HDShadow
What HDD - IDE or SATA? If SATA are you using an 80 wire IDE cable? SATA adapter?

The original Xbox dvd drives are 100% NOT LOCKED to the motherboard. They didn't start doing that with dvd drives until xbox 360. Most of us here have swapped every different type of dvd drive into every different xbox. We know that isn't what is going on. Wipe that from your mind and start looking for other variables.
