Disk Tray Is Being Blocked?

I have a vanilla Xbox (never modded or anything) that was working completely fine earlier today, but suddenly developed an issue where the disc tray won't come out.

We had no idea what caused this, and trying the easy fix that seems to be common online of cleaning the little rubber-band belt did not solve it.

So we opened up the Xbox and found that when the metal casing is removed from the top half of the CD drive, the tray opens up just fine. The same goes if we put metal top to the drive on, but don't push it down snuggly or screw it on: the drive will open fine. But when the top of the drive's metal casing is pushed all the way into place, the tray gets stuck again.

Here's a video of the tray working fine without the metal top:

And here's a video with the metal top on, where the tray doesn't open:

We were trying to figure out exactly what the tray was catching on when it's coming out, and after a lot of investigating it seems like it is catching on the circular white piece in the center of the metal plate? I think it's a bump there to help keep the discs in place?

We tried putting it back together while leaving the screws out of the disc drive so that the metal plate only covers the drive loosely, but that did not work because the Xbox started not reading the discs correctly and they would spin loudly in the machine and sound like something was wrong. So it seems like we need to put everything back together tightly for it to work, but then the disc tray won't come out.

Has anyone else had this problem? Even if you have not, what would you suggest to fix it? We're kind of stuck right now as we don't even know exactly why this white bump is now blocking the disc tray since it didn't before. Any help or thoughts at all are appreciated, thanks so much.

Additional Notes

  • It is not an issue of lubrication or cleaning the rails for the CD drive. We thoroughly cleaned those tracks and sprayed some lubricant in them and it didn't make a difference.
  • Here is a picture of the disc drive with the metal top fully clasped in place:

If cleaning the belt did not work, replace it.

The magnet on the spindle is too strong.  Once stretched, the belt/pulley mechanism used to eject the tray cannot provide enough force to pull them apart.  Leave a disc in the tray and it may open.  Or, try what @jhark mentions, place a round paper sticker on the disc clamper in the top of the DVD drive casing.
