple threw let alone the gray wire. Im not saying it cant happen im just sayin i struggled with it

What he is saying is you add fresh solder to the pad and fresh solder on the wire then lay the wire on the pad and apply heat from the iron and the wire will sink to the solder on the pad.

Using leaded solder and flux paste helps as well.
