My first experience with the original Xbox was at my friend's place shortly after he moved into his first apartment.  It was a rundown hole in the wall, like $300 a month in a bad part of the bad part of town.

But he was so excited - his was predominately a SEGA family, and they'd had the Saturn and the Dreamcast, and he swore up and down that the "Xbox was like the Dreamcast only better", and so my older brother and I went over to hang out.  I know he had Halo, because I played it with him quite often, but I think the first game I saw on it was Morrowind.

I hated it so much!  An odd statement from me in retrospect, because I rediscovered the game on PC a few years later and fell in love with it and the rest of The Elder Scrolls stuff, but those damn bug things in the swamp kept killing me, and I utterly hated the giant controller.  The game that really changed things for me was when he brought the Xbox over along with Steel Batallion, a game that still blows me away to this day (and which I am very grateful to have purchased, sold, and then repurchased recently after almost a decade of not having it).  I've always liked Mech games (*cough* Mechwarrior *cough*), and the sheer granularity of SB is...unbelievable.  It was the first game that really made me look at the console as something other than a big ugly black brick that was stupid enough to stick a big-ass hard drive in it.  Like anyone would ever need 10GB of storage, right?

Whoo, hindsight is kind of humiliating.

But I was a Nintendo kid - raised in the 80s on the NES, falling in love with the SNES (to this day, still my favorite console), and then having the misfortune to love the awfulness of the Virtual Boy and escaping childhood trauma through the N64.  I wouldn't say that the Xbox was a wakeup call, because I only came to appreciate it recently, but it has definitely had a presence in my life for a long time.

I only really started getting into the Xbox because my best friend (different best friend - old one got involved with my older sister and ruined everything) loves modded consoles but can't do any of the technical stuff, whereas I've invested a lot of time and money in tools and knowledge to become a fairly skilled at soldering. I'd much rather practice on my own console instead of his, so I pulled my Xbox out of storage where it had sat, unused, for at least 5 years, and started pulling it apart and figuring out how everything behaved - I started with a recap job of the 1.4 board that turned out to be inside, played around with a couple of different mod chips and video upgrades, and finally purchased a handful of consoles in non-working condition (or in need of serious TLC) in order to get my hands dirty.

And here we are - my number one board is out for the one service I can't perform yet (1.4GHz upgrade), I have my buddy's Xbox in process for serious modding, and I'm excited to see what others have come up with while I've been stuck in my own little corner of the internet.  I've pretty much mastered the various mods for most of the common and uncommon consoles, and several for the rarer fellows - the Xbox is my new frontier, and I'm looking to explore as much of it as I possibly can.

My original tinkering came into effect when my friend jumped on his original NES because he was pissed off at a game so that got repaired then I started on the original PS1 by installing mod chips did that for a couple years then I just kind of got out of the hobby all together so I'm pretty much reintroducing myself to it my OG consoles were the intellivision vectrex Atari and pong so here I am I'm interested in these things again because of my two sons they like the older consoles and they have a few original Xboxes and different states of failure and I'd like to try to repair them
